The high school baseball season is officially underway. This is our favorite time of the year and we can’t wait to cover the state from now until the state championship. Be sure to to be tuned in daily for content on the season. Everything high school baseball related will be on the GHSA tab on our website. It can be found HERE. This will include the Power 25, Classification Rankings, weekly scout blogs and more.

Here we will take a look at the games our scouts went to from the previous day and highlight key moments, standout players and our takeaways from the game.

Friday

GAC @ Pickens

Score: Pickens wins, 9-1

Standouts:

Kam Jenkins, C, 2026, Pickens

Robert Turner, OF, 2026, Pickens

Everett Grubbs, RHP/3B, 2027, Pickens

Jennings Allen, SS, 2027, Pickens

Key moments: The Dragons jumped out to an early lead thanks to a Jennings Allen double and a Kam Jenkins RBI single to make it 1-0 after the 1st inning. The game remained 1-0 as it went to the 5th where the Dragons would break things open during a 6-run inning. Christian Starks kickstarted the rally with a lead-off single followed by a pair of bunt singles from Matthew Davis Jr. and Robert Turner. Jennings Allen stayed out as he came through with the bases loaded and sent a screamer back into centerfield for a 2 RBI single. The hit rolled along as Kam Jenkins added his 2nd and 3rd RBI’s on the day via a double. The baserunners and hits continued to pile up as Truitt Grubbs reached by a HBP and Everett Grubbs helped himself out on the mound with a 2 RBI single and AJ Rice followed Grubbs with a double to cap off the inning. As it was Dragons 7-0 after 5-innings played. Pickens tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the 6th backed by a Robert Turner RBI triple as it was 9-0 going to the 7th. Everett Grubbs nearly pitched a shutout as an error and 2-out RBI single got the Spartans on the board to make it a 9-1 final.

Avery’s Takeaway: Everett Grubbs was extremely locked in and lived for the moment as he was up to the task with a region championship on the line. Had the entire mix working as he went for a complete game with only 3-hits (all singles), 0 ER (1R), 2 BB, and 9 K. When Grubbs is going like this paired with the pitchability of AJ Rice this is going to be one of the toughest outs in all of 3A. Robert Turner and Jennings Allen paced the offense all night atop the order with multi-hit games and are the engine that make this team go with high-level hit/speed combos. Kam Jenkins embodies an instant run producer in the heart of the order as he came through with a multi-hit game and 3 RBI. The depth of this lineup always stands out as other base-hits came from Everett Grubbs, AJ Rice, Christian Starks, and Matthew Davis Jr. This is a well-connected group that seems to be clicking at the right time with their sights set on a 3A playoff run. GAC will look to bounce back as they dropped the rubber game and gear up for the playoffs in the Private classification as they have the pieces to where they could certainly make a run.

Calhoun @ Heritage

Score: Calhoun win, 13-1

Standouts:

Matthew Zander, RHP/3B, 2028, Calhoun

Camden Stewart, 2B, 2026, Calhoun

Peyton Wilson, 1B, 2028, Heritage

Rocco Baxter, LHP/OF, 2027, Calhoun

Key Moments: The offense for the Jackets came out hot from the start as they would plate 5 runs in the first inning thanks to RBI swings from Rocco Baxter and Jake Williams. Baxter would add another run in the middle innings as the primary LHP would launch his first career HR to RF. Calhoun would put another crooked number up in the 4th that would put the finishing touches on the region sweep. 7 hits and 7 runs in the inning including doubles from Camden Stewart, Chris Ware and Matthew Zander. Pitching was strong again for the Jackets as Zander would earn the win, going an efficient 4.0 scoreless IP with just 2 hits and tons of soft contact.

Ian’s Takeaway: Calhoun ends the regular season rolling on all cylinders as the Jackets have won their last 9 straight while outscoring opponents 81-24 over that span. Lineup shows impact 1-through-9 with Camden Stewart and Chris Ware set the tone at the top with a slew of run producers behind in the likes of Hudson Chadwick, Ryder Hood, Matthew Zander and more. Pitching has been equally impressive this spring as the junior trio of Rocco Baxter, Mason Peek, and Zander have emerged as a three-headed monster that this coaching staff can feel confident in on a nightly basis and that depth will be extremely valuable heading into the 3A playoffs next week.
