Flint Hill 6, Potomac School 4

Game 2 of this week’s MAC series got off to a quick start as the Panthers scored 3 in the top of the first with ‘28 Wyatt Overman opening the scoring with an RBI single. Sophomore Bryce Henry entered the game in the second for the Huskies and calmed things down. Flint Hill cut into the deficit with a Brennan Lublin RBI double in the third, but Potomac would respond with senior Ian Parish’s second double of the game in the fourth, making the score 4-1. Henry would become the story of the game as he shut Potomac School down aside from that run and played a big part in Flint Hill’s comeback, delivering the hit that tied the game in the fifth. Jefferson Speakes would drive in the go-ahead run in the sixth as Flint Hill rallied to a 6-4 win, with Henry tossing 6 innings of 5-hit, 1-run ball, while going 2-3 with 2 RBI.

Centreville 6, #18 Oakton 4

The Concord District opener for both teams was a showdown between two of the contenders for the District Championship. Both teams started lefties, with senior Michael Gambone (Appalachian State) going for Centreville and junior Logan Thompson going for Oakton. Thompson was outstanding over the first 3 innings and Oakton built a 4-0 lead, with Noah Ramirez (Waynesburg) delivering a big 2-RBI double in the third. Then Centreville began to chip away, cutting the deficit to 4-2 going into the seventh. Down to their last strike, Gambone ripped a line drive past first base to tie the game and send it to extra innings, where a Caysen Chadha (Denison) leadoff double would key a 2-run eighth and a comeback win for Centreville. Senior Caleb Bang (Grove City) was stellar in relief and picked up the win with 5 scoreless innings and just 2 hits allowed.

Riverbend 6, Forest Park 1

Riverbend took control of this one in the first inning and didn’t look back. Joshua King and Thomas Wingfield contributed to the three runs that they put up in the first inning. Eli Jones gave Riverbend a quality start on the mound working into the sixth inning. Ethan Clarke came in for relief and closed things out for the Bears.

#3 Frank Cox 9, Gainesville 2

The Falcons from Cox HS made the spring break trip up to Gainesville to take on the Cardinals. The theme of the night was pressure. Cox applied pressure virtually every inning, especially the 2nd through the 5th. The Falcons put up a crooked number for four straight innings, and it all started with a Santiago Gomez (EMU) homer in the second. While there were a few well struck balls on the night, it was small ball, walks, errors, and simply Cox’s ability to capitalize at the right time. In addition to the clutch hitting from the Falcons, there were some big pitches made by Cox starter MJ Lemke (Richmond) that kept Gainesville at a distance. The defending Class 6 champions had multiple runners in scoring position multiple times, but were seemingly never able to cash in, especially in terms of managing a big inning. Lemke threw six innings, scattered five hits, allowed one earned run, and struck out seven. Ethan Rayno was the only player that had multiple hits on the night, while the rest of the Cox team had four other players cash in extra base hits.

#15 Independence 13, #10 Battlefield 10

The first Cedar Run District showdown between newly-Class 6 Independence and Battlefield was a wild back-and-forth affair. Both teams scored single runs in the first inning and then traded the lead in the middle of the game with matching 6-run innings as Indy took a 10-7 lead. Battlefield closed it 11-10 after five before Independence tacked on two more in the sixth and hung on to win. Aidan Spagna (Boston College) had a massive day for Indy, going 3-4 with a home run, 5 RBI, and missing the cycle by a triple. Logan Havekost also had 3 hits and 3 RBI and Colton Hicks (Gardner-Webb) had 2 hits and tossed the last four innings to close out the game. For Battlefield, Teagan Leach (Virginia Tech) and Yogi Colangelo (Virginia Tech) each had 3-hit games.

Hanover 2, King George 0

This was a close game through the end as both pitchers did a good job of slowing down the offenses. Eli Truslow (Richard Bland) turned in a quality start for King George and held the Hanover offense down for most of the game. Brayden Shreffler was dominant and led Hanover with seven shutout innings on the mound. Carter Alvis, Grayson Reece (Hagerstown CC), and Dominic Webb helped lead the Hanover offense to the win.

#20 Glen Allen 12, Deep Run 6

It was all Glen Allen early, outscoring the Wildcats 8-0 through the first four innings. Glen Allen would sit on that lead until the seventh when they extended it to 12-0. Deep Run would make a push in the bottom half, scoring six runs off of a Jaguars’ reliever, but it was too little too late. A standout performance from Daniel Nienaber (Mississippi State) on the mound gave Glen Allen a big leg up. Nienaber threw five innings of no-hit baseball, striking out eight along the way. He added to his productivity with a solo homerun in the middle innings. Joining the staff ace in big days were Cooper McPherson and Colby Seay (Hampden-Sydney). McPherson was 3-4 with two RBI and Seay hit a three run homerun in the fourth. Jacob Saunders was the only multi-hit player for Deep Run, going 2-3 on the night with three RBI.

#5 Bishop O'Connell 8, #23 Gonzaga 5

Gonzaga scored first after a flurry of offense in the top of the first, but Bishop O’Connell would score the next six runs, coming in the 4th and 5th innings. Tyler Majkowski was very strong early on for Gonzaga, but a long fourth would chase him from the mound. Robert Kilpatrick allowed seven hits, mostly all to the top of the order, but was able to limit any big innings and had a strong all around performance before handing it over to Shota Fogus (Richmond). Outside of a swing or two, Fogus overpowered hitters for an extended short relief appearance. He struck out seven in 2.2 innings of work. The biggest offensive day came from DJO’s Bryant James (UVA). James had three hits, two runs, two RBI, and one stolen base, as well as made countless plays at shortstop. The Knights move to 13-3 and take the win in a big WCAC matchup.
