2026 Spring Team Preview: Southington (CT)

SOUTHINGTON, Ct. - While the future appears bright at Southington, head coach Stan Switala is not about to overlook the present as he heads into his fifth year in charge of the program.

“Our goal at the end of the day is to win a league championship and we want to win a state championship, something we have not won since 1999,” explained Switala, who is 80-20 at the school, with two state runner-up squads. “We have gotten close. We’re hoping this year or the following year we can do it.”

Senior Rocco Davino is expected to be the pitching anchor on a roster loaded with underclassmen. The Southern Connecticut commit was 2-2 with a 2.20 ERA last season, posting a 38-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 41 innings on the mound.

Luke Prozzo, the 84th-rated junior in New England who is receiving Division I interest, brings a left-handed arm to the rotation featuring a fastball that has hit 88, with Dom Zigmont, a junior right-hander throwing in the low-90s, expected to be in a closer role.

Tyler Guerrette, the second-rated junior catcher in Connecticut, will also pitch with a pair of freshmen showing enormous potential, right-hander SJ Switala, the head coach’s son, and southpaw Bryce Zielinski. Both ninth graders are also in the conversation to play first base.

Tyler Tortora, the sixth-ranked sophomore left-handed pitcher in New England, Sawyer Trudeau, the eighth-rated 10th-grade RHP in Connecticut, and junior righty Cole Kosco are additional underclassmen with promise on the mound.

Mitch Zielinski, the 40th-rated senior shortstop in New England and the older brother of Bryce, will be at second with Mason Lefort, the 13th-ranked junior third baseman in New England, moving from third last season to short this year.

Guerrette, Zigmont and sophomore Tyler Poutoves are in the mix to play third base with Connor Lentini, the 14th-rated senior outfielder in Connecticut, the likely center fielder. Left-handed hitting sophomore Ethan Herens and Drew Kelly, the 45th-ranked junior outfielder in New England, will also be in the outfield with junior Jack Denorfia providing depth in the infield and outfield.

“We definitely have a lot of players with very good metrics,” pointed out Switala, whose Blue Knights won a second straight CCC league championship during a 19-7 season a year ago that ended in a state quarterfinal loss to Glastonbury. “We will see if they can play together and figure it out in high school.

“We have enough pitchers with 10 to 12 on varsity, so I think pitching will be a strong point,” Switala concluded. “The biggest thing for us is, are we going to put up runs. Pitching will keep us in games, we just need to put the ball in play and if we do that we can make a run like we usually do.”
