Throughout the VA/DC high school season, our staff travels far and wide to identify the best players in the Commonwealth. In additon to that, our staff delivers evaluations and video to assist players in their recruiting process. Every week our staff members provide notes and video in an assortment of scout blogs. Jordan Jones, the Virginia/DC Assistant Scouting Director, will be delivering his weekly scout blog on some of the players he saw during his travels.

Jordan's Scout Blog

Bassett

David Cook RHP / 1B / Bassett High, VA / 2027

It was a strong outing as Cook threw a complete game, picking up thirteen strikeouts in the outing. He is a pure athlete at 6-foot-3, 210-pounds that still has some room to add some bulk to the athletic frame. The fastball was up to 92 early in the game and settled in at 88-91. He held velocity well deep into the outing, still touching 90 in the seventh inning. He showed feel for the slider early in counts to get ahead as well as using it as a finisher with two strikes. It is fairly easy intent with a quick arm. There is still some polishing to do, but that creates some real intrigue about what can be down the road for Cook.

Clover Hill

Eli Turek OF / RHP / Clover Hill High, VA / 2029

Turek caught my eye and impressed me in some big situations for a freshman. He had a big hit early in the game with some runners on to get a run in. It is a good frame at 6-foot-2, 180-pounds that could hold some bulk as he matures. He showed confidence in the box and made good swing decisions. It was a good first look against a quality opponent.

Glen Allen

Daniel Nienaber RHP / 1B / Glen Allen High, VA / 2026

It was a strong outing for Nienaber, where he dominated the opposing lineup. He had to work around some traffic in the third, where he gave up two runs from a hit by pitch and walk. Outside of that inning he cruised. He had twelve strikeouts on the night. He dominated the zone with the fastball, getting plenty of swings and misses. The fastball was 92-94 early in the game, then settled at 89-91. He showed feel for two different breaking balls on the night and used them effectively. The curveball was used early in counts at 74-75, and the slider was used as a finisher at times at 76-79. He has some of the best stuff and some of the best pitch ability in the state, and that was on full display on Monday night.

Caleb Whitehead 1B / OF / Glen Allen High, VA / 2026

Whitehead delivered the dagger for Glen Allen with a three-run homerun late in the game that broke the game open. He recognized a breaking ball early in the count and sent it out of deep left. It is a physical frame that has continued to show the ability to impact the baseball.

Lord Botetourt

Jairdan Pennix SS / RHP / Lord Botetourt High, VA / 2027

His flash and presence can catch your eye when you see him on the field, and his play matches that as well. The offensive profile is what stands out, and that makes him impactful at the top of the order. He shows discipline at the plate, attacking pitches in the strike zone. He drew a couple walks and had a loud single in the later part of the game. It is lean strength that flashes impact to the pull side at times. There is position versatility with being able to play in the infield as well as being athletic and running baseballs down in the outfield.

Swisher Cook OF / LHP / Lord Botetourt High, VA / 2029

A first in person look at Cook, and there were some intriguing intangibles for the future. It is a strong, well put together frame at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds. He showed a patient approach that worked deep into counts. He took some healthy hacks at pitches on the inner half, just missing them by fouling them off straight back. There is some bat speed that gives some impact potential to the pull side. Defensively it is a corner outfield/first base profile with future power intrigue to go with that profile. He got the start on the mound and had to work through traffic in three innings, but he managed to only give up one run. It was a heavy fastball usage that he had to work his way through deep counts. The feel for the secondary was up and down, but the curveball flashed as the best secondary pitch that got some chases out of the zone. There is a lot to like for the future on both sides, and if the consistency can get better, then the upside is real.

Manchester

Asher Blalock SS / 2B / Manchester High, VA / 2026

Blalock brings a bouncy energy to the game that is fun to watch. He is an athletic defender that has smooth, crisp actions at shortstop. He had bat-to-ball skills and the whole field with line drive tendencies. He had a single and was on barrel a couple times throughout the day. He is productive and makes an impact on both sides.

Matoaca

Stephen Ankiel RHP / 1B / Matoaca High, VA / 2027

There was traffic on the basepaths throughout the outing but showed some intrigue. The fastball was up to 89 early, settling in at 85-88. When the fastball was in the zone, he had some success getting outs and some swings and misses. The feel for the secondary was up and down, but he did flash a firm slider at 79-81. It has been a significant velocity jump since the fall, and it can help his arsenal tremendously, especially when being in the strike zone.

Patriot

Connor Doxey C / Patriot High, VA / 2027

Doxey put together some quality at-bats and provided a spark for the Patriots. He had a ground-rule double on the day to bring in a run. He took aggressive swings at pitches in the zone as well as having some aggressive takes. It is an aggressive mentality that is ready to hit when he steps into the box. He brings versatility defensively, being able to play different positions on the field.

St. Christopher's

Avery Peay RHP / 3B / St. Christopher's School, VA / 2029

The freshman got the start against a veteran lineup and showed some promise for the future. It is a long-levered frame at 6-foot-4, 175-pound frame. He used the fastball frequently, which was 81-84, touching 85. The feel for the breaking ball got better later in the outing, but he had the most success with the fastball. He had to work around some walks that led to a few runs, but he managed to limit damage at times. As he continues to add strength to the frame, he could make a significant jump.

Thomas Dale

jordan brown C / 3B / TDHS, VA / 2027

It was a multi-hit day for Brown as he was a producer in the leadoff spot. He showed the ability to hit in different counts and be able to use the back side of the field. There is a patient approach and feel for the strike zone. There are bat-to-ball skills with some strength present in the frame. It is average arm strength behind the plate and average hands, but the offensive profile carries the skill set.
