Nevada - With the 2026 high school season officially underway, it’s time to recognize the standout performances that helped set the tone across the Silver State in the Opening Week.

Each week this spring, we will name an Nevada Player of the Week and Nevada Pitcher of the Week, honoring the top individual performances from around the state. These awards are based entirely on nominations submitted by high school coaches, highlighting the athletes who delivered when it mattered most during game action.

From dominant outings on the mound to explosive performances at the plate, Week 3 brought no shortage of impact performances. Now, it’s time to spotlight Week 3 honorees of the 2026 season.

 

Player of the Week Spotlight: Andruw Giles

Basic Academy senior Andruw Giles turned in a massive performance this past week, serving as the offensive heartbeat for the Wolves during the prestigious Boras Classic. Giles was a model of consistency and power, highlighted by an electric outing on March 20th against Riverton, where he went 3-for-5 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Over the four-game stretch, Giles tallied nine total hits and showcased his ability to drive the ball into the gaps against high-level pitching from Arizona and Colorado, effectively cementing his place as a top-tier run producer in Nevada's Class 5A.

Beyond his power, Giles’ discipline and versatility have been on full display. He consistently reached base in every contest this week, including a 2-for-4 performance with a double against Millennium and a 2-for-3 showing against Hamilton. His ability to impact the game with his legs—recording a stolen base against Millennium—combined with his defensive reliability in center field, has made him an indispensable asset for the Wolves as they navigate a challenging spring schedule.

Pitcher of the Week Spotlight: Nathan Mayorga

Sierra Vista’s Nathan Mayorga etched his name into the record books on March 18th, delivering a flawless performance in a 9-0 victory over Moapa Valley. Mayorga was the definition of efficiency and dominance, retiring all 21 batters he faced for a 7-inning perfect game. He needed only 72 pitches (52 strikes) to handle the Pirates' lineup, racking up 7 strikeouts and allowing zero baserunners. It was a masterclass in command and poise, as Mayorga didn't reach a single three-ball count against any of the 21 batters faced.

Outside of one outlier appearance, he has been nearly unhittable, highlighted by a 7-inning, 11-strikeout gem against Carson earlier this month. With two complete-game shutouts already on his resume this season, Mayorga has established himself as one of the premier arms in Nevada, consistently leading the Mountain Lions to victory with a combination of high-velocity strikes and devastating off-speed pitches.
