Throughout the VA/DC high school season, our staff travels far and wide to identify the best players in the Commonwealth. In additon to that, our staff delivers evaluations and video to assist players in their recruiting process. Every week our staff members provide notes and video in an assortment of scout blogs. Jason Burton, the Virginia/DC Scout Director, will be delivering his weekly scout blog on some of the players he saw during his travels.

In week two, we take a look at six teams from Virginia/DC. Included in these six team writeups are nearly twenty players that stood out during games in the past week.

Atlee

Chase Blumberg RHP / Atlee, VA / 2026

One of the better command arms you will see at the high school level. Blumberg was outstanding during his complete game outing vs Glen Allen. More of an early count out guy, pitch to contact, and force the pressure on the offense. This is an arm that will not "lose games", he will keep his teams in games and give them a chance to win every night. The first three innings he worked in the 86-88 range and would touch an occasional 89. Used the breaking ball effectively and can start and finish counts with it, but it was certainly the fastball that dominated the night.

Glen Allen

Daniel Nienaber RHP / 1B / Glen Allen , VA / 2026

Is quickly becoming the most intriguing draft follow arm in the state. Worked into the fourth inning and showed excellent feel for the strike zone with his two breaking balls. Was mostly 91-92 through his first three innings and was more 89-91 in the fourth. Threw 65% strikes during this outing and showed some of his starter upside.

Great Bridge

Cole Cinnamond LHP / 1B / Great Bridge High, VA / 2027

Added strength and remains functional, if not an even better mover on the mound. Arm action is still a little longer on the backside, but showed the ability to get the breaking ball out front and showed feel for the 77-81 mph slider. Threw an really high rate of strikes with the slider. Most of his swings and misses were on the fastball. Velo through the first three innings worked 89-92 and touched 93 in the first. The 4th through the 6th, the velo tended to be more in the 85-89 range and would touch 90-91. The slider felt like more of a chase and expand pitch when he got ahead with the fastball. He did show two changeups, both at 81 mph. While he did hit two batters on left/left matchups, he did not have any four ball walks. 11 strikeouts and was in complete control all night. Clemson commit.

Shaun Brody Comparto 2B / RHP / Great Bridge High, VA / 2026

Came on to close it out. He was either in the zone, or uncompetitive with the misses. Tended to open up a little quick at times and get rotational working across himself. Was best when he rode closed down the mound and stayed on line longer. Mostly fastballs with a lot of 89-90 in a small sample, and touched 91 once. More 1:1 K/BB rate with the fastball and did throw a few upper 70's sliders at the end of the 7th. Seemed to stay on the slider a bit longer, which could be the reset for the fastball when he loses feel. Showed some significant runback on the fastball and if he can create that to the gloveside, it is a tough pitch to cover.

Casey Cuddyer SS / 3B / Great Bridge High, VA / 2026

First look at the North Carolina commit this spring, but not much has changed. Still controls the zone as well as any hitter in the state, still displays high bat to ball skills, and baseball instincts. Got behind in his first at bat on two called strikes, and then turned around a 91 mph fastball for a double. His next two at bats he was early count swinging, lining out to right field and then reaching via an error on the shortstop. Did not have any action at short on the night.

Andrew Griffin OF / 2B / Great Bridge High, VA / 2026

Biggest swing of the night came from the Norfolk State commit. Griffin has been a staple in the Great Bridge lineup for years and an uptick in impact could be a big part in replacing some lost offense from last year's roster. Griffin has always shown athleticism and versatility in his game, but looks to have added some batspeed and ability to really get the barrel turned, as displayed on Friday night.

Brandon Han SS / 2B / Great Bridge High, VA / 2028

Really impressed with the approach and how he controlled counts. Small sample size, but versus a quality arm, Han showed barrel feel and the ability to manage at bats. Was definitely a more mature approach than what you see from most sophomores starting in their first "meaningful" varsity game. Had two hits on the night and a sac fly. Will continue to follow and get a better read on the long term upside, as well as where the positional fit may be.

