Lockport Rising Stars ID: Takeaways & Statistical Analysis

By: Illinois Scouting Staff

On Wednesday, April 15th, the Prep Baseball Illinois staff traveled to the Bo Jackson Sports Dome in Lockport, IL, for the Lockport Rising Stars ID. This event, like all Rising Stars events this spring, serve as an open identifier into the state's 2030 and 2031 graduates, providing our staff an early look at the area's top players as they continue to progress as prospects.

These early Rising Stars events also serve as key identifiers for future invite-only events, including the Prep Baseball Junior Future Games and the Illinois Rising Stars Game coming on Tuesday, June 2nd.

Today we take a look at a couple of the standouts, as well as breakdown the top statistical performers from the day with our “Statistical Analysis” below.

TAKEAWAYS

The event featured a number of impressive young prospects, in particular, a bunch of infielders with advanced actions and the ability to stick on the dirt for the long haul.

Ashton Turner (Marian Catholic) was one of the top 2030 defensive infielders with smooth actions and soft hands. He should be a mainstay up the middle of the infield for years to come.

Casey Gabriel (Lockport) and Michael Hussey (Providence Catholic) were highly impressive infielders as well, both leading the event as 2031s, topping at 82 mph across the infield.

2030 OF’s Griffin Cunningham (Brother Rice) and Trae Herring (Normal Community) were two of the better defensive outfielders on the day. Cunningham has a long-levered projectable frame, lively arm, led the event with a 7.00 60 time and all kinds of upside to his overall profile.

Quinn Riechers (Lincoln-Way East) and Zachary Falkner (Lincoln-Way West) are two 2030 catchers who made a name for themselves behind the plate as well. Both topped at 70 mph from the crouch and had low pop times around 2.13.

There were a number of other 2030s and 2031 who are bound to be high-follows down the road and earned invites to the upcoming Illinois Rising Stars Game in early June.
