2026 KSHSAA Team Preview: Tonganoxie Chieftains
February 13, 2026
The Kansas high school baseball season kicks off on Mar. 19, opening day for regular season action under KSHSAA regulations. Leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2026 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, counting down to the official Prep Baseball Kansas Preseason Power 25 Rankings.
Perennially, we’ve submitted a preseason questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.
Our 2026 preseason coverage continues today.

Head Coach: Mitch Loomis (15 years)
Classification: 4A
2025 Record (Finish): 16-12 (Lost in First Round of State)
2026 SEASON OUTLOOK
No. of Returning Position Players: 6
No. of Returning Pitchers: 2
Top Returners:
- Baron Dohrn (2026) - C, R/R
- Baron has been a 2-year starter on 2 state tournament teams. Commands a talented pitching staff, plus receiver and thrower. Looking for a offensive jump after hitting .276 last season.
- Merek Davenport (2026) - P/1B, L/L
- Kansas City Kansas CC commit
- Merek is a returning all-league/all-state selection at pitcher. 6-2 last season with a 1.4 ERA. 6'6 lefty that will be one of the best arms in 4A.
- Landon Bartlett (2027) - P/3B
- Landon went 3-3 with a 3.2 ERA as a sophomore in a breakout year. He has added some serious size and weight in the offseason and will move into the #2 spot in the rotation with big expectations.
- Everett Holland (2027) - SS/P
- Everett filled a utility/DH role last season batting .300 as a sophomore. He will move into the starting everyday SS role this season
Top Newcomers:
- Evan Beal (2026) - OF/3B
- Evan is coming into his first season of varsity baseball for us, but has had a productive offseason playing high level summer baseball. A great kid that will contribute this spring.
Key Players Lost:
- Brock Gibbs - Park
- Piercen Eccles
- Talon Langford
Coach’s Insight: “This teams starting pitching will allow us to be competitive with anyone most days. A very athletic and experienced defense should complement our staff as well. We will have to find middle of the lineup bats that can produce runs. This team doesn't have the speed of last years team, so finding guys who can drive the ball consistently will be our biggest hurdle to cross. We will also have to have new arms step up out of the bullpen and late week starters. A lot of unproven there.” – Mitch Loomis, head coach
