PBKC Super Select In Review

Jimmy Fackelman
PBKC Tournaments Scouting Director

In spite of some wild weather conditions on Friday, over 140 teams came down to PBKC across 9 different states to play what has been some of the best baseball we've seen at PBKC this spring. The Super Select formatting allowed for teams to showcase their best players early and often, while playing under the pressure of each game being a must win further seperating the best of the best. Down below my Super Select Standouts from the weekend along with some analysis on a few players from the list.

2030 C Wyatt Storey (Oklahoma Sandlot)

The well built backstop had himself a nice weekend at the plate logging a knock in every game for the Sandlot hitting in the heart of the order and seeing some of the better arms this weekend had to offer. Storey's production didn't fall off from behind the dish with sound defensive play keeping balls in front. A consistent, steady player on both sides of the ball with a strong foundation for major production with the bat as the frame continues to mature.

2030 1B James Racker (Millard National)

Long levered 6'3, 190 Frame doing damage in the middle of Millard National's lineup all weekend long from the left side. barrel works its way into the zone early while looking to elevate to the pull side and did so with success with multiple XBH to the RCF gap. Racker finished the weekend with an OBP over .600 and showed no signs of slowing down as the arms continued to improve into Sunday. One to keep an eye on as he continues to improve the approach and mature.

2030 OF Creighton Lutt (Prime 27:17 - Black)

Lutt found himself moved up into the heart of the order after a strong weekend at the plate in the KC Showdown and delivered with a hit in all 4 games on the weekend for Prime. LHH that can spray it line to line while playing outstanding defense in the outfield with solid speed and athleticism. If lf Lutt can continue to grow and add speed he will find himself comfortably in the top two of any order for years to come.

2030 RHP Mikey Miller (Cangelosi Sparks)

Simple and repeatable in the delivery out of a 6'3, 170 frame. Easy arm action with plenty of room to add to the FB already topping out at 81 on the gun as of last weekend. Attacked both halves of the zone with the heater while elevating to the swing and miss for punchouts. FB was paired with a solid two plane breaking ball used sparingly en route to 3 shutout innings on the hill racking up 6ks to 0BBs.

2031 UTL Jody Crosby (Wow Factor Oklahoma)

Crosby played up with the 14's this weekend and for good reason reaching in 4/5 games on the weekend including multiple times in 3 of the 5 games. Crosby showed an advanced approach in the box with plenty of patience for pitches he could do damage with and rarely missed on the ones he was presented with. Defensively logging reps in both the infield and corner outfield spots showing off the athleticism. Pairing both of these together will make for an interesting follow over the course of his high school career.

2030 RHP/UTL Carter Hutfles (Millard National)

Hutfles was dominant this weekend in every facet of the game. Commanding presence on the mound with a low pulse for big spots while living in the strike zone with a 4 pitch mix. The pitch ability was evident in all 4 offerings with a fastball that ticked up to 85 on multiple occasions. The featured offspeed was a hammer of a curveball playing both in the zone to start hitters off and off the zone to swing and miss. Hutfles went 4 shutout innings in a start on the hill grabbing 6Ks to only 1BB. At the plate it was just as impressive. LHH with an advanced path with a gap to gap approach and some serious power present. Hutfles finished the weekend 10/12 at the plate with a HR and 2BBs out of the leadoff spot for Millard National. Defensively he showed above average at multiple positions around the diamond including catcher and outfield while never looking out of place. This is a must know name in the state of Kansas.

Tournament Champions

14u D1 Champion

Millard United Elite National - Centeno

Millard United made a statement in their first showing of the year at PBKC winning the championship with relative ease over some very talented opponents from across the central region. The three headed monster of a rotation between Carter Hutfles, Kellan Rozgay, and Drew Beard logged a combined 12 shutout innings with 15Ks to just 2BBs. To follow up the arms who delivered at the dish in their own right a strong top 6 including Hutfles, Rozgay, and Beard as well as Kash Abbot, Trey Devine and James Racker leading an offense that plated 40 runs over the course of 5 games. This is a talented roster that will go as far as they let themselves and we cannot wait to have them back for the Youth World Series at the end of the spring.

14u D1 Finalist

NE Prospects West

The prospects made their way into the championship this weekend on an engine room of hitters primed to do damage and doing so often. Eli White, Dedrick Gorecki, Kallen Rader, Cooper Johnson and Becken Wennekamp wreaked havoc on opposing arms all weekend and with a true number one arm in Gregg Smith this team is primed to be a force all spring long.

14u D2 Champion

Engaged Athletics - Black

Engaged Athletics - Black squad redeemed themselves in a championship loss the weekend before in come back fashion in both the semi final and championship games to claim their first title of the spring. Engaged played their brand of clean team baseball in order to bring home a trophy this weekend with each and every player on the roster making a contribution at the plate at one point or another en route to the 4-0 showing.

14u D2 Finalist

Building Champions - Hisky

Building Champions - Hisky got their main players going and it directly coorelated to wins on the weekend on their way to their first championship game showing of the spring. Big contributions from names like Carter Duvall, Jacob Holleran and Brody Thomas were a big reason for making their way into the championship on Sunday. If this team can continue to gel and put good at bats together as a unit there is no doubt that BC - Hisky will continue to find their way deep into weekends.
