The Prep Baseball Virginia/DC staff makes their way across the Commonwealth and DC throughout the spring to assist high school players in gathering evaluations, including video and some data, that allow our staff to assist in the potential recruitment of student-athletes.
With the staggering start of private and public schools, we have a deeper collection of notes and video on players in this edition of the Ground Forces Scout Blog.

Battlefield
| |
Garrett Camp 3B / RHP / Battlefield, VA / 2026Camp had a good showing at the plate, hammering a few balls. He is short to the ball and primarily worked gap to gap in the game. His swing generates line drives that have plenty of extra base power in the alleys.
Yogi Colangelo 2B / battlefield high school, VA / 2027Colangelo has been hot and is swinging the bat with a ton of confidence. Aggressive in the zone but has gotten better at not chasing outside of the zone. Still primarily a pull hitter but showed the ability to get the barrel to the ball in odd places and put it in play. He has plenty of natural power to his pull side.

Josh Gunning 3B / RHP / Battlefield, VA / 2028Back in the lineup this week for Battlefield and back at shortstop. Defensively, he has very good hands and a quick exchange and plenty of arm strength at short. Handled some odd hops very well and made tough plays look relatively routine. At the plate, he showed his usual gap-to-gap line drive approach that produces plenty of power in the alleys.

Teagan Leach LHP / 1B / Battlefield High, VA / 2027As has been often discussed, Leach has a big physical frame with good strength present to it. Shows power to all fields and takes very mature, patient at-bats. Comfortable using all fields, as he easily has the power to hit it out of the park everywhere. In this game, he had hits to all fields, turned on and blistered a line drive to right for a single, punched a hard grounder up the middle for another, and then hit a sky-high fly to the warning track in the left field corner that got above the lights and was misplayed. Also showing some quickness and feel on the bases, getting a good jump and stealing a bag at one point.

Charlottesville
| |
Henry Hughes RHP / 2B / Charlottesville High, VA / 2027Came on in relief and was able to hold the opposition to only one hit in his 2.1 innings of work, picking up five strikeouts. He also had a fine day at the plate, picking up two walks and a loud barrel for a single into left field.
Collegiate
Corey Elliott 3B / SS / Collegiate, VA / 2028Athletic frame with quick hands through the zone and bat-to-ball skills that played in game. Picked up two intriguing barrels to center field in this one. The first being a single up the middle and the second being a deep RBI sacrifice fly. One to keep an eye on as he continues to develop.
| |
Emery Williamson RHP / 3B / Collegiate, VA / 2027Was all over the barrel on this day, sending two rocket home runs out of left field. Finishing the day going 2 for 2, picking up 4 RBI's, and adding a walk as well. Has been a nice piece in the middle of the Collegiate lineup that has been putting together a strong year.
Covenant
| |
Hudson Reese SS / 2B / The Covenant School, VA / 2026Was 2-4 on the day, with two early count singles that worked to both sides. Also would score the game-tying run in the seventh inning.
Edison
Zyler Munoz OF / Edison, VA / 2027Munoz was a major contributor for the Edison offense on Tuesday, getting on base in all three of his at bats. Munoz tallied two singles, both towards right center field, and a walk. Munoz worked with a simple load and a quick bat. He was also comfortable with two strikes, with both of his singles coming when behind in the count. Munoz also showcased his speed with a stolen base.
Freedom
| |
Brodie Carver SS / RHP / Freedom High School, VA / 2026Athletic frame and a quick, explosive mover. Has some batspeed and a gap-to-gap approach with doubles power. Quickness on the bases and good breaks. As is usual for a Freedom player, plays with a good kind of edge and a grinder attitude.
Ian Choi RHP / 3B / Freedom (South Riding), VA / 2029Tall athletic frame, some present strength but plenty left to dream on. Delivery is slightly closed off, hiding the ball; shoulders are a bit downhill as he strides out closed. Short quick arm action from a three-quarters arm slot. Fastball was 86-88 early, touching 89 twice in the first inning. He was still holding 85-86 and touching 87 in the fourth. Pitch has some ride at the top of the zone, and he got swing and misses with it. Slider has a 10/4 shape and some arm speed, running 74-76 in the outing. Pitch has some shape and a chance to be a weapon as it tightens as he ages and develops.
| |
Luke Kozlowski LHP / 1B / Freedom High, VA / 2027Lanky lefty with a low slot. Was right around 77-78 the entire evening but throws a big breaking ball that was 66-70. Very breaking ball heavy mix making his fastball play up, and the crossfire in his delivery helps hide it as well. A ton of room on the frame to add strength and see that velo tick up. Made some big pitches in the game.

