Michigan Diamond Notes: April 20-26

A pair of players commited to Power Conferences are showing why there was so much interest as Ethan Armstrong and Jackson Fossitt continue to light it up for their high school teams. 

Armstrong handed New Boston Huron its first defeat of the season with a complete game shutout on the mound. The 41st-rated 2026 RHP in the country gave up just two hits and one walk while setting 11 down on strikes in the seven-inning masterpiece 5-0 victory over the No. 4 team in this week’s Power 25. The Michigan signee has 35 strikeouts and a lone walk in 17 scoreless innings entering the week.

The Garden City senior also impressed at the plate going 3-6 with a triple, two home runs and three RBIs in three games on the week. Against Salem, the top-ranked senior in Michigan had a two-run homer in the sixth and, after Salem tied the game with two in the top of the seventh, belted a triple and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to give the No. 14 team in Division 2 a 3-2 victory.

Fossitt, a Kentucky commit, had 17 strikeouts in seven two-hit innings. The 22nd-ranked junior left-handed pitcher in the nation did not allow an earned run and the No. 1 2027 southpaw in Michigan now has 24 Ks in 11 innings on the season, giving up three hits and no earned runs.

The Leslie standout also produced huge numbers with the bat, going 10-15 with three home runs and three doubles, scoring 10 runs and driving home eight. For the season, the right-handed hitting 11th-grader is batting .513 with 11 RBIs, seven doubles, one triple, three home runs and 21 runs scored.

BATS ARE HOT

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Drew Tribul hit for the cycle in the first game of a doubleheader with St. Francis de Sales (OH), and followed it up with two homers in the nightcap.

But the Michigan State commit did much more over the course of the week. The No. 3 2026 third baseman in Michigan had four homers in six games, driving in 15 runs while scoring 11 for the third-ranked team in the state in the Power 25. The left-handed hitting senior went 10-18 throughout the week with a pair of doubles and a triple.

- Williamston’s Kaleb Nielson continues his amazing season posting a 1.846 OPS for the week for the No. 5 Division 2 team in Michigan with an 8-10 performance at the plate. The uncommitted left-handed hitting senior had eight stolen bases, six runs, three walks, three RBIs and a pair of doubles. Nielson now carries a .590 batting average on the year at 23-39, scoring 23 runs with 14 RBIs, 12 walks and five doubles, stealing 17 bases while posting a 1.361 OPS.

- Logan Long scored six times and drove in six in an 8-19 week batting, and now has 10 runs and nine RBIs on the year. The senior catcher for Potterville is also getting it done behind the plate, turning one double play and throwing out four runners and has now thrown out six with a .963 fielding percentage.

- Sacred Heart won four games to improve to 14-0 with Brady Davis and Hank MacDonald leading the way at the plate. Davis, the 177th-rated senior in the state, was 8-11 with eight runs and eight RBIs and is now hitting .667 on the year with 25 runs and 28 RBIs. MacDonald went 5-9 with six runs and 12 RBIs to improve his season totals to seven doubles and 31 runs scored.

- Bennett Gaston was a triple short of the cycle in a win over Chelsea, belting a grand slam, single and double in a 3-4 performance for Lumen Christi Catholic, the top-rated team in the state in Division 3. The third-ranked junior shortstop in Michigan finished the week 4-10 and enters this week hitting over .500 on the year.

- A .500 week at the plate pushed the batting average of Gull Lake’s Zac Pfennig to .421 for the season. The sophomore shortstop was 8-16 with a triple and home run, driving in seven and now has 13 RBIs for the year. The right-hander also picked up a win on the mound and has yet to permit an earned run.

- Brody Tesnow hit three doubles and two singles while also walking twice for Capac, scoring six runs and driving home four. The senior shortstop has now tallied nine runs for the season. 

- Will Latra had six hits and six RBIs for North Farmington. The  sophomore was 6-11 with two home runs and a double, scoring five runs.

- Sam King had 5 hits in 9 at bats, including 3 doubles, for Shepherd last week. The senior first baseman is a Mid-Michigan CC recruit.

PITCHING AND HITTING

Owen Delano had a no-hitter, 2 wins, and a home run in an impressive week for Huron.

The uncommitted junior retired six on strikes in a five-inning no-hitter against Grosse Ile and tossed 2.2 scoreless frames in an extra innings win versus Allen Park, fanning three, walking one and permitting three hits.

The Chiefs leadoff hitter also went 7-14 at the plate with two doubles, a triple and a home run, with seven RBIs and seven runs scored.

