2026 High School Team Preview: Divine Child Falcons
DEARBORN - Six solid returning players bring plenty of optimism to Divine Child, a five-time state champion with hopes of making it six this coming season.
“I like that this team is hungry to win and be the best that they can be each and every day,” explained head coach Jeremy Shay, who enters his fourth year as head coach with a 62-43 overall record. “They have been playing baseball for a long time together now and all want the same thing at the end of the season. The leadership that we have on this team will be a big part of our success this season. We will go as far as they want to go.”
Last year the Falcons finished 23-9, losing to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in the regional semifinals.
“Our program is known for toughness, accountability and doing things the right way,” Shay said. “We care about developing young men just as much as developing baseball players. We want to set our players up for success in the future.”
The immediate future definitely looks bright for Divine Child with four college commits back to lead the way, Andrew Ryan and Dallas Terski are key returning hitters for the Falcons with Ian Hall and Liam Gibbons back on the mound ready to shut down opponents.
Ryan, who hit .364 with 28 RBIs, 38 runs, 26 walks and 14 stolen bases a year ago, returns at shortstop. The Kalamazoo College commit is joined on the infield by Terski, the 23rd-rated 2026 in the state who is headed to play at Western Michigan. Terski was the top hitter on the Falcons a year ago at .432 with 43 RBIs, 26 runs and a dozen stolen bases.
Hall was 6-1 with a 2.54 ERA, striking out 50 in 41 innings, while Gibbons finished 6-0 with a 1.54 ERA, fanning 42 in 36.1 frames. Hall is an Ashland signee while Gibbons is a Macomb Community College commit.
Two other players are back bringing more experience to the Falcons. Senior right-hander Mason Cubr, a 6-4 180-pounder, pitched 22 innings with 25 Ks, four saves and a 3.81 ERA. Kole Boike, a left-handed hitter, batted .366 as a freshman with 38 runs scored, 15 steals and 14 RBIs.
“Pitching and defense are the strengths,” Shay said in assessing this year’s team, which must replace graduates Cameron Niehaus (5-2, 2.71 ERA, 79 Ks, 46.1 innings, playing at Central Michigan), Ethan Davis (.318, 22 RBIs) and Matthew Esparza (.357, 25 RBIs).
Adam Garcia and Andre Davis are promising newcomers according to Shay, who believes the team weakness this season is hitting.
“The keys to success for this season will be if we’re able to play our game and not worry about who we’re playing,” Shay explained. “We need to be able to play our game each and every game.
“Our league will be and always is a tough one, with Jackson Lumen Christi, Cardinal Mooney, Liggett, Lutheran North, Father Gabrial Richard and Riverview Gabriel Richard always having well-coached teams able to beat anyone on a given day,” Shay continued. “Our non-conference schedule will also be one that will challenge us throughout the season. We want to be playing our best baseball at the end of the season when the state tournament starts. We always try to put together a tough schedule to get us prepared for a postseason run in the tournament.”
