On Thursday we had a big SPSL match-up that was chalk full of talent as visiting Curtis took on host Sumner. The 2 league mates previously matched up on Tuesday with Curtis prevailing 5-4 in a tightly contested game. The re-match lived up to the billing early and then Sumner broke away with a big 6 run 3rd inning.

Curtis vs Sumner (3.26.26)

CURTIS

Curtis had a tough time generating offense in this match-up, totaling 3 hits in the contest.

‘26 C Joe Giles (Lower Columbia) was a standout yet again with his presence behind the plate as well as his ability as a hitter. Went 1-3 on the day with a hard line drive single up the middle on a CH down in the zone. Continues to have great feel for the hit tool with a keen eye and contact ability.

Uncommitted ‘27 1B Harlan Carrillo went absolutely bonkers at Preseason All-State with a huge BP performance flashing elite power potential. Went 1-3 on the day with a hard lined single into RF for his lone hit. Had a quality approach on the day and made disciplined swing decisions.

‘26 P/OF Bradley Dinelt (Lower Columbia) went 1-2 with a BB on the day while also getting the start on the bump. He had 2 strong innings before hitting a little snag with his control in the 3rd. Expect longer outings for the talented lefty in the future as he features a strong arsenal with a FB at 82-84 with a quality breaker in the mid 70s.

After Dinelt, Curtis got a strong relief outing from ‘26 Erik George. The righty attacked with a 2 pitch mix. FB 79-81 with a sweeping breaker at 69-73. Went 3 innings and only allowed 2 hits.

Would expect some more potent offensive days from this Curtis line-up as they fill all 9 spots with talented players and are one of the more predominantly left-handed teams we’ve seen.

SUMNER

On the mound, the Spartans turned to recent Wake Forest commit ‘27 Wyatt Plyler. The talented 2-way prospect was strong on the mound in this look, finishing with a final line of 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, BB, 7 K. Landing 44 of 66 pitches for strikes.

FB 87-89, T90.4
SL 73-76
CH 79-81

Plyler mixes his arsenal more than you might anticipate from an arm who can run it into the 90s. Early on, featured a heavy dose of SL & CH to both RHH and LHH and used the FB sparingly off of his secondaries. Later in the middle innings, he relied on the FB more in big spots and started to spot up with the heater when he was ahead in the count. The 2nd time thru the line-up, Curtis started to get a little rally going with back to back hits but Plyler showed his moxie and competitiveness by retiring the next 3 batters in a row and ended the inning with back to back K. Getting the shutdown inning after Sumner put up a 6 spot was a huge momentum swing in the game.

On offense, Sumner had a balanced attack and really capitalized on some freebies with runners on base. Overall they recorded 8 BB and 2 HBP to only 3 strikeouts. The traffic on the bases helped them scratch across 6 runs on only 5 hits.

‘27 INF Jake Miller (Washington) led the way offensively going 2-3, 2B, 2 RBI. His 2 run 2B in the 3rd took the game from 3-0 to 5-0 and was a huge differencemaker. Earlier in the game he added a sharp line drive single into the LCF gap. The advanced lefty stick showed quality swing decisions with easy bat to ball skills.

3 other players contributed hits on the day. Uncommitted ‘27 OF/C Bryce Carl went 1-3, R, RBI, HBP, ‘28 Liam Ferguson went 1-3, RBI and ‘26 Chase Hamlin added a 2B going 1-3, R.

After Plyler went 5, Sumner gave the ball to uncommitted ‘28 OF/LHP Brody Santman for the 6th and then ‘26 RHP Lucas Tromp (Lower Columbia) in the 7th.

Santman also started in CF and hit in the leadoff spot. The lefty is a pretty dynamic arm on the bump, with a riding FB at 80-84 and big CB at 66-67. The sophomore looks like he will be a key 2-way piece for Sumner this spring. Tromp pitched 80-85 with the FB and used a SL in the low 70s as his main secondary.
