2026 Spring Team Preview: South Portland (ME)

SOUTH PORTLAND, Me. - Thomas Owens has been coaching South Portland since the 2011 season with more than 200 wins.

“We are known for our pitching, defense and baserunning,” explained the successful head coach, who has a record of 208-78 entering the 2026 campaign. “Our teams have traditionally had some of the best pitching rotations, fundamentally sound defense and aggressive base running.”

Pitching looks stronger than ever for the Red Riots this coming season with four key returnees in seniors Hudson Iacuessa, Ben Morin and Parker Reny along with junior Brady Main.

Iacuessa, a left-handed committed to Stonehill, was 6-1 with 69 Ks and a 0.60 ERA last year while Morin, a right-hander headed to Southern Maine, was 3-2 with 29 strikeouts in 31.1 innings and a 1.56 ERA. Reny, a righty, had a 1.31 ERA and two saves while Main, a southpaw, was 2-1 with a 1.68 ERA in 16.2 frames.

“We are really deep in pitching this season,” Owens explained. “We have six legit varsity arms that should keep us in contention in all of our games and, hopefully, should help us make a deep run into the playoffs.”

Iacuessa, Reny and Main are all expected to help with the bat as well. All outfielders, Iacuessa hit .315 with 10 RBIs, four doubles and three triples, Reny averaged .289 with 10 RBIs and 10 stolen bases and Main batted .264 with three doubles and eight RBIs.

Catcher Cam Barrett is another valuable returnee. A senior signed with St.Joseph’s College, Barrett hit .242 last year.

“Cam was really important in helping our pitching staff to a 1.49 ERA for the entire season,” Owens noted. “He also threw out 40 percent of base stealers.”

Coming off a 12-6 season that ended with a 1-0 loss to Scarborough in the regional quarterfinals, hopes are for South Portland to hit better than a year ago.

“Last year we struggled at the plate, but we are hoping that we can find a way to be more competitive at the plate,” Owens said.

Junior Shea Healy, a left-handed pitcher and outfielder, is a newcomer being counted on to contribute on the mound and with the bat this season.

“I like our leadership and our pitching, especially our pitching depth,” Owens pointed out. “If we can stay healthy and score an adequate amount of runs I think we have a good shot to be one of the top teams in our league.”

Thornton, Falmouth, Gorham, Scarborough and Cheverus should all be teams to contend with according to the South Portland coach, the leader of a program that has won three conference, three regional and two spring championships in history.
