Throughout the VA/DC high school season, our staff travels far and wide to identify the best players in the Commonwealth. In additon to that, our staff delivers evaluations and video to assist players in their recruiting process. Every week our staff members provide notes and video in an assortment of scout blogs. Jordan Jones, the Virginia/DC Assistant Scouting Director, will be delivering his weekly scout blog on some of the players he saw during his travels.

King George
| |
Matthew Kane C / RHP / King George High, VA / 2027It was a quality start for Kane as he got the ball and worked his way into the eight innings in his start. He had success in the zone with the fastball that was 87-90 and touched 91 early in the game. The feel for the breaking ball was inconsistent early on, but he found a feel for it later in the game that got some swings and misses late in counts. It is a strong, durable frame that maintains arm speed on his secondary. The ability to attack the strike zone consistently was encouraging and a big step for him to continue to make long term.

Mills Godwin

Matthew Hartsfield SS / 2B / Mills E Godwin , VA / 2026There aren’t many players that play as hard as Hartsfield does on the diamond. He plays with a fast, high paced motor that can impact the game. He was aggressive offensively and had a multi-hit day. There is strength in the compact, athletic frame, and it shows some impact to the pull side. He uses the whole field and competes when he is in the box. He is fundamentally sound in the infield and shows athleticism by making plays on the run. The feel for the game and the high motor make him an impact player when he is on the field.

Miller
| |
Kason Wagner RHP / 3B / Miller School, VA / 2026It was pure dominance throughout this outing as Wagner continues to put quality starts together for the Mavericks. He set the tone early, establishing the fastball on the inner half. He generated swings and misses and threw all fastballs but two through the first three innings. The fastball has plenty of life and seems to have an extra gear at times at 87-89. He used more secondary on the back half of the game. He is a huge competitor and has a proven track record of winning over his high school career. He is one that you are confident in getting the ball in big games.

Stuarts Draft
|
Brogan Fitzgerald SS / RHP / SDHS, VA / 2029There is some intrigue to what could be in the future for Fitzgerald. It is a good frame with lean strength. He battled through some traffic throughout the outing and made some big pitches to minimize the traffic. He was able to add velocity when he needed to on the fastball. It was a wider range, being up to 86 early and settling in at the 81-84 range. He showed two different breaking balls, with the curveball being used early in the count and the slider being used as the finisher. The arm works and maintains arm speed on the secondary. Getting ahead in counts will be key for him long-term, but there is intrigue to what can come in the future.

Wilson Memorial
| |
Nolan Deaver SS / RHP / Wilson Memorial High, VA / 2028Deaver brought some bounce and energy to the game that is contagious. He showed range and athleticism at shortstop with fundamental actions. He put together competitive at-bats and was scrappy at the dish. He is comfortable with using all parts of the field with line drive tendencies. There is room to add strength for more potential impact, but it is doubles power with strength to the pull side.

|
Frankie Kovac RHP / 3B / Wilson Memorial High, VA / 2029It was a strong outing for Kovac on Thursday. He attacked the strike zone often and made big pitches when they were needed. The fastball was 80-82, attacking the corners, creating weak contact. The slider worked in the low seventies and backed up at times, but the feel got better later in the outing, generating some swing and misses late in counts. He picked up ten strikeouts on the night, only letting up one run and one walk. He showed good poise for a freshman and was confident in getting outs. It is a lanky frame that has more room to add strength at 6-foot-1, 160-pounds. The present pitchability is there with the upside of a velocity increase with the frame.

Woodgrove
| |
Caden Cunningham OF / 2B / Woodgrove High, VA / 2028In multiple looks this spring one thing has remained consistent, and it has been his aggressiveness at the plate. He has been able to create some offense for Woodgrove and be a spark. He is a contact bat that can put together scrappy at-bats and can find his way on base. He did that on Monday with a hit and heads-up base running to get the team on the board. Strength needs to be added to the frame, but the present bat-to-ball skills are impactful.

| |
Braiden Miller 3B / RHP / Woodgrove High, VA / 2029Miller had a double that helped push the Woodgrove offense late in the game. He was aggressive on the first pitch and sent a hard hit double into the right centerfield gap. He brings a physical presence with strength that works from gap to gap. He is aware of the strike zone and attacks pitches on the plate. He was consistent at third base, making plays on the move and showing some above-average arm strength.
