Alabama Fall Watchlist: Vol. 1

Prep Baseball Alabama Staff

ALABAMA - With the summer circuit in the rearview and the fall season getting underway, the Prep Baseball Alabama staff is excited to introduce the Alabama Fall Watchlist, a recurring weekly series highlighting prospects from across the state who warrant attention heading into the offseason.

Each volume will feature a collection of players from multiple classes and stages of the recruiting process. From uncommitted seniors who remain available to college programs, to 2028 prospects entering an important stretch in their recruitment, and younger names beginning to establish themselves within the state, the goal is to provide a fresh look at players our staff believes are worth following.

For our opening edition, we highlight 12 prospects across three categories: Uncommitted Seniors, 2028s to Follow, and Underclass Names to Know.

Uncommitted Seniors 🔎

With the fall season underway, the 2027 class remains a priority on the recruiting trail. Below, we highlight a group of uncommitted seniors who have continued to show college-level tools and warrant attention from programs heading into the fall.

RHP Jamarkius Smith (Reeltown, 2027)
One of the more talented arms in the state, Smith has been a known name since reaching the low-90s as a freshman. The athletic 6-foot-3, 180-pound right-hander can run the fastball up to 94 mph with arm-side run and pairs it with a wipeout low-80s slider that he leans on heavily. Command has scattered at times, but the raw stuff and arm talent are hard to ignore when everything is synced up. A standout quarterback who committed to Jacksonville State for football this summer, Smith still possesses the type of ability on the mound that should keep the attention of college baseball programs.

RHP Cade Mason (Saraland, 2027)
One of the top arms in South Alabama for quite some time, Mason combines quality stuff with advanced pitchability and a starter's look. The strong 6-foot-2, 205-pound right-hander works through a clean, low-effort delivery with a fastball that reaches the upper-80s, showing excellent feel for his slider while also mixing a changeup. He's dominated high school competition each of the past two seasons, following a 7-2 record and 0.85 ERA as a sophomore with a 9-2 mark, 0.46 ERA and 95 strikeouts across 61 innings as a junior. The combination of strikes, three-pitch feel and a proven track record makes Mason an intriguing uncommitted arm in the 2027 class.

1B Carson Stancil (Cullman, 2027)
Stancil continues to show as one of the top uncommitted run-producing bats in the state with serious thump in the barrel. A physical 6-foot, 200-pound left-handed hitter, he turns the barrel with intent and has the ability to do damage to the pull side. Put together a massive junior campaign while helping Cullman to a 20-plus win season, hitting .474 with five doubles, six home runs and 18 RBI while striking out just nine times in 103 plate appearances. The combination of impact and consistent contact gives Stancil an offensive profile worth following closely this fall.

1B Hayden Jones (Central-Phenix City, 2027)
A reliable right-handed bat with quality hit and power traits, Jones has been a multi-year starter in the heart of the Central lineup. Looks the part at a strong 6-foot-1, 195-pounds with enough athleticism to potentially move off first base and provide some positional flexibility moving forward. The bat is the carrying tool, showing a simple right-handed swing with consistent bat-to-ball ability and strength through contact. There's a well-rounded offensive profile here with the physicality to continue adding impact.

2028s to Follow 📈

Alabama's 2028 class has entered an important stage in the recruiting process, and there remains plenty of talent to follow throughout the state. With the Future Games recently concluding, this section will also provide an opportunity to highlight additional prospects throughout the class who warrant attention heading into the fall. While Future Games participants will certainly be featured throughout the series, the goal is to continue expanding the follow list and bringing attention to players across the state.

RHP Hunter Dailey (Shelby County, 2028)
One of Alabama's top arms in the class with plenty to like and dream on. The lean, projectable 6-foot-1, 165-pound right-hander features loose, whippy arm action with athletic movement patterns, running the fastball into the upper-80s and up to 91 mph with a sink profile (1817 RPM, 8.2" IVB avg.). Pairs it with a power slider at 77-81 mph that shows tight shape and has reached 2337 RPM. It's more control over command right now, but the present stuff and arm talent give Dailey plenty of upside as he continues to develop.

