Michigan Diamond Notes: April 27 - May 3

A perfect game was the highlight of the week for Logan Slimko.

The North Muskegon senior struck out 18 in a 2-0 win over Hart in a West Michigan Conference Rivers Division contest, surpassing the school record of 17 by Walt Bergen set in 1938. The perfect game is the first in school history.

In earning his fourth win of the season, Slimko also reached 300 strikeouts for his career and now has 315 in 159.1 innings, trailing only Justin Visconsti (369 in 1993-95) on the school’s all-time list.

The eighth-ranked 2026 right-handed pitcher in Michigan, who threw a no-hitter against Whitehall back on April 1, had 25 Ks for the week, allowing two earned runs and three hits in 11 innings.

For the season entering the week, the Dartmouth commit is 4-2 with a 2.57 ERA, surrendering 15 hits in 38 frames.

Slimko also scored five runs and swiped five bases in a 4-10 performance for the week that included three walks and a double. The No. 18 senior in the state is batting .368 for the season with an .889 OPS.

TWO-WAY SUCCESS

An 11-4 start to the season has Escanaba ranked 20th in Michigan in Division 2 and Brody Ison has led the way.

The uncommitted junior went 12-18 this past week with three triples, three doubles and a home run, walking three times while driving in 10, scoring six and swiping five bases.

For the year, Ison is 20-40 with six two-base hits, four three-base knocks, 17 RBIs, 15 runs and 13 stolen bases.

The right-hander also threw a four inning no-hitter against Negaunee and now has 25 Ks in 15 innings on the season.

- A win and a save in 3.1 innings is a small part of what Max Markham did during the week. The senior third baseman had two home runs and a pair of doubles in an 11-18 performance for Gull Lake, the No. 19 team in Division 1. The Kalamazoo Valley CC signee also had nine RBIs to push his season total to 28. Markham has a .510 average with eight doubles and four bombs.

- David Verduzco did not give up an earned run in 10 innings of six-hit pitching, fanning a dozen to win twice during the week. The senior right-hander is 5-1 overall with a 0.984 ERA, striking out 31 in 21.1 frames. The Kalamazoo College commit also had four doubles, a triple and home run at the plate, going 8-18 with seven RBIs and five steals. Verduzco is now carrying a batting average of .542 with 26 steals, 25 runs, 20 RBIs and 10 doubles for Hackett Catholic, the third-ranked Division 4 team.

- A 14-strikeout outing on the mound earned Hunter Hughes his third win in four decisions this season. The Center Line senior also went 9-11 at the dish with three doubles and a home run, driving in six. Hughes is hitting .625 on the season with six two-base knocks.

- No earned runs in 10 innings helped Bryce Smith pick up a pair of wins for Shepherd. The senior RHP struck out 11 and walked four while giving up five hits and is now 5-0 with 30 Ks in 27 innings of nine-hit pitching, surrendering just four earned runs. Smith is also batting .370 for the season with 21 runs, 15 steals and 11 walks after going 11-17 with a double and triple, seven runs, seven stolen bases and five RBIs.

- Fraser senior Jack Manzella blasted a grand slam to highlight a 6-12 week that included a double, pushing the season batting average to .410. The fourth-rated 2026 RHP in Michigan also tossed a two-hitter at Port Huron, giving up one run with 11 Ks. The Michigan State recruit stands 3-1 overall with a 0.40 ERA, striking out 35 in 18 innings. 

- Kellen Ford is having a big season for Hopkins on the west side. The Wright State recruit was 8-17 at the plate with a double, triple, two home runs and six RBI's. The senior right-hander also struck out 11 in 5 no-hit innings in a win over Calvin Christian.

- Brody Tesnow had five doubles and a triple in posting a 1.54 OPS in a 10-18 week that included a walk and two stolen bases. The Capac 2026 shortstop is now 16-40 with a 1.16 OPS, 16 RBIs and eight doubles. The senior right-hander is also getting it done pitching, throwing a complete game to hand Reese its first loss of the season. For the week, Tesnow fanned 15 in 11 innings with one walk and now has 36 Ks in 26.2 frames.

- Sophomore Zac Kruper was 7-14 with a pair of doubles at the plate for Anchor Bay and also picked up a win in relief against St. Clair allowing a run on four hits, striking out four in four innings.

- Sammy Major threw a 74-pitch complete game with six strikeouts for Lake Orion while also going 6-12 at the plate for the week with a double, three runs and two RBIs. The sophomore has a 1.12 ERA on the season with 14 Ks in 18 frames and a 2-1-1 record.

- The Sacred Heart 1-2 punch of Brady Davis and Nathan Siler continue to lead the Irish. Davis, a senior left-hander, a frequent name on the Diamond Notes with the bat this spring, had a standout week on the mound striking out 19 allowing just 3 hits in 9 scoreless innings. Siler threw 12 innings on the mound striking out 21 on the week. The uncommitted junior allowed a lone hit in a win over Montabella and took a tough luck loss allowing 2 runs in a 2-1 defeat to D2 Charlotte. Siler was also 8-13 with eight runs and nine RBI's.

STICKS HEATING UP

A 7-15 week actually lowered the batting average for Kaleb Nielson, who had five runs, three RBIs and two steals, hitting a triple and a home run while also walking once for Williamston, the No. 5 team in Michigan in Division 2.

