2026 Spring Team Preview: Gorham (ME)
GORHAM, Maine - Despite losing three solid pitchers and a starting catcher to graduation, hopes are high that 2026 could be a big year for Gorham, which finished 12-6 last season, losing in the state semifinals.
“We are a consistent upper tier, playoff caliber team, year in and year out,” pointed out third-year head coach Ed Smith, who begins his fifth season in the program and 18th in the Southwestern Maine Activities Association. “This team is made up of high-character, team-first guys. I really like our athleticism and baseball IQ.”
Seniors Miles Brenner and Wyatt Washburn are two reasons for the optimism from Smith. The 208th-ranked 2026 in New England, Brenner was 3-1 with a 1.93 ERA a year ago, striking out 22. The number 25 senior shortstop in New England, a Wheaton College commit, will be helped out this year by Washburn, the 90th-rated senior RHP in New England who last year went 3-0 with a 1.78 ERA, fanning 24 in 19.2 innings. The Colby College recruit also batted .391 with 10 RBIs.
Alabama commit Hunter Finck brings more promise to the squad after the sixth-rated junior right-handed pitcher in New England had a nice year at the plate as a sophomore with seven RBIs and a .327 batting average.
Cooper Whitehead will move from right field to his natural position behind the plate for his junior year with the Rams after hitting .311 with nine RBIs and five stolen bases. Another junior, Dante Cuesta, is being counted on to contribute on the mound and at third base.
“Our strengths should be our pitching and experience,” Smith noted. “We have some very good arms and several guys who have played a lot of varsity baseball. But we need to play more consistent defense overall and fill our holes in the outfield.”
Wyatt Nadeau, a right-handed pitcher now at Vanderbilt, southpaw Jack Karlonas, now at Husson University, along with catcher Mason Finck and RHP Casey Skolfield leave big holes to fill.
“Like everyone, we need to stay healthy and if we do, we should be able to compete,” related Smith, who lists senior utility player Izak Stevens, junior outfielder Sawyer Smith and junior infielder/outfielder/pitcher Bennett Deveaux as newcomers ready to step up. “We need to be more mentally tough late in games and down the stretch to be successful.
“I expect that we will work hard every day and should be among the top teams in the league,” Smith continued. “If we use our depth and play hard-nosed baseball every day, we should be able to compete among the top teams in the league.”
