Quick Hits: 2026 Lake Charles Summer ID

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Moss Bluff, LA - On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the Prep Baseball Louisiana staff traveled Sam Houston High School, home of the back-to-back Division I (Non-Select) State Champions, to host our first event of the summer with our Lake Charles Summer ID, which featured over 40 players in the state's 2027-2029 classes.  Each participant went through a pro-style workout that consisted of running a laser-timed 60 yard dash using Vald Performance, defensive evaluations, and batting practice using Trackman Baseball and Blast Motion.  Each pitcher threw a bullpen with Trackman Baseball running to receive all of their pitching data and metrics.  Below, we take a look at the top Trackman pitching metrics from Tuesday's event.

Bryce Kellum RHP / SS/ Pearl River, LA / 2028

Kellum was one of the biggest winners from the Louisiana Summer ID and firmly established himself as a name to know in Louisiana’s 2028 class. The 6-foot-1, 165-pound right-hander possesses a lean, athletic frame with plenty of room to add strength over the coming years. He worked with a quick, loose arm action and showed an advanced ability to create extension down the mound, allowing his stuff to play up out of the hand.

The sophomore's fastball sat 87-90 mph, an eye-opening velocity for his age, and he complemented it with a deep four-pitch mix. His slider was arguably his most impressive secondary offering, coming in at 74-76 mph with spin rates ranging from 2,382-2,510 RPM, showing the ability to generate both swing-and-miss and weak contact. Kellum also mixed in an 80-81 mph changeup with developing feel and a 77-79 mph splitter that flashed late action. The combination of present velocity, athleticism, arm speed, and advanced feel for spin makes him one of the more intriguing young arms in the state, and a prospect whose stock is trending sharply upward heading into the summer circuit.

Logan Nelson 1B / LHP / Jesuit, LA / 2028

Nelson turned in one of the more impressive pitching performances of the event and continues to solidify himself as one of the premier left-handed prospects in Louisiana’s 2028 class. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound southpaw possesses a strong, physical frame and showed a polished four-pitch arsenal with advanced strike-throwing ability. His delivery creates a naturally high release point, allowing him to work on a steep downhill plane that makes life difficult for hitters from both sides of the plate.

The fastball sat 84-87 mph and played up thanks to an average extension of 6-foot-9, allowing the pitch to get on hitters quickly while he consistently commanded it to both sides of the plate. Nelson showed the ability to manipulate his breaking balls as well, landing a 73-74 mph curveball with quality shape and depth while also mixing in a tighter 75-76 mph slider. He rounded out his arsenal with a 78-79 mph changeup that showed promising feel and the ability to neutralize opposite-handed hitters. With his combination of size, present stuff, pitchability, and command, Nelson looks poised to be a high-follow arm in Louisiana’s 2028 class over the next several years.

Riggins Portie OF / Sam Houston, LA / 2028

Portie continues to impress as one of the more physical and explosive position players in Louisiana’s 2028 class. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound outfielder possesses a strong, athletic build and showed an aggressive offensive approach throughout the workout. He never looks passive in the box, hunting pitches he can drive and consistently looking to do damage.

At the plate, Portie showcased quick turns and present bat speed, producing loud contact primarily from the middle of the field to the pull side. His strength and intent were evident as he registered exit velocities up to 98.6 mph, one of the top marks among underclass hitters at the event. He also showed that his athleticism extends beyond the batter’s box, turning in a laser-timed 6.71-second 60-yard dash. With a combination of physicality, bat speed, power potential, and above-average run times, Portie is a high-upside prospect who should continue to garner attention as he develops.

Evan Pearce 1B / OF / Rosepine, LA / 2028

Pearce continued to build on what was an outstanding junior campaign with another strong showing at the Louisiana Summer ID. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound uncommitted prospect possesses a mature, physical frame and consistently found the barrel throughout his workout. He showed an advanced feel for impact, repeatedly driving baseballs to the pull-side gap with authority and recording a max exit velocity of 100.2 mph.

Beyond the offensive production, Pearce also demonstrated noticeable gains in his athleticism since our previous look. He turned in a 6.84-second 60-yard dash, highlighting improved speed that should only enhance his overall profile moving forward. The performance comes on the heels of a tremendous spring season for Rosepine, where he hit .455 with 2 home runs and 52 RBI while helping lead the Eagles&w; offense. With a proven track record of production, present strength, and continued physical development, Pearce remains one of the more intriguing uncommitted bats in Louisiana’s 2027 class heading into the summer.

Carter Bokun RHP / Catholic (BR), LA / 2028

Bokun was another intriguing young arm that caught our attention at the Louisiana Summer ID. The 6-foot-3, 175-pound right-hander offers a unique look on the mound with a high over-the-top release that creates a difficult angle for hitters and plenty of projection remaining in his lean, athletic frame. While still early in his development, he showed flashes of what could become a very promising arsenal as he continues to mature physically and refine his craft.

The freshman worked with an 83-84 mph fastball that featured 17.3 inches of induced vertical break and 8.5 inches of horizontal movement, allowing the pitch to play well through the top of the strike zone. He complemented the heater with a 71-73 mph curveball that showed developing shape and depth, while his 75-76 mph splitter was particularly intriguing, generating nearly 1,000 RPM less spin than his fastball and flashing late tumble beneath barrels. With his size, unique release characteristics, and promising pitch metrics, Bokun has the ingredients to become another quality arm in Catholic (BR)’s pitching pipeline over the next few years.