The senior outfielder is hitting .556 on the year with a 1.352 OPS. The Grand Rapids CC commit has 28 runs, 17 RBIs, 13 walks and 19 stolen bases, with five doubles among the seven extra-base hits for the Williamston senior.

- Nine hits and nine RBIs from Max Gerl helped Hackett Catholic Prep go 5-0 for the week. The senior shortstop went 9-17 with a double, triple and home run and is now batting .519 with 10 doubles, three triples and one bomb to go along with 25 RBIs and 24 runs scored for the No. 3 team in Division 4.

- Jerryd Scheurer is leading the way for defending state champion Portland St. Patrick. The uncommitted junior went 9-15 with four doubles, a triple and 7 runs scored last week. Scheurer is hitting .618 with 23 runs and 17 SB on the spring.

- Lincoln Levy had a 1.424 OPS and .600 OBP for the week for Parma Western, going 9-17 with two doubles and a home run, driving in five and stealing four bases. The left-handed hitting junior first baseman is now carrying a .475 average with a .543 OBP and .763 slugging percentage, pounding out nine two-base hits and a pair of HRs, scoring 23 times while stealing nine bags.

- Six runs scored and six stolen bases were part of a 9-18 week by Woodhaven center fielder Dante Perry, who reached base 13 times in 22 plate appearances that included four walks. The uncommitted senior is averaging .448 with a .570 OBP, .597 slugging percentage and 1.167 OPS, scoring 29 runs with 19 walks, 16 RBIs and 20 steals for the No. 5 Division 1 squad.

- Logan Wade reached base in nine of 10 plate appearances for Belleville with a double and four walks. The 5-6 week has the senior catcher at .359 on the season with a 1.293 OPS, including 11 extra-base hits and nine RBIs.

- Senior shortstop JD Myszenski upped his season total of RBIs to 18 with 10 during a 6-12 week that included a home run and four runs scored. The Adrian College recruit now has a .357 batting average with 11 runs scored for Lake Orion.

- Mendon's Brayden Crites and Liam Smith both had huge weeks at the plate for the Hornets. Crites, a senior Glen Oaks CC recruit, was 10-13 with 3 doubles and 8 RBI in 4 games while Smith, a freshman, went 11-16 with a double, two triples, a home run and 11 RBI.

- Carson Spica was 9-20 at the plate last week as Traverse City Central went 6-0. The uncommitted junior SS hit four doubles, a triple, drove in four and scored 6 runs out of the leadoff spot for the Trojans.

- The trio of Nolan Zeien, Teegan Duffy and Han McDonald all had big week's at the plate for Sacred Heart. Zeien went 7-14 with 12 runs, Duffy was 8-18 with 11 runs and McDonald went 7-16 with five runs and 7 RBI's.

- Sophomore third baseman Vaughn Helmer was 8-13 with a double to push his season batting average up to .378 for Lakeview.

Pitching Well

Ethan Campbell threw his second no-hitter in two weeks for Zeeland East.

The junior left-hander struck out 18 and walked one in a 14-0 blanking of Hamilton. The uncommitted southpaw faced 22 batters in the game and threw 60 of 88 pitches for strikes.

The 6-4 215-pound lefty threw a no-hitter against Holland Christian back on April 21.

- Mattawan senior left-hander Maxx VanAntwerp struck out 13 in a no-hitter for Mattawan in a 8-0 win against St. Joseph. The Kalamazoo Valley recruit faced 23 batters in the contest with base runners coming via HBP in the first and a walk in the 7th.

- Gerrit Koot threw a no-hitter for Mason is a 11-2 win over Tecumseh last week. The junior-righthander struck out six and walked none in the outing.

- Bay City Western's Jimmey Sequin fired a four-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Midland, striking out 10 and not walking a batter. The sophomore stands 5-0 on the year with just one earned run allowed in 29.2 innings, giving up 14 hits and just four walks with a 0.24 ERA, picking up wins against the likes of Brother Rice, Mount Pleasant and Midland Dow.

- Brody and Andrew Parrott are forming a nice one-two punch on the hill for Parma Western. The junior right-handers both went 2-0 on the week, Brody not allowing an earned run in 11 innings of four-hit ball with 24 Ks and three walks. Andrew surrendered three earned runs and nine hits in 12 frames with 21 strikeouts and no free passes. On the season, Brody is 6-0 with 55 Ks in 31.2 innings and a 1.105 ERA, giving up 18 hits and 15 walks while limiting opponents to a .162 average. Andrew stands 4-1, fanning 40 and permitting seven free passes in 30.2 frames with a 3.196 ERA. 

- Will Paulus picked up a win against Division 1 Greenville, called by Harbor Light Christian head coach Lloyd Swadling “the program’s biggest win” for a school with an enrollment of 106. The senior went 1-1 on the week with 14 strikeouts in 10 innings of seven-hit pitching, walking one and giving up three earned runs. For the year, Paulus is 4-1 with a 0.773 ERA, totaling 44 Ks in 27 innings, allowing 11 hits and seven free passes for the 12-4 Division 4 squad.

- Jaxon Clark hit career strikeout number 100 against Mancelona in game one of the Johannesburg Tournament. The Rudyard senior has 23 strikeouts in 23 innings on the season. That wasn't the only highlight on the mound as sophomore trio of Bryce Mitchell, Kane Savoie and Lukas VanSloten comined to throw a no-hitter agaisnt Onaway.
