Brayden Harris was the story of the 2026 FHSAA Class 1A State Championship weekend, and he saved his best for last. The St. Johns Country Day right-hander dominated across both of the Spartans’ tournament appearances, but it was his complete-game, 10-strikeout gem in the championship game Saturday that sealed the title. St. Johns Country Day defeated Orangewood Christian 6-2 to cap a wire-to-wire run through the 1A bracket.

Semifinal: St. Johns Country Day 5, Schoolhouse Prep 0

St. Johns Country Day opened tournament play Thursday morning with a clean 5-0 shutout of Schoolhouse Prep, leaning on a combined pitching effort from Brayden Harris and Gavin Coffey to keep the Wolfpack off the board entirely. Harris worked three and two-thirds innings, striking out five without issuing a walk before handing it to Coffey, who matched him with five more punchouts over the final three-plus frames. The two combined for 10 strikeouts, holding Schoolhouse Prep to four hits.

St. Johns built the lead methodically. Madden Williams doubled to score the game’s first run in the bottom of the first, and the Spartans broke it open in the second on a two-hit sequence that pushed the lead to four. Kaeson Johns went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Harris added an RBI single, and Williams drove in another to fuel the offense.

Angel Delgado started and took the loss for Schoolhouse Prep, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits over five innings.

Semifinal: Orangewood Christian 6, St. John Neumann 4

Orangewood Christian punched their ticket to the championship game Thursday afternoon with a hard-fought 6-4 victory over St. John Neumann. Max Sakala was the engine for the Rams on both sides of the ball, throwing six and two-thirds innings with eight strikeouts while also going 3-for-4 with a double at the plate.

Orangewood Christian came out swinging in the first inning, pushing three runs across on two singles before Neumann had even settled in. Sakala drew first blood with a run-scoring single, and the Rams piled up 13 hits on the day across their lineup. Addison Lambert went 3-for-4 to lead the offense, while Sam Lambert added two hits and Aaron McClarnon contributed an RBI.

Neumann showed resilience, collecting nine hits and keeping it competitive throughout. Darien Kester led the Celtics with two RBI from the cleanup spot, and Taylor Reidy and Gus Fusco each went 2-for-4. Anthony Kanellos added a two-bagger and an RBI. Michael Hough took the loss after allowing nine hits and five runs over 3.2 innings, with Caden Hylemon tossing three innings of relief to keep Neumann within striking distance but not close enough.

State Championship: St. Johns Country Day 6, Orangewood Christian 2

If there was any doubt about who the best team in Class 1A was, Brayden Harris erased it Saturday afternoon. The St. Johns Country Day ace went the full seven innings against Orangewood Christian, striking out 10, walking one, and allowing just two runs, only one earned, on four hits. He threw 105 pitches, and his command never wavered.

St. Johns built their lead in the third inning when Preston Cole laid down a sacrifice bunt to get things started, Madden Williams singled to center, and Jonas Wells singled down the left-field line, each knocking in a run. Williams finished with two RBI on the afternoon and went 1-for-3 with a walk. The Spartans tacked on three more in the sixth to put the game away, with Hunter Rodgers leading the charge.

Orangewood Christian had their chances but couldn’t solve Harris on the day. Max Sakala and Sam Lambert each drove in a run for the Rams. Rhys Oldham started and gave up three earned runs over four innings, before the bullpen gave up three more in the sixth to allow St. Johns Country Day to pull away for good.

St. Johns Country Day are your 2026 FHSAA Class 1A State Champions.
