PNW Staff

The Oregon Scouting Blog provides insider information and scouting notes from the Prep Baseball Staff during the OSAA season. This running blog will feature information on underclass prospects, unsigned seniors, draft prospects, and anything else that is notable. We will provide a wide range of information, including player evaluations, velocities, pop times, home to first times, and more.

The latest blog catches up on action across both the 6A and 4A levels. We start things off with a low scoring and tense 1-0 game between visiting Forest Grove and the home squad Sherwood Bowmen

FOREST GROVE VS SHERWOOD (4.22.26)

Forest Grove

This low scoring affair between Pacific Conference foes was a fast paced, low scoring battle with dominant pitching on both sides. In the end, Forest Grove would prevail 1-0 on the strength of a massive CG effort from one of the top uncommitted juniors in the state.

Uncommitted ‘27 LHP Kevin Carrieri was the story in this one for Forest Grove. Strongly built at 6’0, 200 lbs, the southpaw has 2-way potential with his ability to swing the bat and handle both 1B and the OF on defense. The L/L profile makes him even more enticing for the next level.

On the mound, it was a dominant and efficient performance from start to finish. In 7 innings, Carrieri allowed only 3 hits with 3 BB and 8 punchouts. He only faced 4 batters over the minimum and he fired 61 of his 91 pitches for strikes.

Pitches with a simple, repeatable delivery and has some cross action in his landing. The arm action is a tighter, more compact path after he separates and then gets late extension out front through his release. Ball comes out from a ¾ slot and does give the appearance of hiding it well on hitters. Breaking ball played well off the FB in this outing. He can really elevate when he needs to and also has the ability to drive the ball in on a RHH.

He also helped himself in a big way at the dish with a crucial RBI single in the top of the 5th inning that would ultimately score the only run of the contest. Finished 1-3 on the day with the RBI.

There wasn’t much else going for the Vikings on offense in this one with only 5 total hits spread out amongst 5 players. All singles.

Sophomore C Harper Crowell had an impressive showing and is a prospect to follow. Seeing a sophomore hitting clean-up and starting at C definitely grabs your attention before the game even starts. Crowell went 1-3 and showed strength at the point of contact with an easy, balanced swing.

Overall, this Forest Grove roster is extremely young with several major contributors who will be back next season.

SHERWOOD

For the home team, the Bowmen had a really tough day on offense as they could only generate 3 singles in the game.

‘28 C Drew Schmidt has impressed at multiple events in the past and he gave a strong look in this game. Facing a tough left on left match-up, he went 1-3 with a sharp line drive single into CF. A stout, physical athlete with some speed. Schmidt has the ideal L/R profile that you want to see at the catching position and tools to carry him to the next level. The bat speed comes easily. He puts a tight turn on the ball and creates his acceleration from the ground up. The hands fire late and the swing path covers depth in the zone.

Senior Landon Brown added another hit for the Bowmen from the leadoff spot. Going 1-2 with a BB. The Lower Columbia commit also got the start on the mound and was dialed in for his 5 innings of work. He allowed 3 hits, ER, BB with 3 K.

Brown was a standout arm at the 2025 PNW State Games last summer with an exceptional FB/CB combination that can generate a ton of swing and miss. The FB plays up in the zone with carry/ride from a lower release. The has late depth and lateral break while coming out of hand with FB intent.

After Brown, junior Kellen Martin added 2 scoreless innings with 2 K for Sherwood.

ST. HELENS VS TILLAMOOK (4.23.26)

ST. HELENS

Pitching dominated in this 4A matchup between Cowapa League foes Tillamook and St. Helens.

For the home team, the Lions, they had a huge complete game performance from ‘27 Sawyer Scales.

The Junior RHP finished with a final line of 7 IP, 3 H, ER, 4 BB, 11 K. Scales has a basic, mechanically sound operation with clean direction towards the catcher. Gathers with a medium height leg lift and stays in his back hip well. Shorter length stride speeds up his arm path and the ball really jumps out of hand. Commanded SL well as his main secondary with an understanding of how to expand the zone when ahead.

There wasn’t a ton of offensive output from St. Helens in this one but they made their hits count and capitalized when they could. Senior SS Javon Holder led the team with 2 hits and 2 runs scored.

Sophomore 1B Christian Rund was highly productive with his ABs in this game. Finished 1-3 but drove in 3 of the 4 total runs scored on the day. Bigger framed corner bat has a high waisted frame with leverage and a balanced swing at the plate.

For Tillamook, they Cheesemakers weren’t able to get the offense going in this one with only 3 total hits.

Uncommitted ‘27 INF Kevin Hurliman had the best day at the plate for his squad as he went 2-2 with their lone RBI and added a BB in his other AB. Hurliman has some size and strength in the frame while hitting from a wider base with a flat approach through the zone. Uses a toe tap load in his sequence while keeping the hands tight and ready just above his rear shoulder.

Senior SS Jakoby Goss added the only other hit for Tillamook and scored their run.

On the mound, uncommitted ‘27 P/INF Wrigley Percy was impressive despite the loss. Across 6 full innings he allowed 6 H, 4 ER, 2 BB and racked up 12 K. Generated consistent swing/miss throughout with a FB/CB combination that attacked hitters north & south to expand the zone. Very quick hand speed out font at release with an athletic decel and strong lead leg block.
