2026 Spring Team Preview: Boston English (MA)

BOSTON - Boston English has captured three consecutive Boston City League championships to go along with two straight appearances in the state finals, winning it all in 2024. As the 2026 season approaches, head coach Christian Ortiz has the Eagles ready for more success.

“Mental and physical toughness, playing fundamental baseball,” Ortiz said when asked what the program is known for in his time at the school.

There have been 14 college commits since his arrival at Boston English in 2022, but one of those is gone from last year’s 22-6 team that lost in the D5 state finals - Armanis Romero, the league Player of the Year who had more than 100 career hits at the school. Romero is now at Stonehill College and will be missed along with Manny De Jesus, another key loss from a year ago. However, the cupboard is far from bare at Boston English.

“We have good experience, team chemistry and role acceptance,” Ortiz said about the strengths of this year’s squad.

Juniors Anyer Gomez, a catcher, and Jaurel Melo, a shortstop who had the game-saving catch in last season’s league finals, are the top returnees according to Ortiz, along with sophomore outfielder Yeduardy Soto.

“Reliance and being gritty are what I like about this team,” said the Boston English mentor, who points to depth as his biggest concern.

As for the keys to success this season, Ortiz has his thoughts on the subject.

“We need to continue to focus on developing one day at a time,” Ortiz explained. “We need to continue to build strength and remain healthy during the season.”

The hope is the Eagles can make it four straight Boston City League championships while reaching the state finals for a third year in a row.

“It’s about taking it one game at a time,” Ortiz concluded. “We need to be in the moment and support one another while building a selfless attitude.”
