Throughout the VA/DC high school season, our staff travels far and wide to identify the best players in the Commonwealth. In additon to that, our staff delivers evaluations and video to assist players in their recruiting process. Every week our staff members provide notes and video in an assortment of scout blogs. Jordan Jones, the Virginia/DC Assistant Scouting Director, will be delivering his weekly scout blog on some of the players he saw during his travels.

Jordan's Scout Blog

Atlantic Shores

Brody Beasley SS / RHP / Atlantic Shores Christian School, VA / 2028

It is a lean, athletic, 6-foot-3, 201-pound frame. Beasley was on barrel a couple of times in this one, picking up a single and a loud line out to center field. It is a relaxed setup with a simple load that works from the middle to the pull side in his approach. There is some strength present and can impact the baseball to the pull side. He showed off some range and arm strength with some plays on the move at shortstop. On the mound he attacked the zone and competed. The fastball was up to 87 and mixed in a few breaking balls as well. There is some room left to grow and add strength, which could add more intrigue to the offensive profile.

Benedictine

Cooper Crabtree C / 2B / Benedictine College Preparatory, VA / 2029

Crabtree has started to put together a track record of being able to hit in his young career. He shows confidence in the box and awareness of the strike zone. He handled himself well throughout the day and picked up a single in his last at-bat. There is bat-to-ball skill, and he can flash some impact to the pull side. Defensively, he made the routine plays at second base and has some position versatility, being able to go behind the plate as well. He’s very vocal and high energy that brings a high-end competitiveness to the game that is infectious and fun to watch.

Luke Moore 3B / OF / Benedictine College Preparatory, VA / 2027

Moore put together consistent at-bats that resulted in the same result. He had three singles into center field that each brought in a run. It is a slight rhythm in the hands with a simple, level barrel path that has line drive tendencies. He is aggressive and attacks pitches in the zone. It was an impressive showing with the consistent ability to find the barrel.

Carmel School

Jaxon Beasley OF / LHP / The Carmel School, VA / 2027

Beasley was on barrel throughout the day and was the spark plug at the top of the lineup. He is confident in the box with bat-to-ball skills. It is a middle-to-pullside approach that can flash some impact to the pull side. It is a wiry, athletic frame that still has room to add strength. He was instinctive by swiping bags when on the base paths. He took good routes in center field and made the needed outs.

Alfred Maass OF / 1B / The Carmel School, VA / 2027

The offensive potential with Maass is really intriguing with the intangibles that he brings. He is an aggressive hitter that looks to hammer anything that crosses the plate. He is comfortable with using all parts of the field. He has the bat speed and the power to run the ball out of any part of the yard. Being able to impact the baseball with his above-average foot speed can lead to extra base hits when he isn’t running the ball out of the yard. Defensively it is a corner outfield profile long term with above-average arm strength and some power potential to go with it.

Central Virginia Homeschool

Zack Bergh 1B / LHP / Homeschool (VA), VA / 2027

Some loud contact came off of the bat of Bergh a couple times on Friday, including a loud home run late in the game. It is a long, wiry frame at 6-foot-3, 187-pounds, that has some strength present with more to add. The swing functions from the left side with the ability to turn the barrel in a tight window. He works from line to line and can impact the baseball to the pull side when the hands get extended. The offensive potential is intriguing when he adds some bulk to the frame.

Josiah Pulling SS / RHP / Homeschool (VA), VA / 2028

Pulling is a fun one to watch when he is in the infield. He works with good pace and footwork, setting himself up to make the play. He has the instincts and the athleticism to make plays on the move, and he is confident in it. The arm strength is slightly above average, and he put that on display on multiple plays. He is an aggressive hitter that gets his best swings off when the hands get extended. He had a double down the third base line, where he made quality contact. He plays with an edge and a high motor that can impact the game.

Halifax County

Garison Colwell 3B / SS / Halifax County High, VA / 2026

Colwell made a lot of hard contact throughout the night, leading to two hits. He was aggressive early in counts and took advantage of some elevated pitches. It is a compact frame with some strength present that can impact the baseball. He was consistent at shortstop with fundamental actions to make the routine play. He has a track record of being able to hit, and the impact has improved to expand the offensive profile.

Ryder Milam RHP / OF / HALIFAX COUNTY HIGH, VA / 2028

Milam got the start on the mound and kept Halifax within striking distance. The fastball worked in the low eighties, and the curveball was heavily relied on. He was able to start counts off with the curveball and bury the pitch with two strikes and get some chases. Offensively, he put a good swing on a ball and got a double. There is rhythm in the hands with natural loft in the path. It is lean strength in the frame that still has more room to add strength. As he continues to mature, the velocity will tick up, and the potential for more impact in the bat.

Patrick County

Jaiden Wilson OF / RHP / Patrick County High, VA / 2026

Wilson had a strong showing on both sides and caught my eye before the game even started. In the pregame in the outfield, he took crisp, precise routes to the baseball, and that translated over into the game. He took away a big hit late for Halifax as he ran a baseball down in the gap and made a great play. Offensively, he had a hit on the night with a single. He showed a good approach and took aggressive swings at pitches in the zone.

St. Christopher's

Jaerron Johnson OF / SS / St. Christopher's, VA / 2027

A big hit late in the game for Johnson helped St. Christopher’s to a win in a pitching duel. He had some tough at-bats early in the game but came up clutch when they needed him the most. He jumped on a fastball early in the count and sent it to deep center field for a double. He is a good athlete with physicality that can impact the baseball.

Toney Smith C / 2B / Richmond st christopher, VA / 2028

Smith jump-started the Saints offense in the sixth as he hit a leadoff single in a two-strike count. He takes some confident at-bats against quality competition and doesn’t shy away from competition. He was aggressive and took good swings at pitches in the zone. It is a compact frame that shows impact to the gaps. He took the behind the plate duties and threw out a runner late in the game to keep it close. He brings a maturity to the game that catches your eye.

Trinity Episcopal

Jalen German RHP / 1B / Trinity Episcopal, VA / 2026

In my four years of watching German, this may have been the best start that I have seen from him. He was in control of the game and worked with intent and good pace. He threw six strong innings, picking up thirteen strikeouts, and didn't allow a hit until the sixth. He showed feel for the whole arsenal, having success in the zone with all three. The fastball was 90-92 and held that velocity during the outing. When he ran the fastball inside to right-handed hitters, he created some uncomfortable swings with the natural sink. The slider was the go-to pitch, and he generated plenty of swings and misses. The changeup was used later in the outing, and it had quality fade and depth that was used to left-handed hitters. When German is dialed in like this and shows this type of power stuff, then he is one of the most difficult pitchers to hit in the state.
