Top Prospect Upperclass: Quick Hits, Pitchers

Jackson Starling, RHP, 2027, Harris County
A continued line of production for Starling at Top Prospect Games showed well in our first look during a showcase setting. Exudes projection and stands a lean 6-foot-3, 188-pounds with body control. Loose arm stroke and creates deception out of a lower slot with feel to land all 3 in the zone. Fastball operated in the mid 80’s and changeup tunneled off it extremely well at 78-81 with R/R feel and fade/depth. Slider was spun over at 69-70 and compliments the rest of the arsenal. Pitchability stands out for Starling and the rising senior could be one to buy stock in as a huge ‘27 appears to be in store.

Asher Webb, RHP, 2027, Cherokee
The steady looks at Webb are quietly stacking up this summer. The right-hander exudes confidence and possesses a bulldog demeanor on the mound as he attacks in the zone with intent. Athletic mover down the mound at 5-foot-11, 155-pounds with ability to repeat the delivery as he hides the ball from a compact arm action. Live fastball through the zone at 85-86 T87 with arm-side run and command throughout. Tight slider at 79-81 that tunnels off the fastball for whiffs. Flips over a curveball as well with depth at 73-75. Also mixes in a quality changeup at 78. Webb has consistently performed over the years and looks poised for a breakout summer circuit.

Graham Swerdlin, RHP, 2027, North Springs
With a physical frame at 6’0 200, Swerdlin had an impressive outing on the mound yesterday by attacking hitters early in counts and keeping them guessing with command over three pitches. A good feel for the zone, Swerdlin’s fastball allows him to get ahead early and tunnel the breaker off of that. Slider has a sharp bite and Swerdlin uses it accordingly to play it off the heater. He gets down the mound well and has an advanced feel for the lower half, lead leg block lets him reach back and gain some extra velocity. As he continues to leverage his frame, Swerdlin will mature in his mechanics and grow as a pitcher and an athlete.

Wesley Blair, RHP, 2027, Blessed Trinity
Uncommitted 2027 attacks hitters with a power mix. The 6-foot-1, 208-pound righty had an impressive outing with a clean, repeatable delivery, which allowed him to fill up the zone with an 88 MPH FB and feel to land his vanishing CH for strikes consistently. Smooth mover gets down the mound well, generating velo from the ground up. Clear pitchabiilty to keep hitters off balance, attacking both sides of the plate.

Jensen Kown, RHP, 2027, Walker
Uncommitted. Athletic 6-foot-1, 190-pound has room to grow and features a starter’s mix. Advanced feel for spin and pitchabilty to both sides of the plate. FB topping 87 had carry (2300RPM) with a SL (2450 RPM), generating whiffs. Killed spin well with CH (1200 RPM) for weak contact. Moves well and gets down the mound, landing in a consistent spot. Repeated delivery from H ¾ slot fills up the zone all day in a clean inning of work.

Carter Gooch, RHP, 2027, Northview
Uncommitted. 6-foot-1, 170 pounds has room to grow into his frame and already features an innate ability to keep the ball on the ground. Lived in the zone with a tumbling CH from a consistent ¾ slot, generating plenty of weak contact in a clean 2 innings of work. Landed SL for strikes in all counts, which tunnels well off an 83MPH FB. Smooth repeated delivery with a competitive attitude on the mound.

Daniel Rico, RHP, 2027, Gainesville
Uncommitted. This was my second look at Rico, and he continues to impress. At 6-foot-4, 195 pounds, he possesses a durable frame with the ability to maintain his velocity throughout the outing. His command stands out, as he shows the ability to locate all three offerings. The fastball sat 86-88 mph with good ride through the zone and the ability to get in on the hands of hitters. The slider worked at 73-75 mph with sharp east-to-west movement and the ability to miss barrels. He also flashed a changeup with good arm action that fell off the table. Rico is a smooth mover down the mound who pitches with confidence and consistently fills up the strike zone. Overall, the combination of pitchability, command, and a durable frame makes him an intriguing arm to follow moving forward.
