Q&A with Nebraska Commit Colton Petersmith

Eliott Wilk
Central Region Operations Director

OF Colton Petersmith (Rolla) is one of the top all-around athletes in the state’s senior class, currently ranked inside the top 20 of our rankings. The 6-foot, 178-pound L/L athlete brings impact 6.7 speed that plays up in-game, consistently showing a high motor on both sides of the ball. Petersmith’s all-fields approach at the plate and advanced feel for the barrel give him true top-of-the-order upside at the next level, where he is set to continue his playing career at Nebraska.

We recently had the chance to talk to Robertson about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.

Our Q&A

Prep Baseball: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Colton: I like that they were the first to reach out and put it out there that they wanted me to be a big part of their program, some of the key factors in making my decision was that the coaching staff and player made it feel at home.

PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

C: Baseball is a marathon not a sprint. It takes time to be great you won’t just be great. You have to work at it!

PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

C: No, I wanted to try and branch out and get out of the state.

PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

C: It really started my 15u season my coach talked to some schools and coaches about me. Nebraska first saw me in Indy my 16U season.

PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?

C: Yes, I would definitely say future games was a HUGE impact on my recruiting process. It just put me out there to a ton of schools and coaches.

PB: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

C: Some other schools on my list were Mizzou, TCU, Missouri State, Kentucky

PB: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

C: The best player I have faced in my state is definitely a tie between Tyler Putnam and then Jordan Martin. Ty just is so dominant when it comes to anything sports related and is a freak athlete and can find people’s flaws pretty easily whether that’s hitting or pitching. Then Jordan is also just one of those freak athletes if you put a ball in his hands he will shine no matter what but he is a dominant pitcher and baseball player he can pick teams apart single handedly.

PB: If you could steal any tool or quality from another player in the state, what would it be and who would it be from?

C: Definitely Putnam's Velo and Pitching

PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?

C: The next incoming player to watch out for coming through rolla is Benton Miller he is going to be an incoming freshman and has all the tools to be a great addition to rollas baseball program. Along with Parker Manley, another great incoming freshman that will be a key aspect to Rolla in the future.

PB: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

C: I realized I was a college caliber baseball player when I first joined the Nationals organization. I played with all of these kids that I knew of from social media and never thought I’d play with, and when I joined and played the first tournament I never looked back.

PB: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

C: Definitely making friends from my summer teams and playing with my boys from Rolla!
