BC Preseason Invitational: Quick Hits (Upperclass)

Jaxson Smith-Peterson
Lead Scout, Western Canada

On Monday, February 16th, the Prep Baseball BC staff hosted the first annual British Columbia Preseason Invitational.

This invite only event featured roughly 55 prospects in the 2026 - 2030 classes and it was another strong group that featured some of the top players in their respective classes and provided some strong leaderboards on both the positional side and the pitching side. This event, alongside Preseason Events across the country, serve as qualifiers for roster spots on Prep Baseball Canada National Team's at events such as the Future Games, Senior Future Games, West Coast Games, West Coast Super Sophomore Games and the Best of the West.

All player ran through a full workout that included batting practice and bullpens captured on TrackMan, as well as 30-yard sprints captured by VALD Performance. Over the next several days we'll be highlighting top performers from the event within our post-event analysis. Stay locked into our social media channels over the next several days as we continue to push out video, leaderboards and more.

Today, we will continue our post-event coverage within this Quick Hits article as we provide scouting notes and video on six upperclassmen who caught our staff's attention.

BC Preseason Invitational: Quick Hits (Upperclass)

Daniel Dykema OF / Argyle Secondary, BC / 2026

Dykema by far had the loudest rounds of BP out of the players in attendance. The North Shore Twins product topped the leaderboard in four out of seven offensive categories, highlighted by a max exit velocity of 104.8 mph. Other notable metrics include an average exit velocity of 96.2 mph, a max distance of 374 ft, and a hard hit percentage of 93%.

Standing at 6-foot-6 ,the frame sticks out at and with size added over the offseason, Dykema is now listed at 220-pounds. The Cloud County commit showed off a healthy and strong arm in the outfield with throws reaching 91 mph. Overall, it was another strong day for Dykema who has generated some buzz among pro evaluators heading into the 2026 season.

Harlan Chervatin OF / RHP / Salt Spring, BC / 2026

Chervatin stole the show during the pitching portion of the event. He was the first arm to toe the rubber and reached back for a 90.1 mph fastball on his first live pitch of the day, immediately grabbing our attention. The fastball averaged 89.2 mph over his bullpen  with above average carry (18.1” IVB). The curveball (71-76 mph) showed two-plane movement (-7.4” IVB/-10.5” HM) and has the makings of a swing and miss weapon with some refinement.

It’s a quick arm with a moderate effort delivery ending in an over the top release. Listed at 6-foot,160-pounds, there is physical maturity still to come down the line and it’s easy to project more velocity with an additional 15-20 pounds on the frame.

This was our first live look at Chervatin since the fall of 2024, as the Eagles prospect took all of last season off, but does not appear to have missed a beat and is a senior arm (2027 eligible) our staff will be out to see early in the season.

Hudson Sawatzky RHP / GW Graham, BC / 2027

Our staff had heard some buzz from coaches and on X that Sawatzky had taken a velocity jump over the winter, and he backed that up at the BCPI, showing up visibly stronger at 6-foot, 190-pounds. During his bullpen, the Blaze right-hander sat 85-86, reaching 87 mph with up to 17.2” of IVB. There has always been arm speed present, and now the strength has caught up allowing him to take full advantage of that. The overall arsenal became deeper when Sawatzky debuted a newly developed cutter at 78-82 that has the makings of a legitimate weapon (7.0” IVB/-3.4” HM). This was by far the strongest in-event showing we’ve seen from Sawatzky who is trending in the right direction as he enters his junior season.

Aiden Fujita OF / Yale Secondary, BC / 2026

The uncommitted senior out of the Abbotsford Cardinals program had arguably the most complete all around performance on the day. Fujita kicked off his day with a 3.86 second 30 yard dash, good for 3rd best at the event. The right-handed batter was on the barrel consistently during BP with a max exit velocity of 95.9 mph and averaged 90.2 with a 72% sweet spot rate. Finally, during the outfield workout, his throws reached 88 mph. Fujita is a quality uncommitted senior out of Abbotsford that JUCO’s should be circling back on as they begin to finalize their recruiting classes.

Oscar Leah OF / LHP / Langley Secondary School, BC / 2027

One of the higher profile names in attendance, Leah backed up the hype with his performance, even without stepping on the mound. The Junior National team member showed off the arm strength on the mound with all 5 throws registering at 90 mph or higher, peaking at 94. During BP, Leah ran exit velocities into the mid 90’s, peaking at 96.0 with a 70% sweet spot rate. Batted balls reached a max distance of 338 ft while showing a propensity for using the middle of the field. There's present strength in the compact 5-foot-11,183-pound frame with a valuable L/L two-way profile. Leah is a high academic, impact athlete to know heading into the 2026 season.

Carter Bestebroer OF / 1B / Unity Christian School, BC / 2026

Bestebroer is no stranger to our staff, with over a two year track record in the Prep Baseball ecosystem. The former Senior Future Gamer showed well once again and is another uncommitted senior to check in on out of the Langley Blaze program. Bestebroer started his day by showing off a quick first step, posting a 1.68 second 10 yard split (tied for best among senior outfielders). He then displayed a strong and improved arm in the outfield with a 94 mph throw, up 6 mph from workout day at Lakepoint in the summer.

While this wasn't the loudest offensive performance we’ve seen from Bestebroer, his max EV still exceeded 95 mph with a max distance of 338 ft and hard hit rate of 44.4%. Our staff has seen the left-handed hitting outfielder hit balls as hard as 99 mph, as recently as last week, and perform in-game against quality pitching numerous times. A top performer for Canada at the Senior Future Games, Bestebroer will make for a very nice late pickup for whatever school grabs him.
