This Tuesday, Prep Baseball trekked up to Bainbridge Island to watch the defending 2A state champions as Bainbridge hosted North Kitsap. Both sides featured a wealth of talent all over the field, with Bainbridge rallying late to secure a 4-1 victory. Below are scouting notes on standout players in this look.

Bainbridge vs. North Kitsap (5.5.26)

Bainbridge

'26 RHP/INF McCrea Curfman (Utah Valley Commit)
In a game where the Spartan offense was held quiet for most of the afternoon, Curfman delivered a strong start on the mound to keep his team in the game. The experienced, high-mileage arm showcased his familiar polished, repeatable operation, working deep as he has done several times in recent years. Curfman attacked with a mid-80's fastball that carried life up in the zone, paired with a shorter cutter/slider and changeup offspeed arsenal. The righty mostly competed in the zone and generated weak contact, particularly in the early innings. His final line on the mound: 7 IP, 7 H, R, 2 BB, 5 K. The leadoff hitter in this one also added 2 hits including a ringing, low line drive double late in the game. Curfman was a frontrunner in our preseason POTY watchlist and is a critical two-way piece for Bainbridge as they look to repeat as 2A champs.

'26 OF AJ Larsen (Chemeketa CC Commit)
The senior had the big swing of the day in one of the biggest moments we've seen all spring, delivering a grand slam in the bottom of the 6th with Bainbridge trailing 1-0 at that point. The senior did well to stay back just long enough on a pitch down and away, muscling one just over the fence in LF. Larsen finished the day 1-1 with the homer and 2 HBP's overall. The righty looks to have added some physicality, with enough athleticism and closing speed to man centerfield defensively. Slotted near the bottom of the order in one of the deepest lineups in the state, Larsen has the ability to change the game with his speed and hit tools.

'26 INF Braden French (WSU Academic Commit)
The long, lean-framed senior had a nice day at the plate, finishing 2-3 with a run scored in this one. The lefty stick sets in a relaxed, balanced stance, creating a wider base with some natural loft at impact. The loose-wristed stroke plays to the pull side with a double over the head of the RF as his big hit of the day. French also made the routine play at 2B defensively, doing a nice job staying with some tough hops on the ground. The experienced senior brings a confidence and serves as a quality depth piece for the Spartans.

'26 OF/RHP Trey Thompson (Oregon Commit)
An electric arm talent on the mound, Thompson showcased his versatility with a productive game offensively on Tuesday. The righty finished 2-3 with a pair of singles, including a hit to keep the line moving in Bainbridge's huge 6th inning. Defensively, Thompson profiles well in a corner OF role with his imposing 6'4-6'5 frame with present, durable strength. The arm flashed plus pregame and has been seen into the low 90's on the mound in other looks.

'28 C Henry Olsen (Uncommitted)
Olsen was a breakout performer at this winter's PNW Preseason All-State and looked the part in this in-game look as well. The sophomore carries a potent bat, flashing plus bat speed and near triple exit velocity power in a showcase setting. On Tuesday, he went 1-2 with a single and a walk in the cleanup spot for the Spartans. The lefty works with a more narrow base and a controlled, tight turn through the zone. There's a ton to like on the offensive side with legitimate power potential. Olsen DH'ed in this game but has also showed ability at the catcher position in the past. Intriguing follow heading into the summer.

North Kitsap

'28 C Teague Weible (Uncommitted)
The lone Viking to collect a multi-hit game in this one, Weible reached with an infield single early before adding another line drive base hit in the middle innings. A 6'2 righty with lean strength present, Weible sets in an open stance with a gradual load widening the base and a slight uphill path through the zone. The righty has a feel for the barrel with adjustability and strength through contact. Weible also limited the run game from the catcher position and showed developing ability with his frames and blocks. The bat leads the way to this point, and Weible will be a name to know as his recruiting period opens in the coming months.

'29 INF Caleb Novick (Uncommitted)
Any time a freshman is already manning the shortstop position and hitting in the 2 hole at the varsity level, it is sure to turn some heads. Novick looked the part in all facets of his game and is a name to know in the years to come. A medium-framed righty, Novick moved well laterally with softer hands and developing arm strength defensively. At the plate, its a contact-over-power approach at this point with a quality mechanical operation and a flatter path through the zone. Novick's swing carries fluidity with a firm front side at contact, finishing 1-3 in this game.

'26 1B Spencer Gillespie (Lower Columbia Commit)
An athletic R/R with tools that will play collegiately, Gillespie reached base three times in this game, including a double that drove in the lone run of the game for North Kitsap. The senior got all of a pitch middle-away, lifting it high and deep to LCF for a long double in the 5th inning. The RH swing works through a simple leg lift load with an uphill plane through the zone. Gillespie also walked twice, showcasing some quality discipline to draw the only free passes of the day for the Vikings. The senior manned 1B well but could realistically man a corner OF role with 7.1 speed and a sound arm. Experienced middle of the order bat.

'26 RHP Lincoln Chirgwin (Uncommitted)
The senior delivered a true gritty start for the Vikings, delivering 5 innings of shutout ball before finally running into some trouble in the 6th. Despite the one blemish at the end, Chirgwin was exceptional, changing speeds constantly with a cutter-type fastball and a couple different breaking balls thrown regularly. A compact-framed righty, Chirgwin worked through a simple wind with a tight, shorter arm path and high 3/4 slot release. The righty struck out 6 over 5.1 total innings of work and worked around traffic in some big spots in the early and middle innings.
