The Prep Baseball Virginia/DC staff makes their way across the Commonwealth and DC throughout the spring to assist high school players in gathering evaluations, including video and some data, that allow our staff to assist in the potential recruitment of student-athletes.
With the staggering start of private and public schools, we have a deeper collection of notes and video on players in this edition of the Ground Forces Scout Blog.

Cave Spring

Evan Lee OF / Cave Spring, VA / 2027Continues to produce for the Knights and showcase the plus hit tool. Was on barrel all day and dominated in early counts. Had a 3-4 day at the plate with a single and two doubles that would bring in three runs. Power to both sides of the field with the single being pulled hard into RF and the two doubles on a line back side into left field. Gets out of the box well with an aggressive feel on the bases. An energizer and a consistent one at the top of the lineup for the Knights.

Sam Urgo C / 3B / CAVE SPRING HIGH, VA / 2027Had a good day at the plate with multiple barreled balls, two singles, and a two-RBI double. Swing has line-drive tendencies with gap-to-gap feel.

Franklin County

Alexander Crowl RHP / 3B / Franklin County High, VA / 2027Was on barrel throughout the game with a strong showing. Consecutive home runs to the pull side totaling 7 RBI’s, which would set the Eagles’ tone and the lead for the rest of the game.

Hickory

Keegan Kerr RHP / OF / Hickory High School, VA / 2028It was a strong performance on the mound. The fastball was 85-88 from a loose arm action. He overpowered hitters with the fastball and could grab 87-88 whenever he wanted. He showed a quality secondary mix to mostly left-handed hitters at both 75 on the changeup and curveball. There is room to add strength in his lanky 6’3” frame.

Highland

Wright Broadhead OF / 3B / Highland School, VA / 2028Strong physical frame but maintains his athleticism and quickness defensively and on the bases. Has a ton of strength at contact and a good firm lower half at contact point as well. The swing sets up to pull, and he shows a lot of raw power that way. The home run that he hit in the game was absolutely smashed. The other hit was also extremely well struck, just had a lower launch angle. While he sets up well to pull, he has shown the ability to drive the ball to other fields in the past as well.

Matthew McCauley LHP / Highland , VA / 2026Athletic frame with a lot of good strength present, especially in the lower half. Classical lefty crossfire delivery with shoulders closed off as he strides out, hides the ball, and creates deception. Short loose arm action from a very low three-quarters slot has some late intent. Fastball was 85-88, with a lot of 88s early, gets some late life, especially when down in the zone where he gets two-plane action. Slider had good arm speed and was 74-76 with 2/8 break to it. Also started showing a change around 80 later in the outing.

McLean

Carter Jones RHP / OF / Mclean High, VA / 2028The sophomore tallied two singles and an RBI on Wednesday. Jones has shown his power to the pull side in front of our staff this spring, with a hard-hit liner into left field on Wednesday. Jones has an upright swing from his strong 6’1”, 200-lb frame and has continued to show impact with his bat.

JW Riggins OF / LHP / McLean High School, VA / 2026The Prep Baseball Senior Future Games alum and Georgetown commit had a dominant night on Wednesday, with impressive performances both on the mound and at the plate. On the mound, Riggins worked 4IP, allowing 1ER and striking out 10. Riggins racked up 19 whiffs, with opposing batters struggling to make contact against three of his pitches. The fastball worked up to 87, blowing by hitters when used in contrast to his breaking balls. His sweeping slider in the mid 70's and curveball in the high 60's constantly kept hitters off balance. Riggins worked from the stretch with a quick arm from his athletic frame. At the plate, Riggins had a great day, tallying two triples. His first was a rocket to right center field on an off-speed pitch low in the zone. Riggins let his barrel get through the zone and showed off his speed with a quick trip to third. His second triple was unconventional, with the left fielder misplaying a line drive into left field off Riggins’ bat, but nonetheless Riggins showed his impressive speed to slide into third. Riggins has a simple load into a smooth swing, with a hit tool that has been showcased repeatedly in front of our staff.

Reid Turner SS / 2B / McLean, VA / 2026The Shenandoah commit had a good day on Wednesday, going 3 for 5 with a double, RBI, and stolen base. Turner showed impact to the pull side in this one, with a double and a single both hit hard to left field. He also added another single up the middle. Turner also showed his athleticism and position versatility on Wednesday night, manning shortstop and stealing a base while he’s handled the catching duties in past contests.

Washington-Liberty

Reid Schwartz OF / RHP / Washington-Liberty High, VA / 2027Schwartz led the W&L offense, reaching base in all four of his at-bats with two singles. Schwartz had a left-center approach in this one, as he drilled a single into left field in the third and tallied another single into center field in the seventh. He worked with a quick bat and showed patience at the plate.
|

Hank Thomson 3B / RHP / Washington Liberty High, VA / 2026Thomson, the Rhode Island College commit, competed on the mound on Wednesday. While he was met with adversity from the McLean offense, he was able to settle in to not allow another run after the first inning. Thomson worked his fastball in the mid 80s, landing it multiple times on the outside part of the plate for strikes. Thomson also mixed in his changeup and slider, getting some weak contact and five punchouts. He has a lengthy 6’3”, 185-lb frame that goes to work well down the mound.
