North Carolina Class of 2028: Post-Summer Rankings Update
The summer evaluation period is complete, and Prep Baseball North Carolina has updated and expanded the Class of 2028 Rankings following one of the busiest stretches of the year.
This update includes evaluations from tournament play, Prep Baseball events, organizational Scout Days, the Prep Baseball Future Games, and the Tobacco Road State Games on August 15-16. With thousands of innings of baseball evaluated throughout the spring and summer, our scouting staff was able to update a large portion of the 2028 database while continuing to identify players emerging across the state.
The result is an expansion from the Top 200 to the Top 225 players in North Carolina, with 41 fresh faces entering the rankings.

A Big Summer for the 2028 Class
Much of the summer built toward two major events on the Prep Baseball North Carolina calendar: the Future Games and the inaugural Tobacco Road State Games.
The Future Games remains the premier uncommitted recruiting event in the country. This year's event brought 495 college coaches to LakePoint Sports in Georgia, where Team North Carolina finished the week with a perfect 3-0 record. Beyond the wins, the event provided another opportunity to evaluate some of the state's top 2028 prospects against high-level talent from across the country.
The summer concluded with the inaugural Tobacco Road State Games in Charlotte. The event sold out in less than six weeks and assembled some of North Carolina's top prospects for a workout and two days of game action. Several players used the event to put an exclamation point on strong summers, while others provided our staff with additional information that impacted this rankings update.
The Rankings Process
Prep Baseball's rankings are built from player grades developed through live scouting, event evaluations, measurable data, video, and continued follow-up. Scouts grade individual tools before assigning an overall player grade along with a confidence rating based on the depth of information available on each prospect.
Much of the rankings process is conducted blind, with player names, schools, and commitments removed as grades are sorted. Identifying information is then reintroduced as the scouting staff works through the final stages of the rankings.
The process is never finished. Players develop, tools change, and additional evaluations provide greater clarity. Our scouting staff will continue to evaluate, identify, and adjust player grades throughout the fall, ultimately leading to future rankings updates.
By the Numbers
- 225 players now ranked in North Carolina's Class of 2028
- 41 newcomers enter the rankings
- 89 of the Top 100 were updated through the most recent evaluation cycle
- 495 college coaches attended the 2026 Future Games
- Team NC finished the Future Games 3-0
- 6 players from North Carolina's 2028 class have already announced college commitments
Previewing the Top 10
North Carolina continues to show considerable star power and depth at the top of the class. Team NC's unbeaten run at the Future Games provided one glimpse into that talent, but the depth extends well beyond one roster or event.
Prep Baseball scouts were able to update evaluations on a majority of the players in the 2028 rankings database, while also adding many new names to track. 89 of the Top 100 players received an evaluation and updated player grade during this cycle, creating additional confidence throughout the rankings and allowing the staff to further separate an extremely talented group.
North Carolina's top two 2028 prospects are scheduled to compete in the Prep Baseball All-American Game in Miami this September. Their selections give North Carolina three players in the prestigious national event, another indication of the high-end talent currently coming through the state.

At the same time, recruiting is only beginning for this group. Communication between college coaches and 2028 prospects officially opened on August 1, and only six players in the state's rankings have committed to this point. That number should grow throughout the fall as many of the state's top prospects complete visits and work through their decisions.
The current recruiting environment also rewards patience. Even as commitments begin to come off the board, we expect a significant portion of North Carolina's 2028 class to remain available deep into the process, with more than half of the class potentially still pursuing their college opportunities as late as December 2027.
What's Next
The rankings release is only the beginning of our post-summer coverage.
In the coming week, Prep Baseball North Carolina will dive deeper into the updated Class of 2028 Rankings, highlighting newcomers who forced their way onto the board, risers who elevated their player grades, and names to know throughout an increasingly deep class.
With recruiting officially underway, commitments will also begin appearing throughout the rankings as players make their college decisions.
