South Milwaukee Preseason ID: Underclass Quick Hits

On March 8th, Prep Baseball Wisconsin team hosted its latest event along the 2026 winter showcase circuit, the annual South Milwaukee Preseason ID took place at Hitters Baseball Academy in Caledonia, WI. Around 120 players made it out to this event, providing us with updated looks and a new list of prospects to follow in an area of Wisconsin that regularly produces some of the state’s top talent.
Today, we’ll be highlighting the 2028 and 2029 players who stood out in Caledonia within this Quick Hits piece. Stay tuned throughout the week as we continue to break down the in-depth metrics measured at this event, with the help of our tech partners TrackMan, Blast Motion, Swift, and Vizual Edge.

+ SS Maddex Welzien (West Bend West, 2028): Standing in at 5-foot-11, 167.1-pound frame, the infielder carries an athletic build to the diamond and is likely going to add significant size and strength in the future. The right-handed hitter maintains balance through contact and balanced finish and quiet head. Efficient and well-sequenced with a downhill path that leverages the baseball out front, overall hitterish look. The impact ticked up generating a 95 mph max EV and a 90.9 mph average EV. Tied the 2028 class best with a 7.02-second 60-yard dash, in the dirt he displayed soft hands and clean double-play turns during his defensive workout. Throws across the infield were measured at 85 mph and the level of skill with the glove and on defense makes Welzien a complete player on both sides of the ball.

The right-handed hitter starts with a centered and controlled move, hitterish, with feel to repeat in rhythm, deploying a downhill bat path that consistently hammers the baseball to all fields. He produced a max EV of 91 mph and an average EV of 81.7 mph. He proved to be an explosive athlete for his age, recording a 7.06 in the 60-yard dash while tying the 2029 class-best mark with a peak jump of 26.2 inches. + OF Camden Jeske (Oak Creek, 2028): The 6-foot-0, 161.6-pound prospect presents an athletic frame with plenty of room to physically mature. The left-handed hitter operates with a hitterish feel and a loose, fluid stroke that is short, fast, and direct to the zone, allowing him to drive the ball with authority to all fields. He produced a max EV of 92 mph alongside an average EV of 89.1 mph. Defensively, he showcased quality footwork on approach to gather the baseball with a clean transfer to his throwing hand. Delivering from a longer arm action and a three-quarter slot, throws home topped 81 mph with a quick arm indicating there will be more throwing velocity once he matures physically.

+ MIF Tate Hagen (Lake Country Lutheran, 2028): The 5-foot-11, 158-pound prospect presents an athletic, twitchy frame with a projectable build. The right-handed hitter utilizes his lower half effectively, working with a short and compact path that stays behind the baseball to produce hard line-drive contact. He recorded a whopping max EV of 97 mph alongside an average EV of 93.3 mph, which led the entire 2028 class at the event. He was consistently on the barrel and was making impressive contact throughout his round. A quick mover with soft hands and quality range to either side, his throws across the infield were measured at 85 mph which shows plenty of arm strength to stick on the left side with likely more coming. Rounding out his profile, Hagen ran a 7.10 in the 60-yard dash and posted a class-best peak jump height of 27.2 inches. Hagen is highly skilled with an impressive toolset and our staff is looking forward to follow this coming spring.

+ MIF Jadyel Colome (Martin Luther, 2028): Colome features an athletic 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame. The right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open, balanced setup and utilizes a fluid, downhill path to consistently drive the baseball to all fields. Showing a quality feel for the barrel throughout his round, he generated a max EV close to 90 mph. Feel for the barrel is evident to this swing profile and as he gets stronger, the exit velocities will improve. On the dirt in what was perhaps one of the top rounds of defense our staff has seen this winter, the infielder plays light on his feet with an athletic gather and a quick transfer through a three-quarter slot to deliver quality throws through the target consistently.

+ MIF Brock Taske (Oak Creek High School, 2029): Listed at a compact 5-foot-7, 145 pounds, the middle infielder presents an intriguing developmental profile. The right-handed hitter hits with a balanced and stable base, showing a clear feel for the barrel while consistently hitting hard line drives throughout his round. His offensive output included a max EV in the upper 80s and an average EV of 82.3 mph, proving that he was consistently on the barrel. Defensively, Taske is an easy mover who works cleanly around the ball with soft and reliable hands. Throws across the infield were accurate and true through the target. Taske feels like a reliable middle infield defender presently and in the future.

