Notable Recaps from Wednesday

Helena (7) vs. Vestavia Hills (6)
Helena held off a late rally to secure a 7-6 win on Wednesday, building a six-run lead before surviving a dramatic seventh-inning push. The Huskies jumped out early with a sacrifice fly from Tyler West in the first, then added three more runs in the second as Hudson Campbell and West each drew RBI walks before Davis Kelley delivered an RBI single. Helena finished with 11 hits, led by Campbell, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and two singles. Brayden Dockery and West each drove in two runs, while Samuel Odom, Jonathan Roberto, and Kelley all added multiple hits to pace the offense. On the mound, Justin Mullenix delivered a strong start, allowing one run over 5.2 innings while striking out six, before Jackson Dassau added a scoreless inning of relief. Vestavia Hills made things interesting in the seventh, scoring five runs, highlighted by a grand slam from Charlie Taaffe, who finished with four RBIs and two hits. Despite the late surge, Helena held on to complete the 7-6 victory.

St. Paul's Episcopal (7) vs. Orange Beach (6)
St. Paul’s Episcopal earned a dramatic walk-off victory on Wednesday, edging Orange Beach 7-6 after freshman Evan Hawarah drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh to force in the winning run. The Saints collected 11 hits in the win and showed patience at the plate, drawing seven walks while also swiping five bases. Tate Johnston led the offensive effort with a perfect 3-for-3 performance, including a key RBI double in the sixth inning during a four-run rally that gave the Saints a temporary lead. Sims Brown, Hawarah, and Tate Farrell also drove in runs during that inning to help St. Paul’s take control before the late drama. Orange Beach fought back to tie the game in the seventh after Brayden Hood tripled down the right-field line, while Ward Hickman delivered a big performance at the plate with two hits, two home runs, and four RBIs. On the mound, Max Boulo earned the win in relief for the Saints, tossing two innings while allowing two runs (both unearned). Despite Orange Beach’s late push, St. Paul’s ability to string together timely hits and work key walks ultimately secured the walk-off win.

Saint James (4) vs. Lee-Scott Academy (1)
Saint James picked up a solid midweek win on Wednesday, defeating Lee-Scott Academy 4-1 behind a strong pitching performance and clean defense. The Trojans jumped ahead early in the first inning, scoring twice after a Lee-Scott error plated one run and JB Braswell followed with an RBI groundout. Michael Hassell earned the win on the mound for Saint James, allowing one run on four hits over five innings while striking out five. Luke Catchings added two scoreless innings in relief to help secure the victory. The Trojans backed their pitching staff with a clean defensive effort, committing no errors in the field. Offensively, Mason Craig, Grant Goff, Jimmy Dickens, and Wilson Aman each recorded a hit, while Braswell and Goff drove in runs. Dickens also added speed on the bases with two stolen bases. Lee-Scott Academy was led offensively by Preston Huguley, who had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-4 and swiping two bases, but Saint James’ early scoring and steady pitching proved to be the difference.

Russell County (9) vs. Auburn (5)
Russell County picked up a quality midweek win on Wednesday, defeating Auburn 9-5 behind key production from the bottom half of the lineup. Hunter Phillips, Harley Shoffner, and Victor Hernandez combined for four of the team’s seven hits, scoring two runs and driving in five RBIs in the victory. The Warriors struck first in the second inning, plating two runs after Hernandez drove in a run with a groundout and Auburn committed an error. Auburn answered in the third when Brady Sack delivered an RBI double to even the game at 2-2. Russell County quickly regained control in the fourth inning, scoring three runs highlighted by a solo home run from freshman Van Richards. Conner Cox earned the win on the mound, allowing five runs over 5.1 innings while striking out four. Ryder Kiesel was dominant in relief, tossing 1.2 hitless innings with five strikeouts to help close out the game. Offensively, Hernandez led the Warriors with three RBIs, while Phillips and Shoffner each recorded two hits. Auburn was paced by Brady Sack, who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Angelo Santiago and Bryson Sheppard both homered for the Tigers.

Pelham (3) vs. Shelby County (1)
Pelham earned a hard-fought 3-1 win on Wednesday in a pitcher’s duel where both starters turned in strong performances. Shelby County struck first in the opening inning when Andrew Knight delivered an RBI single, but Pelham answered in the second after Braden Lee lifted a sacrifice fly to even the score. The game remained tied until the sixth inning, when Garin Fitts delivered an RBI single to give Pelham the lead before Dylan Smith followed with another run-scoring single to provide some insurance. Mason Six earned the complete-game win on the mound for Pelham, allowing one run on five hits across seven innings while walking none. Shelby County starter Nate Byrne was also effective, going six innings while allowing three runs on five hits in the tough-luck loss. Offensively, Fitts, Smith, and Lee each drove in a run for Pelham, while the defense backed its pitching staff with a clean, error-free game. Shelby County was led by Knight, who drove in the team’s lone run, while Skylar Smith added two stolen bases in the loss.
