Saturday

Mary Persons @ Cherokee Bluff

Score: 12-2 (5), Cherokee Bluff wins series

Standouts:

Wiley Smith, 1B, 2026, Mary Persons

Bubba Coleman, SS, 2026, Cherokee Bluff

Bryce Fontenot, 1B, 2027, Cherokee Bluff

Beau Bruns, RHP/3B, 2026, Cherokee Bluff

Brody Hurd, OF, 2027, Cherokee Bluff

Key Moments: It was a loud start to the day offensively on both sides of the ball. Wiley Smith went after a 2nd pitch T1 and smoked it the other way for a solo HR, putting the Bulldogs up 1-0 early. It was a quick response, though, as Bubba Coleman laced a triple to the RF wall and came in to score on a 2 out knock by Brody Hurd. Hurd would also come around to score after a steal, error, and WP, making it 2-1. In the second, Bluff was pushing the issue again by getting a leadoff hitter on and playing good small ball to move him, then Bubba Coleman vaporized a long 2R HR, making it 4-1. The next inning had more big impact from the Bluff bats as Bryce Fontenot went after a 1st pitch and took it deep the other way for a no-doubter. Hurd followed this up with another 1B and came around to score on a pair of 1Bs by Cody Bridger (who would also score) and Jordan Wilkerson making it 7-1. Person’s would respond T4 as Bradley Hendricks got to an up and in pitch for a 3B, coming in on a SF9, ending the scoring for Mary Person’s at 7-2. A long 4th and 5th innings by the Bluff bats would put this game away as Bubba Coleman, Bryce Fontenot and Jordan Wilkerson picked up a hit, all making it a multi-hit effort for the trio. Brayden Couch ended things as he poked a hard hit GB down the line into the RF corner for a 2 RBI 2B, capping the game off at 12-2 after 5.

Takeaway: Game 3 is where we saw the more familiar Cherokee Bluff team as they had an offensive onslaught, scoring multiple runs in each of the 5 innings played for the run rule victory, placing them in the sweet 16. From the start it was loud action by the bats we’ve come to know, Bubba Coleman and Bryce Fontenot as they both picked up HRs on the day. It was a simple attack plan in the box that was executed to perfection as nearly every starter found their way on base. When Bluff works counts and stays within themselves, working for the team, they are a scary team to pitch to. On the hill, they got a great performance and worked well defensively giving up no errors and keeping runners put if/when they reached. They took a winning mentality into the must-win game and kept the foot down once it started to get out of hand. As Bluff moves on to play Troup, and if they are able to keep the grindy mindset in the box and stay fundamentally sound in the field and on the hill, they could be on alert to upset and keep their championship hopes alive.

Evans @ Loganville
Score: Loganville win, 10-0

Standouts:
Kaiden Howell, SS, 2026, Loganville

Jake Boland, 1B/RHP, 2026, Loganville

Devon Nixon, OF, 2027, Loganville

Taylor Stone, SS, 2027, Evans

Aiden Gorvett, OF, 2026, Loganville

Kayden Quiros, LHP, 2026, Loganville

Key Moments: The Red Devils got on the board in the 2nd inning after Zac Cuneio singled and Matt Berardinelli drove him in via an RBI single as it was 1-0 after 2. Kaiden Howell led off the 3rd with a double followed by a pair of bunts from Brantley Carter and Tripp Sapp to reach. Jake Boland came through with a 2 RBI 2B as Aiden Gorvett kept the line moving with an RBI 2B of his own. Devon Nixon capped off a 6-run inning as he added a 2 RBI single to make it 7-0 after 3. The score remained the same until the 7th. Kaiden Howell reached via an error and Brantley Carter drove him in on an RBI single as it was now 8-0. Tripp Sapp followed Carter with a single and then Jake Boland reached on a HBP to load the bases for Dawson Allen. The Sophomore would come through with a 2 RBI single to cap off the walk-off run-rule 10-0 win.