- Andrew Ryan surrendered his first earned run of the season in picking up his second victory of the 2026 campaign. The Kalamazoo signee beat D-1 No. 5 Allen Park with six innings of five-hit ball, striking out five and has now fanned 18 in 11 innings while giving up just two walks. The right-hander for Divine Child, the third-ranked team in Division 2, is 2-0 on the season. The senior also scored a dozen runs on the week, going 5-13 with a triple and four stolen bases. On the year, Ryan is batting .348 with 20 runs and 13 stolen bases.

- Alma's Ethan Helisnki went 9-16 at the plate last week including a double and a grand slam. The senior Alpena CC commit also stuck out 11 in 7 scoreless innings allowing 3 hits and no walks. 

- Tooker Harris garnered two wins on the mound during the week, striking out 24 in 16 innings with a 1.75 ERA and 0.875 WHIP.  The senior for Potterville also had a strong week batting going 8-19 with seven RBIs and five runs scored. Overall, Harris has a .519 OBP with 15 runs, 11 RBIs and three steals, while fanning 57 in 35.2 frames on the mound, standing 5-1 on the season with a 1.76 ERA and 0.897 WHIP.

- What a six-game performance it was for Isaac Lalonde of Rogers City. The junior struck out 29 in 10.1 one-hit innings, surrendering one run and five walks for the No. 10 team in Division 4. The Kellogg signee also hit two home runs, three doubles and a pair of triples in a 13-19 week with 16 runs and 15 RBIs.

- Farwell sophomore Mason Esterline was 13-21 with 14 runs scored, pounding out two doubles and a triple while walking three times and producing four RBIs. The left-hander was also dominant on the mound, fanning 19 in seven one-hit innings, not permitting a walk or an earned run. Esterline threw 77 of 94 pitches for strikes and now has 46 Ks in just 19.1 frames with a 3-1 record, giving up six hits, two walks and one earned run.

NO-HITTERS AND MORE

Standish-Sterling left-hander Landon Nixon struck out all 15 batters he faced in a five-inning perfect game against Ogemaw Heights.

Nixon, the fifth-rated 2027 southpaw in the state, is part of a dominant 1-2 punch with senior Toledo signee Preston Kann, who threw a no-hitter in game one of the double header with Ogemaw Heights.

On the year Kann, the 12th ranked senior in the state, has allowed 1 hit, striking out 26 in 14 scoreless innings while Nixon has struck out 30 in 13 innings allowing a lone earned run for the Panthers.

- Solomon Wegmeyer fired a no-hitter for West Ottawa in an OK Red series clinching win over Rockford. The uncommitted junior right-handed pitcher struck out four and walked four.

- Grand Rapids South Christian’s Luke Spoelma has tossed back-to-back no-hitters for the Sailors. The sophomore right-handed pitcher struck out four and walked three in a 7-0 five-inning game on April 14 and then fanned nine without a free pass in seven innings on April 21 with both outings coming in OK Gold matchups with Thornapple-Kellogg.

- Michael Bos threw a no-hitter at Harper Creek, with just two batters reaching base, one on an error and the other on a HBP. The junior right-hander for Grand Ledge recorded 10 strikeouts and now has 29 on the season in 22.3 innings with a 0.940 ERA. Bos has given up nine hits and three earned runs while limiting the opposition to a .117 batting average.

- There were a pair of no-hitters thrown in a doubleheader between Rockford and Traverse City Central. Sophomore right-hander Nolan Gilding struck out nine for Rockford in a 10-0 five-inning no-hitter in game one while Sophomore right-hander Jack Dewey tossed a no-hitter for Traverse City Central in a five-inning 12-0 second game. Gilding struck out nine while Dewey had one strikeout and two walks.

- West Virginia recruit Ryder Concannon took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a one-hitter to lead No. 18 Division 1 Saline past Notre Dame Prep. The 93rd-rated 2027 right-handed pitcher in the country fanned 11 and walked one in six innings against the No. 4 Division 2 team in Michigan.

- Cash Moczydlowsky, the fourth-ranked junior RHP in Michigan, retired 14 batters on strikes in a shutout performance versus Grosse Ile. The Toledo commit allowed two hits in six innings with no walks for New Boston Huron, the No. 2 team in Division 2.

- Nate Siler struck out 13 and did not walk a batter in a one-hit five-inning 12-0 victory over Marion. The 10th-rated junior RHP in Michigan has 45 strikeouts and just one walk on the season in 18.2 innings for unbeaten Sacred Heart.

- Evan Crossman threw a comple game shutout with 7 Ks as Father Gabriel Richard ended the week with a 3-0 win over top ranked D3 Jackson Lumen Christi. The senior two-way committed to Hope College on Friday
