Slammers Scout Day: Takeaways

On June 8th, the Prep Baseball Illinois staff hosted the Slammers Scout Day at Grayslake Central HS in Grayslake, IL. 53 players participated in a pro-style workout, gathering unrivaled access to data through our state-of-the-art tech partners, as well as in-depth scouting analysis from our Prep Baseball Illinois staff.
Today, we will be looking at the prospects that stood out to our staff within this Takeaways story.
Position Players
+ C Nick Sellers (Libertyville, 2028)
6-foot, 155-pounds, lean and wiry build with remaining projection. At the plate, showed a loose, longer swing with a flat path, on the barrel with line-drive intent. Projectable frame with more power to come, middle and pull-side emphasis. Steady defensive actions, clean glove to hand with an accurate arm, pop-times working in the 2.14-2.26 range.
+ C Devon Fuller (Glenbrook North, 2029)
5-foot-6, 161-pound frame, rounded shoulders with present strength. Right-handed hitter, compact and strong, balanced with a heavy barrel, clean and flat swing, hitterish look. Pop-time working in the 2.18-2.33 range.
+ C/INF Jason Bettarelli (Vernon Hills, 2029)
5-foot-7, lean and wiry frame with plenty of room to add strength in the coming years. Right-handed hitter, twitchy and athletic swing with bat-speed, controlled load with intent through the zone. Athlete to follow moving forward.
+ OF/RHP Tyson Adrianopoli (New Trier, 2029)
6-foot, 158-pound frame, projectable and wiry build, long-levered with room to add strength. Right-handed hitter, intentful with a steep path, present bat-speed, pull-side intent, flat swing that produced line-drives.
+ INF Nate Robbins (Lake Forest, 2027)
5-foot-11, 165-pound frame, athletic with wiry levers, proportionate. Right-handed hitter, compact and consistent uphill swing, clean swing with bat-speed, balanced throughout, middle of the field approach that worked on the barrel, 95 mph peak EV, 91 mph average, 351’ peak distance. Smooth defender with a steady glove on the dirt, two-handed funnel out front, easy actions.
+ OF Cole Pawlowski (Libertyville, 2029)
6-foot, 180-pounds, long-levered, projectable frame. Left-handed hitter, longer and flat swing, clean and on-plane, stays through the zone with line-drive intent, projects into more power as he continues to gain strength - peaked at 94 mph for his EV.
+ C Daniel Cope (Grayslake Central, 2028)
6-foot, 180-pound build, athletic with a high waist, lean and proportionate frame. Right-handed hitter, clean and repeatable swing with some feel to use the whole field - uphill swing with a balanced finish. One of the top defenders on the day, clean glove-to-hand, strong arm that plays true from a high release, quick transfers - pop-times worked in the 2.12-2.14 range, accurate on the bag throughout.
+ INF Blake Sorenson (Libertyville, 2028), C Kieren Crothers (Grayslake Central, 2029), INF Cade Tyrell (Libertyville, 2028), INF Charlie McRae (Vernon Hills, 2029) and OF Mason Schrage (Stevenson, 2028) are some more names that showed well on the day and deserve mentions.
Two-Ways
+ RHP/INF Jacob Huber (Libertyville, 2028)
Loose and flat swing, on-plane, some lift pull-side, uses levers well, more power to come. Natural actions, strong arm across with carry, athletic mover, body flows. Loose and elastic mover with a whippy arm, layback in the shoulder before firing through with a high ¾ release. Fastball worked in the 82-84 mph range with life through the zone, pairing with an upper-60s curveball and low-70s changeup.
+ LHP/1B Logan Danforth (Libertyville, 2029)
5-foot-11, 160-pound frame, high-waisted and lean with a projectable look. Loose and flat left-handed swing, middle of the field approach with line-drives, some feel to use the whole field. Loose, athletic mover on the mound, fastball worked up to 80 mph and paired with a sweeping curveball with over 20” of horizontal break at times, 64-67 mph. Showed a shorter slider with 2/8 break at 70-72 mph, along with a fading changeup in the same range.
+ INF Gunnar Schmid (Warren, 2029)
5-foot-9, 163-pound frame, rounded shoulders with a proportionate build, athletic. Wide base, right-handed hitter with a longer, flat swing, stays through the zone for a long time, worked up to 90 mph for his peak EV. Clean swing, name to follow. Clean and repeatable mover on the mound with a simple delivery, longer arm action with a ¾ slot.
