CENTRAL CATHOLIC VS SANDY (4.30.26)

Last week we were on-site for some Mt. Hood Conference action with Central Catholic visiting Sandy for their first of 2 match-ups. This one started out tight as Sandy jumped out to an early lead after 3. But the Rams would get the offense going late and leave the yard with a 5-2 victory.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC

For the visitors, they got a huge effort on the mound from #1 ranked 2028 prospect Sam Smith. The athletic southpaw finished with a final line of 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, ER, 0 BB and 13 K. He fired 65 strikes in his 93 pitches and only faced 4 over the minimum.

Smith works from the stretch with an easy, simple operation that helps him stay consistent and fill up the zone. The arm path is quick and easy with late extension out front and an athletic sequence through release. An exceptional athlete with plus plus speed in the OF. His body control and twitch translates to the mound, making him one of the most impactful 2-way prospects in any class.

At the dish, Smith helped his own cause going 1-4 with an RBI on the day.

Several other young, uncommitted prospects left their mark on this game as well.

‘29 OF Jett Jones finished 2-2, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI. His RBI single in T3 helped open up the scoring and gave CC a brief 1-0 lead. He has very few moving parts in the swing offensively. Uses a lower leg lift to gather into a short forward stride that syncs up with his hand load. He slots the barrel just below his rear shoulder before firing the hands through the zone. Barrel shows some lift out front with a slightly uphill path.

Some uncommitted juniors also made an impact in this one. ‘27 OF Servando Lopez had a 2B and run scored as he went 1-2 on the day with a HBP.

‘27 Luke Hanna had a multi-hit day going 2-4 out of the clean-up spot. ‘26 SS Spencer Ames delivered a big RBI double in top 5 that tied the game at 2-2 as he finished 1-4 on the day. Overall there were contributions up and down the Rams line-up in this one as 6 players added up for 8 total hits.

SANDY

It was a tough assignment for the Sandy hitters in this one as they faced a strong lefty arm who was dialed in for this one. They only tallied 3 total hits with 3 players contributing 1 apiece.

‘27 1B Henry Scott and ‘26 OF Tallon Davis each had 1 hit plus a run scored in the contest. ‘27 C Gage Schilperoort added the 3rd base knock.

On the mound, Sandy got a quality start from ‘26 RHP Carter Boyes. The stocky righty worked with a deliberate-paced wind-up into a 3/4 slot release and tighter arm action. Landed the breaking ball with ease and effectively changed speeds throughout. Had an efficient start in this one early and just ran into a little trouble late as the line-up turned over for that 3rd time.

Sandy gave the ball to ‘27 Brady Andrews for the final frame and he went 3 up, 3 down with a K for the quick inning.
