We have our weekly to the 2026 VA/DC Power 25, this one being the third overall update. In 2025, the Virginia High School League pushed the season start and finish back one week, which has created some stark differences in where public and private teams are at in their season. Without further ado, we are going to highlight a few teams that have seen some movement in the Power 25. See some discussion on the Power 25 and many other topics on the most recent episode of High & Tight.
VA/DC Power 25 Update Notes
+ Atlee (5-1) remains at the #1 spot, but St. Anne's-Belfield (16-0-1) is nipping at their heels. This is a big week for the Saints to show that they are undoubtedly the #1 team in the state. They have a massive matchup Monday night in Crozet versus Miller School and two other sizable contests versus Collegiate, who rests just outside the Power 25. Both MSA and Collegiate have had some ups and downs early this season, but both have quality wins and the roster talent to upset #2 ranked STAB. No matter what happens with Atlee this week, if the Saints pull through this week with those four wins, it is signed, sealed, and delivered, they will be the new #1 team next week. They would have too many quality wins, no bad losses, and nobody would have any argument who has fought their way to that elusive #1 spot.
+ James River (Midlo) and Independence make the biggest jumps this week. The Rapids of James River have had some convincing wins of late, including a run rule victory in their only game last week. This week is also a big week for River, as they will face two of the best teams in the Dominion District, with Cosby and Powhatan being on back to back days to start the week. After that, things will lighten up quite a bit and they have a chance to run out to a 12-13+ unbeaten streak should they get through Monday and Tuesday. Independence is in a similar boat, minus the tough games this week. Coming off of a massive win over Battlefield last Friday, they do not have another higher tier matchup for the next 10-ish days, when they will face Briar Woods, Patriot, Gainesville, and Battlefield in a 14 day span. Similar to the above, if they can navigate through the next 2-3 weeks with a handful of tough games, they will be in great position come playoffs.
+ As far as the Power 25 is concerned, this is a make or break week for the Miller School Mavericks. This week alone they have #2 STAB on Monday, #17 Battlefield on Wednesday, #15 Greenbrier Christian on Friday, and a solid Cape Henry team on Saturday. The Mavs do not have one single game that is even close to a bad loss, they also do not have more than 1-2 top tier victories on the season. They have beaten some solid teams, but a flawless week this week would shut down any chirping and solidify them in the Power 25. There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that they have played the hardest schedule of any team in the state, but they need to string a couple of quality wins together to stay inside the Power 25 after this week because the losses are adding up.
+ From our end, it looks as though there are 15 undefeated teams remaining in the state, with four of them residing inside of the Power 25. Some teams on the outside that are undefeated are: Mountain View (6-0), Courtland (7-0), Brookville (5-0), Fort Chiswell (8-0), Central Lunenburg (4-0), Warhill (6-0), Alleghany (8-0), Carmel School (7-0), Kecoughtan (9-0), Tunstall (5-0), and Kettle Run (4-0). A couple of teams will have chances in the coming weeks to make a move inside the Power 25, maybe more specifically Mountain View, Courtland, Brookville, and Warhill. Some of the others are still certainly in contention, but without any higher end games on the schedule, it will make it tough to move inside. Some of those teams are in VHSL Class 1 and 2, and will more than likely make an appearance inside of the Small School Top 10 this week.
*If we missed your team being undefeated, we apologize. Please reach out and let us know if we have not listed your team as being undefeated and we will get that corrected.*