+ 3B/OF Max Egan (Whitefish Bay, 2028): Standing at a projectable 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Egan possesses a physical frame with ample room for continued development. The right-handed hitter has a rhythmic and repeatable load getting to a strong launch position consistently. He uses his lower half to leverage the baseball out front and produce consistent barrel contact through the zone. His metrics highlight a considerable offensive ceiling, as he recorded a max EV of 94 mph and an average EV of 83.8 mph. Registering a max EV of 94 mph as a 2028 graduate is impressive and will continue to improve as he continues to add strength. Egan is without a doubt a high-upside follow going forward.
+ SS/C Yanni Douros (Shorewood, 2028): Douros presents a sturdy 5-foot-8, 164.5-pound frame. The right-handed hitter utilizes a simple setup with a quiet trigger to produce a flat swing that is short, fast, and direct to the zone while leveraging the ball out front. Douros generated an 86.3 mph average EV and a 93 mph max EV from an explosive move through the ball. Douros started his workout by running a quick 7.06 in the 60-yard dash with quick burst off the line. Showcasing versatility defensively, throws across the infield were accurate with carry through the target. Behind the plate, he’s quick to turn the ball around to second base and his hands showed softness and impressive feel for the pocket.
+ C/OF Jake Barth (Oak Creek, 2029): At a sturdy 5-foot-6, 167 pounds, Barth presented an intriguing profile during his workout. The right-handed hitter utilizes a downhill path that is short, fast, and direct to the zone, leveraging the baseball out front to consistently smash balls through the big part of the field. He generated an impressive max EV number for his class at 92 mph max EV and an 87.4 mph average EV, showcasing raw power that is impressive for a 2029 prospect. A 7.24 runner in the 60-yard dash, he showcased quick burst off the line and should continue to improve on that number as he gains more strength and explosiveness in his lower half.
+ C/RHP Reece Kelly (Greendale, 2028): Kelly presents an athletic, projectable 5-foot-10, 156-pound frame. The right-handed hitter utilizes a simple, repeatable trigger to launch a downhill path that is short, fast, and direct to the zone, allowing him to consistently hammer baseballs into both gaps with backspin. He produced an impressive max EV of 94 mph alongside an average EV of 86.3 mph, showcasing raw power that is well beyond his years for a freshman. Defensively, he impressed with his ability to turn the baseball around quickly and accurately on throws down to second base. His throws were measured at 78 mph, with pop times in the 1.97-2.07 range. During bullpen work, Kelly displayed feel for the catching position with solid presence behind the plate and soft hands, consistently finding the pocket on pitches that were delivered to him.
+ INF Levi Hanel (Oak Creek, 2028): Hanel features a long, wiry, and highly projectable 5-foot-11, 135-pound frame. The right-handed hitter sequences his swing exceptionally well, utilizing the ground to produce a tight hand path and advanced barrel feel that consistently drives balls through both gaps. Hanel’s metric will most certainly tick way up as he adds to his frame. Defensively, he impressed by showcasing soft hands, clean actions, fluid actions and a confident demeanor with the glove. He displayed the ability to throw from multiple angles with carry and accuracy. Hanel most certainly will be able to stick on the dirt.
+ C/OF Jeffrey Stefanich (Random Lake, 2028): Standing at a projectable 6-foot-1, 171-pound frame, Stefanich offers an intriguing dual-position defensive profile. The right-handed hitter utilizes a balanced, simple setup before deploying an efficient, downhill path that allows him to consistently line the baseball to all fields. Generating hard contact, he recorded a max EV of 90 mph and an average EV of 83.3 mph which were both solid marks for the class and will certainly tick up as he continues to add strength. Defensively in the outfield, he flashed clean actions aggressively attacking the baseball, and throws home showed carry and accuracy. Behind the plate, he showcased soft hands with quick transfers and the ability to keep the ball close on blocks.
+ INF Owen Zeller (Indian Trail High School & Academy, 2028): Zeller presents a solid 6-foot-0, 174.2-pound frame with more projection coming. The right-handed hitter operates from an upright, open setup and gets to a strong launch position on time to deliver a flat path that stays through the baseball, consistently producing hard line-drive contact to the middle of the field. Defensively, the infielder works with a natural feel and athleticism around the ball with steady and soft hands and a reliable two-hand gather. Throws across the infield were on point and true through the target from a loose and free arm stroke.
+ 1B Caleb Scheel (Mukwonago, 2028): Scheel brings a physical presence to the diamond, standing at a strong and athletic 6-foot-2, 180 pounds. The right-handed hitter utilizes a wide, balanced setup with impressive rhythm to generate a downhill swing path, demonstrating innate barrel feel as he consistently works the big part of the field. His raw power was on display during hitting with a 91 mph max EV and an 85.6 mph average EV. Defensively, he works well from the ground up and fields the ball cleanly out front. Throws across the infield were measured at 70 mph and showed quality accuracy and carry through the target.

The right-handed hitter utilizes an efficient, leveraged path out front to consistently hammer baseballs with authority to all fields. Showcasing raw power that stands out among his peers, the right-handed hitter led the 2028 class with a 101 mph max EV and an 89.7 mph average EV, pairing a 73.0 mph average bat speed with 13.0 g of rotational acceleration. On the mound, he works with a high leg kick and fluid, aggressive downhill mechanics from a repeatable high 3/4 slot, producing a vertical fastball profile sitting at 83-86 mph (2,250 rpm) with 22.6 inches of average induced vertical break, while his curveball played at 65-70 mph (1,986 rpm) with -8.0 inches of horizontal movement. He also flashed a 68-70 mph (1,748 rpm) changeup that featured 18.4 inches of horizontal movement with gradual fade to find the bottom of the zone.

Defensively, he moves well around the bag with clean actions and quality overall feel for the first base position.
