The Prep Baseball Virginia/DC staff makes their way across the Commonwealth and DC throughout the spring to assist high school players in gathering evaluations, including video and some data, that allow our staff to assist in the potential recruitment of student-athletes.
With the staggering start of private and public schools, we have a deeper collection of notes and video on players in this edition of the Ground Forces Scout Blog.

Amelia County
| |
Alex Baird RHP / OF / Amelia County High, VA / 2028A lankier frame, throws from a lower 3/4 slot with a long arm action. Easier-paced windup with mixed tempo in the delivery at times. Fastball-heavy mix with some late sink, 84-86. Played the splitter well off the fastball early in counts and kept hitters off balance, 79-81.

Hampton
| |
Jaycob Flores 3B / OF / Hampton, VA / 2026Easy effort swing that connected on the barrel three times in the game. He didn't try to do too much at the plate and took what was given to him. Contact, hit tool bat that plays a big role in the Crabbers' offense.

James Madison
|
Luke Ayer RHP / OF / Madison High, VA / 2026Ayer pitched a quick 7th in a Warhawks win. Ayer worked in the zone in his 1IP, needing just 15 pitches with 13 being strikes. He worked around a single, punching out two hitters. Ayer was primarily fastball, featuring from 85-87. He worked it to both halves and blew it by hitters. Ayer works from a high arm slot and is a fluid mover down the mound.

Brady Myers LHP / 1B / Madison High, VA / 2027The William & Mary commit was dominant on Tuesday, going 5IP with four strikeouts and only three baserunners. Myers has a projectable 6’4”, 200-lb frame with repeatable mechanics. He relied on his fastball, working early in the low 80s with a top of 86 and working late between the high 70s and low 80s. He mixed in a breaking ball in the low 70s with an 11/5 shape but did not need it much.

Kecoughtan
| |
Dominick DiCarlo SS / OF / Kecoughtan High, VA / 2029Was able to pick up a backside line drive single in this one. Looked comfortable and made multiple routine plays at shortstop throughout the contest. One to keep an eye on as he develops.

Lightridge
| |
Andrew Webb RHP / 3B / Lightridge High School, VA / 2026Lankier athletic frame with some projection left. Athletic explosive delivery works from a higher three-quarters arm slot. Arm action is short, loose, and very quick with some late intent to it. Fastball was 90-91, touching 92 multiple times in the first few innings, it has a bit of natural cut to it that causes it to really ride hard at the top of the zone. He was still holding 88-89 at the 100-pitch mark in the seventh, and his last two fastballs were both 90. Also showed a hard two-seamer or sinker that had a significantly different shape with run and sink to it and was only a tick or so off the fastball at 88-89 early in the game. The changeup was 81 early with late hard fade and good armspeed, primarily used it against LHHs and can really pull the string on it. Slider was 77-79 with a tighter 11/5 break to it. Ended the game against a lefty with a diabolical sequence, sinker at 85 for a foul ball, pulled the string on a changeup at 78 for strike 2, and then busted him up and in with 90 above the hands that the hitter somehow got the tiniest piece of before flying out on a slider. Has some rise to the moment energy too, a phenomenal pickup for Lynchburg.

Marshall
|
Elijah Petty OF / RHP / Marshall High School Academy, VA / 2028The sophomore had a good outing, working 1.1 innings, striking out and walking one. Petty worked between two pitches: a fastball with arm-side run and a sweeping slider. The fastball worked in the low 80s and was consistently in the zone. The slider was used more with two strikes and was a solid secondary offering. Petty worked athletically and with a quick arm down the mound.

Luke Torres 3B / OF / Marshall High, VA / 2028While the bat didn’t show up as it has in the past in front of our staff, Torres still had a strong day on Wednesday. Late in the 7th, Torres took a mid-80's fastball the other way for a hard-hit single, continuing to show his ability to hit to all fields. Defensively, Torres impressed again. He started in center field and looked comfortable. Later in the contest, he moved to third base, where he was a vacuum and made multiple impressive plays. This included showing his athleticism on a slow chopper hit in front of him.

Potomac Falls
|
Caden Bell RHP / 1B / Potomac Falls High, VA / 2026Tall frame, some strength present but also projection left to it. Shorter quick loose arm action, very low slot, a tick above sidearm. Some crossfire in his delivery creates deception and hides the ball. Quite the mix of pitches on display in the game. The fastball was 87-88, touching 89, with a touch of armside run and some ride up in the zone. Turned over a sinker at 85 with heavy arm-side run and sink to it. Change had good arm speed and late fade at 80-81. The slider was the primary breaking pitch with a sharp 10/4 break at 76-79. Also flashed a curve with more 11/5 break at 72. Showed ability to throw all pitches for strikes. Pitch count got up with a lot of deep counts, hitters had a tough time putting him in play, and the edges of the zone were tight, which cut down on the number of quick in-play outs he got in the game. The stuff will play, and he has a variety of weapons to attack LHHs and RHHs next year in college.
