TEAM OUTLOOK

Monterey heads into the 2026 season looking to build upon a CIF Central Coast Section Division 5 runner-up finish. After a 12–18 campaign in 2025, head coach Michael Groves returns a solid core built around pitching and defense. The Toreadores bring back six starters and five pitchers, giving the staff experience and continuity in key spots. That returning depth on the mound should allow Monterey to mix and match arms throughout the year, while a defense-first identity figures to keep them competitive in tight games.

Several uncommitted upperclassmen will be leaned on to set the tone, including two-way talent INF/RHP Conner Rose (2026) and corner bat 1B/3B Tyson Beyah (2026). Behind the plate, C/RHP Johnny Money (2027) adds value as a backstop who can also contribute on the mound, while 3B/RHP Tristan Trego (2027) brings a similar two-way presence from the hot corner. C/INF Gino Grammatico (2027) offers flexibility across the infield and behind the dish, and OF Matteo Marotta-Gallegos (2027) gives Monterey an athletic option in the outfield. The Toreadores also feature a promising underclass group led by LHP/OF Ryan LeMaire (2028), INF Greyson Everett (2028), INF Anthony Esquivel (2028), and OF Aarush Marpu (2028).

With an experienced pitching staff and a defense-oriented approach, Monterey will look to convert close games into wins in 2026. If the returning lineup continues to develop and the young talent pushes for varsity roles, the Toreadores have the pieces in place to show noticeable improvement in the regular season and continue their postseason success.

Quote from the Coach

“We’re optimistic, as we return 13 players from a 17 man roster. With this continuity and experience, we expect to be competitive throughout the season.”
