Vais has been a regular on our tools list because he’s one of the top overall athletes we saw in Kansas City last season. The Texas Longhorns commit impacts the game in multiple ways whether it’s in center field, at the plate, or on the mound.
His slider is one of the toughest off-speed pitches we evaluated all year, thanks to the combination of velocity and spin. Thrown around 80 MPH and averaging 2,700+ RPMs, it’s a firm breaking ball that’s difficult for hitters to adjust to. At last year’s Future Games, the pitch sat 79.8–81.4 MPH, averaged 2,764 RPMs (topping at 2,931), and showed an average of -14.7 inches of horizontal movement with -4 inches of induced vertical break. Impressive movement for the velocity he throws it at.
