Changes Made In Baseball State Tournament

The schedule for the State Baseball Tournament on June 11-14 has been determined by the OHSAA with some changes from a year ago when the sport initially expanded to seven divisions.

The biggest change is that there will be eight semifinal games played on Thursday, four at 7 17 Credit Union Park (formerly Canal Park) in Akron and four at Thurman Munson Stadium in Canton. Last year there were just two games played at Canal Park on Thursday and none at Thurman Munson.

“We ran into a rain delay last year,” explained Tim Stried, Director of Media Relations with the Ohio High School Athletic Association. “Any time a tourney is affected by rain it causes the need to make changes, so this year we decided to frontload the schedule. We’re only scheduled to play one game on Sunday, so we’re keeping that open in case there’s a rain delay earlier in the weekend.” 

Division VI will play semifinal games at Credit Union at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 11 with Division I semis at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thurman Munson will feature Division V semifinals at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. with Division III semis to follow at 4 and 7 p.m.

Unlike the previous year, this time around four state final games will be held on Friday with the eight winners from the four divisions that played on Thursday playing championship contests at 7 17 Credit Union Park on June 12. D-VI will play at 10 a.m., D-V at 1 p.m., D-I at 4 p.m. and D-III at 7 p.m.

While those are going on, Division VII will have semifinal games at Thurman Munson at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday with Division II semis slated for 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. It marks the second year in a row that D-II semis are not in Akron.

“Our goal is to rotate divisions for semifinals, so one year the semis are in Akron and the next in Canton,” Stried said. “The challenge is that only three divisions can play semis in Akron and we have seven divisions. So Division II will be the one division that two years in row will be playing in Canton. Next year in 2027, Division II will play their semis in Akron.”

If this year’s tournament stays on schedule, there will be no games at Thurman Munson after Friday, though it is available to be used on Saturday should mother nature cause the need to use it.

Saturday’s slate at Credit Union will feature Division IV semifinals at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. followed by the Division VII finals at 4 p.m. and Division II finals at 7 p.m.

The lone game on Sunday will be the D-IV championship game at 10 a.m.