Avery’s Takeaway: The Red Devils came out of the gate hot and played their brand of baseball in a crucial must-win game. Multi-hit games from Kaiden Howell and Jake Boland paced the offense to a run-rule win. Kayden Quiros had a good showing on the mound and kept an opposing Evans squad in check. Loganville has a date with Roswell next round and will look to get back to Gwinnett come late May.

Walton @ Hillgrove

Score: Walton win, 11-1

Standouts:

Logan Wideman, 3B, 2026, Walton

Max Weimann, C/1B, 2027, Hillgrove

Ryan Pearson, OF, 2029, Walton

Westin Chen, RHP, 2026, Walton

Todd Haley, 1B, 2026, Walton

Key Moments: The Hawks would jump out to an early 1-0 lead after three innings thanks to yet another Max Weinmann barrel and two outstanding plays in the outfield from Ryan Burgess and Owen Tarentino doubled up the Raiders with outstanding plays from the outfield in back-to-back innings. Walton would find its stride in the 4th as the first four would pick up hits including RBI knocks from Max Maher and Ryan Pearson that would prompt a pitching change from the Hawks with the bases loaded and no outs. After back-to-back strikeouts, Logan Wideman would provide the back breaking blow with a grand slam to dead CF and cap off the 6-run inning. Some key hits from Todd Haley and Adler Bowen alongside some defensive miscues would help the Raiders notch another big inning in the 6th, scoring 5 more to close the game out.

Ian’s Takeaway: The defending 6A State Champions came into the playoffs a little banged up with a final-four type matchup in round one and came away with a hard-fought series win that can propel this roster to another deep run. Senior leadership came through huge in all three games with Todd Haley and Logan Wideman coming through with massive power output. Young talent is coming through big early in these playoffs with Max Maher and Ryan Pearson picking up both experience and confidence to carry into the later rounds. Another tough series will be on tap in the Sweet 16 whether it’s North Forsyth or Carrollton.

Greenbrier at Habersham

GM 3: 2-1 Habersham

Standouts:

Maverick Chitwood, CF/LHP, 2026, Habersham

Chaz Johnson, C/1B, 2028, Habersham

Jonathan White. LHP/1B, 2027, Greenbrier

Kreed Barrett, OF, 2026, Habersham

Key moments: It was a great environment for Game 3 at Habersham Central. Maverick Chitwood got the start for the Raiders and attacked from the first pitch, making strong plays on bunts early and doing a great job controlling the run game. Greenbrier got on the board in the 3rd when Drew Chester battled and flared an RBI single to right field. Jonathan White was in control on the mound for five innings, using his size and extension to generate plenty of in-zone whiffs. In the 5th, Carter Crane smoked a single up the middle and advanced on a wild pitch. Chaz Johnson followed by hammering a ball to right-center to tie the game at one. Chitwood continued to fill up the zone and got stronger as the game went on. Habersham threatened in the 7th with a double from Kreed Barrett, but the game went to extras after Mason Witt grounded out to shortstop. Chitwood set Greenbrier down in order before a weather delay, and both teams traded scoreless innings through the 8th. In the 9th, Barrett beat out a high chopper and moved to second on a wild pitch to give Witt another opportunity. This time, Witt delivered, driving a ball off the wall to walk it off and send the Raiders to the Sweet 16.

Takeaway: This was a very good baseball game played by two well-coached squads. Both starters filled up the zone and forced weak contact throughout the game. The defense should not go unnoticed, as both teams made several great plays to prevent runs early. Habersham played with tons of energy and fed off the home environment to win a Game 3 thriller. It was a competitive, back-and-forth game that came down to execution in key moments. Both teams showed toughness and never backed down, making this a very entertaining first-round matchup. Expect Habersham to keep playing with confidence and doing the little things right as they head to the Sweet 16 to face Woodward Academy.
