Continuing with coverage from across various District tournaments, on Tuesday we made our way to Funko Field for some District 1 3A match-ups featuring Wesco and NWC teams. Our first showdown had defending 3A state champs Mount Vernon versus Monroe. And in the nightcap we saw Edmonds-Woodway battle Snohomish. Both games were ‘winner to state’ match-ups. The losing teams would not be eliminated and could still end up making the tournament if they fight their way through the remainder of the bracket.

MOUNT VERNON VS MONROE (5.12.26)

MOUNT VERNON

First, for Mount Vernon, this was an offensive explosion. They cruised to a 14-0 victory in a run-shortened 5 inning game vs Monroe.

The offensive was clicking on all cylinders throughout with every starting position player collecting a hit. A few key performances of note…

Junior OF Brady Peterson delivered the first crucial blow of the game in Bottom 1. With the bases loaded, he drove a ball into the RCF gap that got down for a 3 RBI triple. This took the game from 1-0 to 4-0 quickly and there was no slowing down from there. Peterson put a nice swing on an outside FB and caught it flush on the barrel with extension after contact. Junior prospect has some strength in the levers and quality athleticism.

Seniors Baird Brewer (Seattle U) and Brady Collins (Edmonds CC) combined for 6 total hits, 5 runs scored and 5 RBI. Fellow senior Bode Webb (Bellevue CC) was 1-2, 2B, 3 R, RBI and BB as well. The powerful trio at the top of the line-up have as much slugging and hitability as any core in the state. After hugely successful junior seasons that helped propel them to a state championship, they’ve continued to get it done when it matters.

On the mound, ‘27 LHP Connor Swanson cruised through 5 easy shutout innings allowing just 2 H and a BB while striking out 4. The lanky lefty has consistent command of his FB/CB combo and is a frustrating match-up with his late movement and ability to change speeds.

Mount Vernon is currently on a 20 game win streak and will face Snohomish on Saturday in the District championship with the chance to improve their seeding in the 3A bracket.

MONROE

For Monroe, this was a tough assignment on both sides of the ball and not a lot of things went their way unfortunately.

Offensively they had 2 hits on the day. Uncommitted ‘27 SS Adam Manke  only had 2 ABs on the day but he made them count. After he barreled up a ball to center for a well struck F8, he lined a hard single up the middle in his next AB. Overall he shows feel for the barrel at the plate with strike zone discipline and a contact approach. More of a compact frame with shorter levers that help him stay grounded at contact and work short to the ball. Quality actions on defense in pregame from SS with a quick exchange into his throws.

Senior AJ Welch (Washington) added the only additional base-hit with an oppo single in his 2nd AB. The future Husky arm has put together some strong performances on the mound as of late and handles 3B duties when he’s not on the bump.

‘27 OF/P Mike Enrico had a brief pitching appearance in this one but he flashed quality stuff against a premium line-up. The FB ranged 79-81 coming from a shorter, tight arm action with late hand speed out front. Given the arm action and quickness, I wouldn't be shocked to see him make some jumps with his pure stuff in the future.

Monroe will look to keep their season alive on Saturday.

SNOHOMISH VS EDMONDS-WOODWAY (5.12.26)

SNOHOMISH

Snohomish was victorious in this one with a narrow winning margin of 3-2 against Edmonds-Woodway. The Panthers have secured their spot in the 3A state tournament and play Mount Vernon on Saturday for 1 final district game to help determine seeding.

On the mound, they split the game with 2 quality arms. ‘26 Rider Walsh got the ball out of the gate and went 4 innings allowing just 1 ER on 3 H. Walsh pitched 81-84 with the FB and used an 11/5 CB at 70-73 for his main secondary.

After Walsh, Snohomish turned to uncommitted ‘27 Blake Smith who showed a heavy FB at 83-86 with an occasional SL in the 77-79 range. Smith relied on his FB command to get through the line-up and did a nice job inducing weak contact when he stay down in the zone.

On the offensive side of things, the most impactful hit came from ‘26 3B Reve LeRoux in the bottom of the 1st. His 2 RBI single established an early lead and put the Panthers in the driver’s seat through the opening frames. Additionally, uncommitted ‘27 Landon Klein went 1-3 on the day with a run scored and BB. There wasn’t a ton of loud production from the offensive in this game but they drew 5 BB and capitalized when they had opportunities.

EDMONDS-WOODWAY

Edmonds-Woodway is a pesky, scrappy type offense that is willing to do all the little things to push across runs. They only had 4 total hits on the night with 5 BB and a HBP. Also worth noting that their hitters did not record a single strikeout. The contact approach definitely puts added pressure on the opposition to pitch it well and execute on defense.

Overall, ‘26 C Trevelyan Podawiltz (Saint Martin’s) was a standout bat going 1-4 with a 2B that was the only XBH of the game. He also nearly tied things in the 7th and kept the game alive but was robbed of a RBI hit by a nice defensive play. Podawiltz is strong and physical, especially in the upper half and he can really impact the ball with authority. Has quality feel for the zone and put together sound swing decisions in his ABs.

On the mound, uncommitted ‘27 RHP Declan Crawford went the distance in this one. Tallied 6 IP and allowed 3 ER on 6 H and 5 BB while punching out 7. He had some struggles early in the 1st but showed some maturity and composure to settle in and go the distance the rest of the way. The FB worked 83-86, T87 and paired well with his sharp upper 70s SL that he commands in all counts. Overall it was a gritty performance and when it was all said and done he had given his team an opportunity to win.

The Warriors will be back on the diamond Saturday with the goal of keeping their season alive.
