2029 Overall Rankings Update

By Shooter Hunt
Vice President, Scouting

Ranking a class four years out is an exercise in tracking trajectory, and the June update of the Class of 2029 board is the first real read on how these prospects translated young, early looks in the offseason into real freshman-year production. Winter showcases gave us baselines and then the spring season gave us context. Today, we’re highlighting the players on this latest national update who made the most of the first spring of their high school careers, with all eyes turning to the Prep Baseball Super Sophomore Games as the next major checkpoint later this summer.

NEW #1 & TOP OF THE CLASS 👑

California native CF Mattias Di Maggio (Dos Pueblos HS, CA) ascends to the top spot in the 2029 class following a spring campaign that firmly established him as one of the premier young offensive talents in the country, regardless of graduation year. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed hitter pairs a highly projectable frame with present impact, showing the ability to drive the baseball with authority from gap-to-gap while consistently finding the barrel against advanced competition. There is looseness and explosiveness to the operation, with lightning-quick turns of the barrel that create a coveted hit/power combination. The offensive ceiling is among the highest in the class, and the athleticism he displays both in the batter’s box and in the outfield only adds to the allure. Already garnering significant attention from professional evaluators, Di Maggio possesses the type of foundational tools that profile at the highest levels of the game.

While Di Maggio enters the summer as the clear standard-bearer of the class, the separation at the top remains narrow. Fellow California product SS Cooper Holland (Santa Margarita HS, CA) checks in at No. 3 and stands as the premier infield prospect in the group after making a substantial impact during varsity competition in the nation’s most talent-rich high school league, the Trinity League. At 6-foot-3 with a lean, athletic build and considerable room for physical maturation, Holland brings an advanced offensive skill set highlighted by a mature approach and a natural ability to elevate the baseball. The left-handed hitter repeatedly proved capable of handling premium velocity and quality secondary offerings, showcasing a polished hit tool that is uncommon for his age. Coupled with his actions on the dirt and long-term physical upside, Holland projects as one of the highest-ceiling infielders in the country.

Continuing the West Coast dominance atop the rankings are Arizona standouts and Casteel High School teammates CF Macgraw VanWormer and OF Evan Thompson, who occupy the No. 2 and No. 4 spots, respectively. VanWormer may be the most dynamic athlete in the entire class, boasting top-of-the-scale tools that immediately jump off the page. The ultra-athletic center fielder has already posted 6.3-second 60-yard dash times while pairing elite speed with explosive strength and bat speed from the right side. The combination of athleticism, defensive ability, and offensive upside gives him one of the most exciting long-term projections in the country. With every look, VanWormer continues to reinforce the belief that he can remain in center field while developing into a middle-of-the-order offensive threat.

Thompson rounds out the quartet of elite Western prospects and may possess some of the most advanced pure offensive traits in the class. The left-handed hitter consistently looks comfortable and under control in the box, operating with the confidence and rhythm of a far older player. Already a physical presence, Thompson has produced triple-digit exit velocities, including a 102.9 mph peak, while showing some of the loudest raw power in the nation for his age group. A 6.8 runner underway, he offers more athleticism than often credited and profiles as a run-producing corner outfielder whose offensive upside could ultimately place him among the most dangerous bats in the class. The strength, leverage, and ease with which the ball leaves his barrel make him one of the premier power threats in the 2029 cycle heading into a pivotal summer evaluation period.

Evan Thompson (6/2/26)

TEXAS ENTERS THE DISCUSSION 🤠

With four players in the top-10 and eight in the top-25, the Lone Star State announced its presence with authority throughout the spring, and has the impact potential for a historical group coming out of the state. No. 5-ranked SS Myles McCarty (Wylie HS, TX) has the instincts and athleticism, along with a big left-handed bat, to rise even higher in coming years. The top-ranked player in the state dominated the spring, even as just a freshman, and his bat stands out as a potential middle-of-the-order feature.

Myles McCarty (5/28/26)

No. 6 INF Maddox Bryant (Kingwood HS, TX) might be the most polished bat in the country and the upside that his left-handed hitting impact holds is immense and surely to impact the national scene in coming years. No. 7 SS/RHP/QB1 Tristan Barton (Gunter HS, TX) and No. 8 SS Tripp Merren (St. Thomas HS, TX) each hold ultra-athletic looks and are sure to challenge for the top spot, not only in the state, but in the country over the next three years. Beyond the top four, this Texas class already has more than 10 players who could challenge for the top spot, and even more are destined to be uncovered in coming years.