Maury

Landen Hall 2B / RHP / Maury High, VA / 2026

Quite possibly the best remaining uncommitted arm in the senior class. Was up to 91 mph early on and sat mostly in the 87-90 range for the first two innings. The effort has dialed back a little bit, creating some more consistency in the results on the mound. He is a competitor and attacks hitters without fear. The slider also showed some improvement in shape and feel, while the split/changeup had real out pitch potential. Usage was certainly fastball first, but both secondary pitches showed upside to be out pitches that the next level. Not sure if it was a split or hard changeup, but it paired well with the fastball and late diving action. Strong outing for Hall.

Walsingham

Anthony Ferrie C / OF / Walsingham Academy, VA / 2026

Had two hits on the night, but nothing bigger than the two out, two RBI single in the top of the sixth. That single tied the game up and gave the Trojans a chance at a Power 25 win over Western Branch. Ferrie is a Methodist commit.

Edward Holstrom 3B / 1B / Walsingham Academy, VA / 2028

Chandler Howlett SS / 2B / Walsingham Academy, VA / 2027

Corey Overmeyer 1B / RHP / Walsingham Academy, VA / 2026

Luke Rains OF / RHP / Walsingham Academy, VA / 2028

Short arm action, lower effort mechanics, and upright delivery and maintains that higher set throughout the delivery. Was up to 82 and effectively used a upper 60's breaking ball to keep hitters off the fastball. The breaking ball stayed down in the zone gave Western Branch hitters a hard time. The fastball might have played a tick better due to his breaking ball usage and the bigger velo split between the two pitches.

Western Branch

Frankie Juguilon SS / 3B / Western Branch High, VA / 2028

Max McEwen 1B / 3B / Western Branch High, VA / 2026

He just hits, plain and simple. Short whippy barrel, feel to hit, and uses the backside of the field well. Doubled to right center in the first and then had a big double to deep right field in the eight inning. Strong hands and wrists with impact off the bat. Strong frame that is more durable in physical makeup. Apprentice School commit.

Markel Smith SS / 2B / Western Branch High, VA / 2026

When you show up to a Western Branch game, Smith is the first one that stands out. Just looks the part. Long and lean frame, pretty easy mover, and athletic. Square stance at the plate with a little toe tap to stride. Normal length to the swing path and more line drives and doubles type of hitter. Rangy defender that moves well laterally.

Ian Taylor RHP / 3B / Western Branch High, VA / 2027

Strong outing early in the season for Taylor. Worked deep into the game and had some improved control. The control faded as he showed some fatigue later in the game, but the velo held, still ticking 86's in the 6th inning. The breaking ball velo was fine, but I felt like it showed more like a finish/chase pitch, than an early count strike pitch. In the first inning the breaking ball backed up on him and was a little pushy, but Taylor did a nice adjusting in the second and got it out front, showing more finish to the pitch. Was not quite curveball, but bigger shape for a slider, probably more slurve in terms of how it played. Really nice hand speed on the breaking ball that he did a better job displaying as he got into the outing. Deeper arm swing and works from a three-quarter arm slot with normal to slightly above effort.

Wilson Tone 2B / RHP / WESTERN BRANCH HIGH, VA / 2026

A couple of big moments for the senior, including a runner caught stealing, 2.1 innings of scoreless work on the mound, and capping his night off with a walk-off single. Tone just seemed to show up in the biggest spots and delivered when it meant the most.

Ryan Waddell SS / RHP / Western Branch High, VA / 2028

Carter Walter OF / 1B / Western Branch High, VA / 2027

More compact frame with strength added throughout. Medium lift to stride and a flatter path through the zone. Did a nice job matching plane and creating some natural loft and backspin off the bat. Was on barrel multiple times, especially to the pull side gap where he had a homerun in the first and then another hard hit ball to left center in the third. While it was not overpowering stuff he was facing, he showed some barrel feel and ability to produce some impactful offense in game.
