#6 Bishop O'Connell 5, #12 Highland School 4

An early season match-up of two of the top teams in Virginia delivered on the pre-game hype. O'Connell opened the scoring in the first as Bryant James (Virginia) worked a leadoff walk and came around to score on an RBI groundout. Highland responded with 3 in the third, capped by a 2-run home run by Jack Arft. O'Connell responded with 3 of their own in the bottom of the third, with Chaz Walker driving in his second run of the game and Lucas Grubb driving in a run with a double to make it 4-3 O'Connell. Highland tied the game in the fifth on a Paolo Francioli RBI double that skipped right over first base. Both teams threatened in the sixth but couldn't push anything across. Grubb came up in the bottom of the seventh and ended the game with a walk-off hit. Jack Woda (East Carolina) had a multi-hit game for O'Connell and Shota Fogus (Richmond) threw 4 innings and struck out 8 to pick up the win. For Highland, Arft and Francioli each had two hits and Antonio Burke threw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

Meridian 10, Millbrook 0

An early-season Northwestern District matchup saw Millbrook make the trek in I-66 to Meridian. The story of the game was junior righty Luke Greiner, who threw a six-inning complete game 2-hit shutout, in just 74 pitches. He also struck out 6 and walked just 1. Offensively for the Mustangs, Greiner had 2 RBI, Andrew Niemi had 2 hits, and leadoff hitter Chris Capannola reached base in every at-bat with 3 walks and a hit. For Millbrook, Lane Williams had a double.

Westfield 5, #20 Woodgrove 4

It was a pitching duel early in the game, and then the bats came alive for both teams. Braiden Miller, Aiden Payne, and Ryan Renkes got the ball for Woodgrove and had to make big pitches throughout. Caden Cunnigham, Camden Felmey, and Braiden Miller led the way for Woodgrove with multi-hit games. Andrew Harkins maneuvered his way through the lineup, getting through four innings of work. Michael Cadolino had a big double to bring in a run late in the game. Alex Raymond (Marymount) had an RBI single that took the lead in the bottom of the sixth that went on to be the winning run for Westfield.

Douglas Freeman 4, Prince George 2

While the Royals of Prince George outhit Douglas Freeman, it was the Mavericks ability to capitalize with runners on that was the difference in this one. Jack Adams would double to left field to put runners on second and third in the bottom of the second. That double was followed by an Aaron Shook sacrifice fly to break the scoring open. Brody Parker would single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-0. The Mavs would add two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-0. Prince George had a little late rally, scoring two runs on an error with the bases loaded, but again would not be able to tie or capture the lead with runners on in the last two innings. Ben Bleicher worked 5.1 innings without giving up an earned run. Matthew Berrey was the only multi-hit guy for Freeman, while the Royals had four players with multiple hits.
