This is our second update to the 2026 VA/DC Power 25. The biggest takeaway is that there is a lot of parity in the 2026 season. Ranked teams beating ranked teams, unranked teams with quality wins, and plenty of early season head scratching is the story of 2026 thus far. Without further ado, we are going to highlight a few teams that have seen some movement in the Power 25.

VA/DC Power 25 Update Notes

+ The revolving door of #1 ranked teams continues this week, with the Atlee Raiders moving into the top spot. The Raiders are 3-1 on the season with a convincing win over #14 Miller School on 3/28 and a 1-0 win over #20 Glen Allen on 3/19. The Raiders pride themselves on applying pressure on teams with their offensive style and playing sound defense behind one of the better staff's in the state, led by Chase Blumberg (VMI). They have two quality opponents this week, with an up and down Benedictine team and a ranked Liberty Christian team.

+ The Cox Falcons move up one spot after a dominant win over then #8 Ocean Lakes. The Falcons have given up four total runs in five games, while also scoring 53 runs. They have absolutely ran through Beach District opponents early on, run ruling their last four games, including the most recent one being 15-1 over the Dolphins. Hank Brown (VCU) and MJ Lemke (Richmond) have both answered the bell on the mound so far this year. Brown has given up one earned up in 13 innings, while also striking out 26 hitters and carrying nearly a 9:1 K/BB ratio. Lemke has thrown 11 innings, has not given up and earned run, walked only one, and has punched 15 hitters. Those are staggering numbers for their 1-2 punch.

+ Another 757 team moving up in the ranks is Western Branch. Coach Wright's Bruins team is hitting .367 as a team, has scored 85 runs, has walked more times than they have struck out, have double the hits to strikeouts, and the pitching staff has a 2:1 K/BB ratio. Ian Taylor is leading the way on the mound, having allowed four earned runs in 20 innings of work. While Ryan Waddell has been really strong on the mound, the talented sophomore is also leading the team in batting average (.481), Runs Scored (12), and is second on the team in OBP (.588).

+ Two new faces move into the rankings this week, Gonzaga College HS and Woodgrove HS.

  • While Gonzaga does have three losses on the season, all have been to quality teams and they were extremely competitive in those games. Also, all three of those losses have come to ranked teams in their respective state (2 VA - 1 MD). The Eagles have two big games this week, and winning out this week could cement their place in the Power 25 for the foreseeable future.
  • Woodgrove started the year at the #20 spot, but dropped out after a 1-2 start. The Wolverines righted the ship, winning their last four, including wins over West Potomac and McLean last week. Both the offense and pitching have a serious youth movement happening, with the pitching staff needing the most time to get their legs under them. As that staff matures, they should continue their ascent. Like Gonzaga, their next three games will be big determining factors as to where this team actually stands as we approach the midway point of the season.
