Key moments: Dunwoody took advantage of a couple of errors and walks in the 2nd inning as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind an Alec Koehly 2-RBI knock. Lakeside cut the deficit in half as they cut the lead to 4-2 after a Grant Jackson RBI base hit in the 3rd. Things were quiet from there until the 7th where Spencer Leftoff extended the Dunwoody lead to 5-2 with a sacrifice fly. Lakeside had 8-9-1 due up in the bottom of the 7th. Dunwoody retired the first two batters to open the bottom half of the 7th. Micah Von stepped up to the plate hoping to start a rally with 2-outs and he did just that. Von would end up working a walk to reach, Rory Lichtman followed suit and ripped a single into RF. Grant Jackson stayed hot and poked one down the RF line for a 2 RBI base-hit to make it 5-4. Parker Burst battled and ended up shooting one through the left side to make it runners at 1st and 3rd. Jorge Montano, batting in the 5-spot, jumped on the first pitch he saw and scorched one into RCF for the 2 RBI extra-base hit and the walk-off winner.
Avery’s Takeaway: This in-region rivalry series opened with Lakeside making a comeback in the 7th as they took the region opener on a high note. Noah Hathaway battled across 6.0 innings-pitched and if the rest of the pieces can come together on the mound this will be a tough team to beat when the lineup is clicking. Micah Von showed well out of the lead-off spot as he worked 3 walks and sets the tone for the offense. Rory Lichtman, Grant Jackson, and Parker Burst all had multi-hit games and paced the offense. All three are significant contributors for the team while providing strong defensive makeups to match. Jorge Montano took the biggest swing of the night as he came through with a 2 RBI XBH for the walk-off winner. James Huey and Warren Gage also had hits for the Vikings. For the Wildcats the depth of the lineup 1-9 stands out as they are willing to work walks and lay down a bunt to advance a teammate. Alec Koehly and Michael Renals showed well as they had base-hits. Dunwoody has a bitter taste after a late game 1 loss and looks to take the series across the DH back home.
