Throughout the VA/DC high school season, our staff travels far and wide to identify the best players in the Commonwealth. In additon to that, our staff delivers evaluations and video to assist players in their recruiting process. Every week our staff members provide notes and video in an assortment of scout blogs. Cape Henry
| |
Colt Bradshaw SS / 2B / Cape Henry Collegiate School, VA / 2027Bradshaw’s presence was impactful, and it led to a big win on Thursday night. He was 3-4 on the night, including a double later in the game. It is a compact frame with physical strength present to the pull side. He was creating havoc on the basepaths, swiping a bag and being instinctive by taking the extra base when needed. Defensively he was making plays up the middle and being an active defender. Long term it is a second base profile, but he has the athleticism and the bounce in the infield that can make plays anywhere in the dirt.

| |
Grayson Friske 3B / SS / Cape Henry Collegiate School, VA / 2027Friske was a contributor to the offense, picking up a hit later in the game to bring in a run. He has added lean strength to the frame, and the increased bat speed is noticeable. It is a gap-to-gap approach with extra base impact to those gaps. He has some position versatility in being able to defend at the corner outfield position as well as being a serviceable infielder when needed. It is more of an offensive profile that has some impact potential.

Noah Hummel LHP / 1B / CAPE HENRY COLLEGIATE SCHOOL, VA / 2026It was pure dominance out of the bullpen for Hummel. He pitched with some grit and edge that just plays to his advantage when he is on the mound. He got ahead in counts with the fastball at 85-88 that worked to the arm side. The changeup is a plus pitch that works in the upper seventies that was the finisher late in counts. He shows plenty of confidence in that pitch and could land it for strikes whenever he wanted.

Dominion
| |
Jaden Beyer OF / OF / Dominion High, VA / 2026Beyer made his presence felt early as he took the second pitch that he saw and sent it out of left field for a solo homerun to lead off the top of the first for Dominion. He can be instant offense at the top of the order with the ability to impact the baseball and the speed that he brings to the basepaths. His ability to get on base is key for this offense to have success.

First Colonial
| |
Matthew Miller SS / 3B / First Colonial High, VA / 2027There is plenty of bounce and energy that Miller brings to the field, especially in the infield. He showed some lateral quickness in the infield and made some plays on the move. It is more of a second base profile long-term, but he has the instincts and pace to make plays in the dirt. He also picked up a hit in the game for a single. It is more of a flatter path that works from the middle of the field to the pull side. It is a compact frame that has strength to the pull side. It isn’t a power bat but could run into some extra base hits with the strength in the frame.

| |
James Strange SS / RHP / First Colonial High, VA / 2028It was an intriguing look on a cold day out of the bullpen for Strange. He attacked the corners early in the count with the fastball that was up to 88 and settled in the 84-87 range. The mid-seventies slider has some late bite and depth that gained a few swing and misses late in counts. It is a smaller, wiry frame at 5-foot-8, 140-pounds, but it is a quick arm that has plenty of room to add weight and have an increase in velocity.
|
Hickory
| |
Keegan Kerr RHP / OF / Hickory High School, VA / 2028It was an intriguing look out of the bullpen for Kerr on Friday night. He struck out four hitters in a little over two innings of work. He established the fastball early that was up to 88, sitting in the 85-87 range. The changeup was the best secondary pitch of the night that had some late depth at 78-81. He did show a slider that had good shape, but he wasn’t able to land it for strikes. It is a long, wiry frame that could hold some weight as he matures. Those are some intangibles that will make him an interesting follow throughout the spring.
|
Kellam
| |
Mason Hanly OF / OF / Floyd E Kellam High School, VA / 2027It was some early offense that was provided by Hanly in the first with a three-run home run. It is lean strength in the athletic frame that has some evident impact in the bat. It is a higher hands setup with minimal movement that can turn the barrel for extra bases.
|
|
Garrett Simon LHP / 1B / Kellam, VA / 2026It was a quality start to get the year started with five innings, only surrendering two hits and picking up six strikeouts. The fastball and changeup combo was effective throughout the outing, keeping the opposing lineup guessing. The fastball worked in the 81-84 range to the corners. The changeup was 73-74 and had late tumbling action and depth. As he got deeper into the outing, it was a higher usage of the curveball that had some success low in the zone.

Ocean Lakes
| |
Tre Hamilton OF / OF / Ocean Lakes, VA / 2026It was a two hit night for Hamilton with a single and a double as a contributor at the top of the order for the Dolphins. There is lean strength in the athletic frame that can impact the baseball gap to gap. He is a pure athlete, which allows him to play different positions on the diamond. He got the start at third base, and he was serviceable, making plays at the hot corner. Long term, he has the athleticism to be a plus defender in the outfield with the above-average foot speed and arm strength.
|
| |
Aiden Skalski LHP / LHP / Ocean Lakes High, VA / 2028Skalski did typical Skalski things on Friday night, and that is just competing and knowing how to pitch. There was some minor traffic early in the outing, and he gave up his only run in the first inning. He locked in for six scoreless after the first inning and located his pitches. He showed three pitches, but the fastball and changeup combination kept the opposing offense guessing all night. There is an advanced feel for the changeup, as he has confidence to land it in any count. While the velocity may be light, he still has the ability to miss bats and give his team a chance to win.
|
Stone Bridge
| |
Matthew Belger RHP / Stone Bridge High, VA / 2026It was a dominating outing on a cold night to open up the season for Belger. He threw four quality innings, only letting up one hit and one run to the first hitter he faced. He maneuvered his way through the lineup, picking up nine strikeouts on the night. While the velocity was a tick down on a cold night, he still managed to have success in the zone with the fastball at 85-88. The slider was effective as usual in the mid-seventies, generating swing and misses late in counts as well as getting ahead in counts. The changeup wasn’t needed while he dominated with the fastball and slider combination, but when it was flashed, it showed some late tumbling action that can be another effective pitch in the arsenal. With his ability to attack the strike zone with multiple pitches, it can be hard for opposing hitters to get in a groove and make quality contact on his pitches.
|
| |
Nicholas Rock OF / SS / Stone Bridge High, VA / 2026It was a two hit night, as he displayed his usual bat-to-ball skills that can be effective at the top of the lineup for Stone Bridge. He can bring a patient approach as a tablesetter as well as an aggressive mindset that can create some offense for the lineup. It is a line-to-line approach, as he can use all parts of the field, as well as open it up a bit for some impact to the pull side at times. The athleticism and versatility provides value, as he can impact a lineup with his skillset.
