PA Summer Top Prospect Games - Session 1: Quick Hits

On August 11th, our staff hosted the PA Summer Top Prospect Games - Session 1, at Penn State University in Centre County, PA. Over 40 players made it out to this event, providing us with updated looks and a new list of players to follow in Pennsylvania.

We begin our post-event content today with our quick hits from the event, highlighting some of the notable players from the day and their numbers.

Position Players  

+ SS Ryan Wheeler (Devon Prep, 2029) was one of the best overall athletes from the PA Top Prospect Games - Session 1. The 6-foot-1, 164-pound left-handed hitting shortstop led the event with a 28.6 inch vertical jump. His 1.65 10-yard split was the second best and his 1.79 RSI was the fourth highest from the event. The shortstop’s 86 mph arm across the infield was also the second highest mark. Wheeler’s bat really showed out during the live at-bats portion. With a 96.2 mph exit velocity, the lefty crushed four barrels during his at bats. Wheeler’s swing is very fluid and rhythmic. He displayed a whole field approach, driving one to left field, lining one back up the middle in a left-on-left matchup, and then lined one through the four-hole. With his frame, there is power to come for Wheeler.

 + SS David Falcone (The Haverford School, 2029), a 5-foot-11, 170-pound shortstop, had a strong showing at the plate with a three barrel day from the left side. He posted the sixth highest exit velocity at 97.7 mph. The shortstop demonstrated quick bat speed with the third highest bat speed average at 73.2. During live at bats he displayed pull side ability with a strong lower half that drives his short, uphill swing path. Falcone crushed one to deep center before pulling one into the right-center gap. For his final barrel, he adjusted to an offspeed pitch to pull one down the first base line. The shortstop had the third highest infield arm, with an 84 mph throw. 

+ 3B Broc Bryan (Warren Area, 2028), a strong and athletic infielder, demonstrated his power ability at the PA Top Prospect Games - Session 1. During batting practice, Bryan had the fourth highest max exit velocity at 98.6 and max distance with 345 feet. He was also tied for the fourth highest hand speed at 21.2. The 6-foot-1, 192.3-pound primary third baseman produced easy pop with his strength during live at bats, crushing two balls to both gaps. Bryan’s athleticism was also on full display. He was tied for the highest 10-yard split at 1.64, had the third highest RSI at 1.91, and his 24.6 vertical was the fourth best. Across the diamond, his 80 mph arm was the fifth best mark from the event. Bryan’s true power and bat speed makes him one to watch in the 2028 class. 

+ 3B Lawson Wetzel (Coudersport Area, 2028) is a massive 6-foot-5, 225.1-pound primary third baseman and was one of the best pure hitters from the event. He showcased the highest max exit velo and average, at 101.4 and 95.6, respectively. He powered the second best max distance with a 351-foot shot. Wetzel’s hands really stand out with his swing. He had the second highest max hand speed at 23.3 and the third highest average at 21.3. His max bat speed of 79.3 and average bat speed of 73.7 were also the second best marks. His hands work level to the ball while he generates extension at impact. Wetzel’s frame makes him an intimidating opponent in the box who generates loud contact with ease. From the infield, his 83 mph throw was tied for the fourth highest. With his size and power, Wetzel will be on the rise in the class of 2028.

Two-Ways

+ LHP/OF Dylan Koehler (Bethel Park, 2029), a left-handed-pitcher and switch-hitting outfielder/first baseman, was an impressive two-way performer. The 5-foot-11, 151.5-pound switch hitter had a strong day in the box and on the mound. The toolsy prospect with an active lower half posted a 92 max exit velocity from the right side and 94 from the left side. Koehler, a wiry bat, generates leverage at impact. On the mound, the southpaw demonstrated good command of his fastball, including a curveball and slider as well. The fastball ranged 76-80 mph, topping out at 81 mph and 2216 rpm as Koehler pitched deeper into his outing. The curveball, 67-69 mph, and slider, 67-70 mph, each generated late depth to keep hitters unbalanced. 

Pitchers

+ RHP Nico Sowers (Pittsburgh Central Catholic, 2029) had one of the most impressive outings at Penn State. With a 6-foot-3, 190.9-pound frame, Sowers delivers heat. The fastball ranged 85-87 mph, topping out at 88 mph. Pairing his frame and heat, the fastball plays up well in the zone. Sowers also features a curveball and splitter that are both 79-82 mph. The curveball has a sharp drop that deceives hitters when followed or prefaced with a high fastball. The splitter showed solid depth with potential to be another putaway pitch. Given Sowers’ frame and solid three-pitch mix, he will be one to follow in the Keystone state’s 2029 class. 

+ LHP Kyron Fields (Conemaugh Valley JS, 2028), a 6-foot-2, 169.8-pound left handed pitcher, delivered a strong performance in the PA Top Prospect Games - Session 1. The southpaw utilizes a four-pitch mix featuring a fastball, curveball, slider, and changeup. His fastball ranged 80-83 mph and topped out at 84 mph. The curveball sat 70-71 mph with the slider ranging 73-76 mph. Fields used a good mix of fastballs and breaking balls to keep hitters off balanced. In a left-on-left matchup, Fields led off with a high fastball for a swing and a miss, a slider high and away for a strike, and then dropped a curveball in the dirt for another swing and a miss. The southpaw will be an intriguing name to track in the 2028 class. 

+ RHP Mason Hill (Central Bucks-East, 2028) is a 5-foot-9, 155.6-pound right handed pitcher with a high quality four-pitch mix. Hill flashed his potential in his outing at Penn State. His fastball ranged 83-86 with a fluid, lively arm action in his delivery. The fastball also spins well with a 2375 max rpm and an average rpm of 2314. His sinker sat 84-85 with 2386 max rpm, creating sharp sink action. The rising junior’s slider is very advanced. Ranging 77-80 mph, Hill’s advanced ability to spin his pitches flashed with a max rpm of 2732, averaging out at 2669 rpm. The slider also features late horizontal movement. The changeup is another advanced out-pitch for the right hander that ranges 75-76 mph. With a good ability to locate east and west, Hill is another arm to follow.