SS Nicholas Boatwright (Headland, 2028)
One of the top shortstops in the class with clear projection remaining in an impressive 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame. A quality athlete who has run a 6.85 60, Boatwright shows the actions and ability to stick at shortstop long-term. The right-handed swing is simple and quiet with a clean, repeatable path, producing loud gap-to-gap contact while showing a mature approach at the plate. There's a noticeable confidence to the game with the tools and overall look that continue to make him one of the more intriguing position players in Alabama's 2028 class.

1B Evan Daigle (McGill-Toolen Catholic, 2028)
Daigle established himself as one of the more impactful left-handed bats in the class this spring, hitting .418 with 15 doubles, four home runs and 45 RBI. There's real strength in the physical 5-foot-9, 215-pound frame, but he's more than just a power bat, showing good feel for the barrel and the ability to consistently drive the baseball from gap-to-gap. The ball jumps when he's on time with legitimate thump that should continue to play in the middle of an order. A primary first baseman presently, Daigle could ultimately provide some added versatility in a corner-outfield spot.

SS Jacob Thomas (Orange Beach, 2028)
One of the better shortstops in South Alabama's 2028 class, Thomas brings a well-rounded skill set and quality makeup to the field. An athletic 5-foot-11, 186-pound right-handed hitter, he controls the barrel throughout a repeatable swing with a line-drive approach and the ability to use the entire field. Defensively, his athleticism and actions give him the ability to handle multiple spots across the infield. The offensive foundation is firmly in place, and continued in-game production should only help elevate his profile within the class.

Underclass Names to Know ⭐

The younger classes across Alabama continue to take shape, with plenty of talent already beginning to emerge from the 2029 and 2030 groups. Evaluations at this stage lean heavily on present tools, athleticism, baseball ability, and long-term projection as these players continue to develop physically. This section will highlight some of the younger prospects who have already caught our staff's attention and are worth knowing early.

RHP Lathan Boddie (Faith Academy, 2029)
Boddie emerged in a big way as a freshman, serving as the primary back-end option for a loaded Faith Academy staff during its run to the Class 5A state title. Young for the class with a physical 6-foot, 205-pound frame, the right-hander already works comfortably at 87-89 mph and has reached 90 with a short, compact arm action and an easy, low-intent delivery. His mid-70s curveball shows quality vertical depth and gives him a legitimate secondary to work off the fastball. There's a confidence and presence to Boddie that stands out for his age, with plenty of reason to expect the arsenal to continue trending upward.

RHP/3B Harrison Colburn (Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, 2029)
Colburn is primed to make a sizable jump in the next 2029 rankings update after standing out at multiple Prep Baseball events this summer, including the Yellowhammer State Games. A physical 6-foot-1, 230-pound two-way prospect, he's shown plenty of ability on both sides, though the arm has especially jumped out with a strong four-pitch mix. The fastball works into the upper-80s with a compact arm action, pairing it with both a curveball and slider while flashing feel for a changeup. There's impact on the offensive side as well, with easy right-handed juice and the strength to drive the baseball with authority.

SS GG Wuis (Bob Jones, 2030)
Few players in Alabama's 2030 class have built a stronger early track record than Wuis, who was already hitting in the heart of the order for one of the state's top programs as an eighth grader. The left-handed bat continues to be the separator, working with loose, controlled actions and an advanced understanding of the strike zone while consistently finding the barrel against quality arms. At 5-foot-10, 156-pounds, there's still considerable physical development ahead with plenty of room for the offensive profile to continue adding impact. Looks at the Yellowhammer State Games and Junior Future Games only added to the profile, and Wuis heads into the fall firmly entrenched as one of Alabama's premier young bats.

RHP/SS Maxwell Kimbrell (Hartselle, 2030)
Kimbrell looked every bit like one of the top arms in the country for his age during the Junior Future Games, showing high-end stuff with plenty more still to come. He's added good weight over the past year to a strong 6-foot-1, 200-pound frame, while the arm talent remains the clear separator. The fastball comfortably sits 89-91 mph and reaches 92 mph, playing up with spin rates reaching 2525 RPM and 18-20 inches of induced vertical break. He pairs it with a 75-77 mph slider featuring sharp horizontal shape and spin up to 2795 RPM, while also flashing a changeup with arm-side fade. Kimbrell owns one of the more impressive young arsenals in the country and should make an immediate splash when the 2030 rankings debut later this fall.