+ INF Ben Sutphen (New Trier, 2029)
6-foot-2, 183-pound frame, long-levered and wiry, plenty of room to add strength. Right-handed hitter, twitchy with a flat swing, on the barrel pull-side and up the middle with line-drives, 96 mph peak EV, averaged 87 mph, 356’ peak distance. Steady, smooth actions on the infield, arm is strong and accurate across, peaking at 77 mph. Stretch only delivery on the mound, athletic mover, gets into his legs and moves quickly downhill, slight cross-fire stride. Quick arm, ¾ slot, longer arm action in the back. Fastball worked up to 81 mph, paired with a curveball with short 11/5 shape in the upper-60s. Flashed straight changeup in the low-70s, some strikes.
+ INF Colin McMurray (Vernon Hills, 2027)
5-foot-10, 170-pounds, athletic and proportionate build. Right-handed hitter, balanced setup, creates a stretch with the hands, quick hands that work inside the baseball, some lift pull-side at times, 91 mph peak EV. Smooth and athletic defender on the dirt, soft hands with quick actions and transfers, sufficient arm-strength with a quick release, 81 mph across. Quality runner with a 6.92 in the 60. Quick, up-tempo delivery, higher arm slot and release. Fastball worked up to 84 mph with carry traits, sitting 81-83 mph. Curveball and slider both played in the low-70s with short bullet action, along with a changeup in the upper-70s with slight run arm-side.
Pitchers
+ RHP Beau Barrows (Grayslake Central, 2028)
5-foot-10, 147-pound frame, high-waisted and projectable, room to add more strength, long-levers. Loose and flexible mover, long-levered operation with a higher ¾ release, easy to project on the frame and movement patterns. Fastball worked in the 82-83 mph range with arm-side run, pairing with a short 11/5 curveball in the 70-71 mph range. Also showed a running changeup in the low-70s to complete his three-pitch mix.
+ RHP Elliot Knapper (Libertyville, 2028)
5-foot-11, 143-pound frame, long-levered and wiry, room to add more strength and grow into his frame. Gets down the mound well while working in-line, longer arm action and high release, fastball played in the 80-83 mph range with backspin and carry. Curveball showed horizontal sweeping action over 18” at times, 65-67 mph. Flashed feel for a fading changeup in the low-70s.
+ RHP Logan Boggs (Libertyville, 2028)
6-foot-3, 170-pounds, highly projectable and long-levered. Simple delivery with a short balance point, stride works in-line, quick arm from a high over the top release, creates some angle on his low-80s fastball. Showed carry traits on the fastball while pairing it with a short bullet curveball in the upper-60s. Changeup played in the 68-70 mph range with slight fade arm-side. High ceiling arm to follow.
+ RHP Sean McMahon (Libertyville, 2029)
6-foot-4, 180-pounds, extremely projectable, long-limbs with a high waist, wiry build with room to add. Fastball worked up to 80 mph with some arm-side run. Two-plane slider plays in the 67-68 mph range. Showed some feel for his changeup with arm-side fade, 70-71 mph. Long-levered operation that gets extension down the mound, lower and deceptive release.
+ RHP Bryce Parvis (Libertyville, 2029)
6-foot-3, 160-pounds, lanky and high-waisted build, all sorts of room to add strength and fill out in the coming years. Simple and compact leg-lift, works in-line, quick arm from a higher release. Fastball played in the mid-70s with jumps likely, also showed short 11/5 curveball in low-60s and feel for a slight fading changeup in the low-70s.
+ RHP Brady Goldberg (Vernon Hills, 2029)
5-foot-8, 135-pound frame, lean and athletic build. Bouncy, athletic mover on the mound, quick arm and high ¾ release. Fastball played up to 79 mph with carry, also showed a 10/4 curveball at 61-63 mph and a running changeup at 67-69 mph.
+ RHP Sev Griffiths (Libertyville, 2028)
5-foot-11, 170-pounds, proportionate frame. Loose, athletic mover, high leg-lift, syncs up well, creates layback into footstrike, quick arm and high ¾ release. Fastball played 80-82 mph with life through the zone. Big sweeping shape on the curveball with over 17” of horizontal break at times, 69-71 mph. Slider was shorter with more bullet shape in the low-70s. Final offering was a changeup with heavy arm-side run, 74-76 mph.