Greenbrier Christian
Ryan Watson 1B / RHP / Greenbrier Christian Academy, VA / 2027Had a strong performance at the plate, going 3-4 with three singles. Puts together quality at-bats, each look with a heavy barrel. Jumped on the mound to collect a save. The fastball was up to 87, working in the zone. He had a strong feel for the curveball at 74.

Hayfield
| |
Mason Archer C / SS / Hayfield Secondary, VA / 2027Archer has shown out in front of our staff multiple times this spring, and Tuesday was no different. The uncommitted junior went 2 for 3 with two crucial RBIs. Archer tied the game in the 3rd with an RBI single hit hard through the left side. In the 5th, Archer showed his in-game power with a go-ahead homerun. He has a quick and level bat and has continued to show his ability to generate power to the pull side. Archer has a built 6’0”, 170-lb frame and has also shown his athleticism behind the plate.
| |
Sam Giacobbi OF / RHP / Hayfield Secondary, VA / 2027It was a good day for Giacobbi, tallying a 3 for 3 day with three singles and a stolen base. Giacobbi was a line drive machine, with single after single coming off his bat and landing in the outfield. Giacobbi mostly worked up the middle and to the opposite field, showcasing an ability to hit to all fields.
| |
Nolan Taylor RHP / OF / Hayfield Secondary, VA / 2026Taylor had a great start for Hayfield, going 6.1 innings without an earned run, with seven strikeouts and only one walk. The Juniata commit mainly showed a two-pitch mix between his fastball and curveball. He also flashed a changeup. The fastball got up to 83 in the first, but he settled in the high 70s/low 80s and maintained that velocity into the seventh. Taylor worked with a quick and deceptive arm and kept hitters off balance.

Independence
| |
Colton Hicks 3B / RHP / Independence High, VA / 2026Had a solid day at the plate as well, hitting in front of Spagna. Line drive hitter with doubles power to all fields that can reach a bit more to his pull side. Swing sets up to pull the ball, but he can go back up the middle or the other way if a pitch dictates it. Also closed the game out with 4 innings. Fastball was 83-84, touching 86. Slider has good arm speed and late break at 76.
Aidan Spagna C / OF / Independence High, VA / 2026Spagna had a great night all around. He blocked/received well, and he made some good quick, accurate throws on stolen base attempts. At the plate, he was locked in. Three hits on the day, a home run to just right of center, a double to deep left-center, and another single up the middle. He showed good rhythm to his swing and did a good job of working at-bats into good counts while also not being afraid to be aggressive early in the count if the pitch was where he wanted it. The real power is to his pull side, although he can drive the ball plenty to the middle of the field and the opposite way. He also does a good job of not selling out to pull the ball, mostly working gap to gap.
Lightridge
| |
Matt Coleman 1B / LHP / Lightridge High School, VA / 2026The senior lefty did a great job in the game as the starter for Lightridge. Has some two-way potential depending on the level. Hides the ball with an extreme crossfire delivery and a very short, higher three-quarters arm slot. Curveball has a very vertical shape, which is rarer from lefties, and his fastball has some late run. His fastball was up to 82 and mostly right around 80, but he hides it so well that it was getting on hitters and creating a lot of late swings early. Could be a good late add for a program.
Western Albemarle
Andrew Maslaney OF / 3B / WESTERN ALBEMARLE HIGH, VA / 2029The freshman makes the routine play on defense. At the plate, he was able to get the barrel to an elevated fastball and sent a line drive into right field to score a runner, showing aggressiveness to take second base on the throw in.
