After our largest preseason showcase turnout of all time, the Prep Baseball Kansas staff has once again updated the state’s 2028 rankings. Following a massive mid-fall update, we made more substantial adjustments as we head deeper into the season.

While the top of our rankings remains mostly in-tact with some minor shuffleing of players who were already in the top 20, this update features several newcomers and notable risers after strong showings throughout the preseason circuit. Below, we take a deeper look at the movement within the class and highlight standouts from the preseason showcase circuit.

Lucas Kamerzell RHP / OF / Blue Valley, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 8 / POS: 3 Kamerzell jumps over 15 spots into the top 10 after showing a velo jump to 88 at the MOKAN Preseason All-State and throwing some big innings at the varsity level for one of the top teams in the state.

Cole Harris C / 1B / Shawnee Mission South, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 24 / POS: 4 A top performer at the Engaged Athletics scout day, Harris jumps nearly 14 spots. The right-handed hitter shows levers and future power potential. Defensively, Harris is quickly developing as a catcher.

Isaac Thompson SS / RHP / De Soto, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 25 / POS: 10 Up 25 spots thanks to major leaps on both sides of the ball. As a position player, Thompson had a breakout performance at the MOKAN Preseason All-State, showing some impressive pop. He has also become a middle-of-the-order bat for the Wildcats this spring. On the mound, Thompson shows a repeatable delivery featuring a fastball into the mid-80s.

Cooper Abernathy RHP / 1B / Olathe East, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 29 / POS: 7 Abernathy rises over 30 spots after a breakout performance on the mound at the KC Preseason ID, where he featured a fastball up to 87 with tilt. The two-way athlete also showed thump from the right side with near 100 exit velo.

Jalen Lawhead LHP / OF / Eisenhower, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 33 / POS: 1 Another two-way shooting up our rankings, Lawhead was most impressive on the mound at the Wichita Preseason ID, where he featured a fastball up to 85.

Deuce Enright LHP / OF / Olathe East, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 37 / POS: 3 A two-way athlete who enters our rankings inside the top 50 after we got our first look at him at the MOKAN Preseason All-State. It was the left-hander's work on the mound that really shined, where he featured a fastball up to 83 mph.

Bryton Baty SS / 3B / Trinity Academy, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 42 / POS: 14 Baty stood out immediately with polished baseball actions at the Wichita Preseason ID. One of the fastest players in the state, he will be a high-follow prospect as he adds strength.

Jace Dreher C / 1B / Hays, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 45 / POS: 6 The left-handed hitting backstop makes his debut in the top 50 after showing big pop at the KC Preseason ID.

Davin Koontz C / OF / Leavenworth, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 48 / POS: 8 The left-handed hitter showed a clean swing with juice from the left side as well. Defensively, Koontz shows a strong arm and will be a must-see prospect as he continues to polish his game behind the dish.

Cole Haynes LHP / OF / Maize South, KS / 2028 Rankings  StateRank: 56 / POS: 5 The 6-foot-4 athlete showed a sky-high ceiling at the Wichita Preseason ID. The left-handed hitter has levers and athleticism and is a high-follow as he develops his swing.
