We have our first update to the 2026 VA/DC Power 25. This update has a lot of variance in it, due to the fact that most private school teams have played more than five games, while some public school teams have not played more than two or three games. In 2025, the Virginia High School League pushed the season start and finish back one week, which has created some stark differences in where public and private teams are at in their season. Without further ado, we are going to highlight a few teams that have seen some movement in the Power 25.
VA/DC Power 25 Update Notes
+ The new #1 is Battlefield HS. While the Bobcats were the #2 team in the initial release, due to Miller School dropping back, Battlefield moves up. While they have not been tested, and quite possibly will not be for at least another week or so, they have a few tough games in the first two full weeks of April. The roster is uber talented and they have the best offensive potential of any team in the state.
+ St. Anne's-Belfield goes from unranked to #5 in this update. Is that big of a move common? No, but this is where the two week window before an update is a huge factor. While they would have moved into the Top 15-20 this past week, the three wins over Top 50 teams, and more specifically the two wins over Power 25 teams this past week make it a more than deserving move. Maybe some are wondering, how did we miss so big to start the season. Good question. A few key things on our end were:
- How will Oscar Hickey bounce back in 2026?
- He more than answered that this weekend.
- Do they have an arm that can throw the big games and be able to keep them in those games?
- Ryan Steeper has been that guy. He wants the ball in the big games and delivers consistent outings every time he is on the mound.
- This is a group, that while they have made some big strides in the right direction the past few years, they have not managed to win the big one. They were a just north of .500 team last season and they did not have a true Tier 1 win last season, so this was something that we needed to see this Saints team prove, and they certainly have.
- We knew they would be tested, but without that recent history of success in high level games, it was tough to go all in. They have proven it multiple times this season. The Saints have four wins over what we would consider Tier 1 teams, as well as three more over Tier 2 teams.
+ Three other previously unranked teams enter the Power 25 today. All of those teams were inside the Top 35 ranked teams in our database, with all three of them having some big turnover from last season. If we are getting even more specific, we would say that the losses from last season on the mound were probably the one area that all three of the teams had in common that our staff was worried about. While there is still time to determine whether that question is answered, they have showed well early this season.
- Greenbrier Christian enters at #17 after convincing wins over teams like Atlantic Shores, Steward, Cape Henry, and a close win over NSA. Their lone loss came on a doubleheader day to Benedictine, where they lost a one run lead in the bottom of the seventh.
- Oakton has jumped out to a 6-0 record, including two out of state wins on Sunday. The biggest standout from their season so far is how they are winning. In six games, the Cougars have allowed 8 total runs and have scored a combined 55 runs. Their only game inside of a three run margin of victory was a 1-0 win on Sunday where Andrew Sleight and Alex Ament allowed one hit over seven innings of work.
- Madison had potentially the most impactful losses on the mound from 2025, and while they have given up a few runs, the offense is showing up in a big way early on. The Warhawks have scored 35 runs in four games, including an 11 run outburst versus Belen Jesuit (FL) and Potomac Falls.
- Jefferson Forest has had a pretty light schedule to start the year, but how they are doing it has been impressive. In four games the Cavaliers have given up one run and scored 44 runs. The next two weeks will be a pretty decent test for JF, as they will face LCA and Glass during that two week stretch.
