2026 North Carolina High School Baseball Previews

As the 2026 high school baseball season approaches, Prep Baseball is proud to roll out our annual North Carolina High School Baseball Previews, spotlighting programs from across the state.

Information for these previews was gathered directly by Prep Baseball’s scouting staff, along with detailed preseason questionnaires submitted by high school coaches statewide. Coaches provided insight into their returning players, team strengths and weaknesses, offseason development, and overall outlook heading into the spring. Every program that completed the questionnaire will receive a team preview as part of this series.

The goal of the North Carolina High School Baseball Previews is simple: highlight high school baseball across the state and bring attention to impact players at every level. From established contenders and defending champions to emerging programs and under-the-radar rosters, this series is designed to give readers a comprehensive look at the teams and athletes shaping the 2026 season.

Previews will be released by region, with two regions published each day, making it easy to follow along and track storylines as opening day approaches. Each team breakdown will include an overview, projected strengths and areas to watch, and key players to follow — with an emphasis on prospects making noise within Prep Baseball’s coverage.

We appreciate the time and effort from the coaches who contributed to this project and look forward to covering what promises to be another competitive and talent-filled spring across North Carolina.

Stay tuned as we begin rolling out the 2026 previews.

Region 1 & 2 Previews

Region 1 and Region 2 of North Carolina are situated in the eastern side, featuring players from the northeast part of the state and the coastal area.

“Excited about the potential of this team if they can continue to compete on the mound and find their way defensively and offensively. ” – Corey B Skinner, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Ayden-Griffen continues to establish itself as a consistent winner, posting 15+ wins in three straight seasons and finishing one game shy of 20 wins last year. While the Chargers graduated their top two hitters, the return of Williams and Roland provides a foundation for the lineup as they step into larger roles.

On the mound, Ayden-Griffen returns over 110 innings pitched, losing just one arm from last season’s staff. If the pitching group can improve its command and limit walks, the Chargers have the experience and depth to position themselves for a playoff run this spring.

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Bear Grass Charter enters the season as a proven winning program, sustaining success for more than a decade. The Bears did graduate their top arm, but the staff’s overall depth should allow them to remain competitive on the mound.

Offensively, Bear Grass replaces its top four hitters, yet the roster returns multiple players with varsity at-bats, easing the transition. If the lineup can come together and provide enough production, the Bears have the pitching and defense in place to continue their long-standing winning tradition.

Top Seniors:
Tucker Anderson
Conner Berry
Hunter Layton

Top Juniors:
Coleton Newbern
Hayden Willoughby
Brody Brannon

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
D.H. Conley enters the season as one of the most consistently successful programs in the state and has the makeup to compete for a state championship. The Vikings return a treasure trove of arms, bringing back nearly the entire pitching staff after losing just 25 innings from last year’s team. Tucker Anderson and Conner Berry headline a deep, high-end group that gives Conley a clear advantage on the mound.

Offensively, there are some questions early, and Coach Mills will test the lineup with a challenging schedule, but the upside is evident. Ethan Stewart, a sophomore, has a chance to develop into a special player, while the roster as a whole is physical, athletic, and deep. With elite pitching and strong defense, D.H. Conley has the tools to be a real problem across the state this spring.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Team Strengths:
Strong work ethic this offseason.

Top Seniors:
Reed Kennedy - Pitcher - Signed to Pitt Community College

Top Juniors:
Connor Kessler - UTL

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Farmville Central enters the season after a 13–9–1 campaign in 2025 that featured multiple broken offensive records, but the Jaguars face significant turnover after graduating seven starters. The focus this spring shifts toward development and establishing new roles.

Senior leaders Chase Felton (IF/P) and Reed Kennedy (UTL/P) provide experience on both sides of the ball, while Conner Kessler (OF/P, JR) adds versatility. Underclassmen Percy Stancil, Ryan Albritton, and Lucas Neely will be relied upon as they gain varsity reps.

With a strong work ethic and motivated young core, Farmville Central will look to grow through the season, using 2025 as a building year toward 2026.

“This team will be younger than last year but significantly improved. Our team speed improved as did team strength and with added arms on the bump we look to take a big step forward as a program.” – Granville Gehris, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
First Flight is coming off a 13–10 season in 2025 that functioned as a rebuilding year, but the Nighthawks appear positioned to take a step forward despite graduating their ace, All-State Aaron Stewart. The roster now leans younger, with development and growth driving the outlook.

The return of Fionn Reilly (1B/RHP, 2026) and Dillon Francis (C/INF, 2026) provides a foundation of versatility and leadership. A talented underclass group — Brody Stephens (C, 2027), Cade Gehris (CF, 2027), and Ben LaVier (LHP/OF, 2028) — adds athleticism, with LaVier showing the potential to grow into a key arm for the staff.

With speed, defense, and pitching depth as strengths, First Flight’s youth and inexperience will be tested early. As the season progresses, the blend of returning contributors and athletic underclassmen points toward continued improvement and a promising 2026 outlook.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Team Strengths:
Pitching depth should be a strength so long as we remain healthy.

Top Seniors:
JT Williams, Pitcher and First base, 2026,
Drew Lysaght, Pitcher and Shortstop, 2026
Landon Simpson, Pitcher and Utility, 2026
Taylor Ashley, Catcher and Infield, 2026

Top Juniors:
Adam Donofrio, Catcher Pitcher and Outfield, 2027
Kaden Knight, Third base, 2027

“We have established ourselves well in the NCISAA 3A level. Prior to breaking through to the semifinals last season, we had reached the quarterfinal round for four straight seasons. We hope to continue to build upon that success. ” – Matt Mason, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
John Paul II Catholic is coming off a historic 16–10 season that included a state semifinal appearance and a CPIC co-championship, setting a high standard entering the spring. The Saints will need to replace significant production after graduating their top three hitters and top pitcher, but the foundation remains strong.

The return of a talented 2026 core drives optimism, led by JT Williams (P/1B, High Point commit) and Drew Lysaght (P/SS), both of whom impact the game on both sides of the ball. Landon Simpson (2026 transfer) adds another high-upside piece to the roster. With notable pitching depth, John Paul II is built to stay competitive as younger players step into expanded roles.

IMPACT UNDERCLASSMEN

Hayden Flowers

SEASON OUTLOOK

Team Strengths: A year of learning that could have some big rewards if the right players continue to develop.

“We are a Young group, but our Junior class has played a lot of HS baseball. Once we find our true leader we will go as far as they take us. We are experienced on the mound which is probably our best group overall. We will have to play solid defense to be successful this year.” – Zach Alexander, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Manteo is coming off a 15–7 season and a first-round playoff exit in 2025, but the Redskins enter the spring with optimism despite graduating seven seniors. The roster skews young, yet the foundation on the mound provides stability.

A talented junior class leads the way, highlighted by Drew Brown (LHP/CF, 2027), Trevor Sawyer (RHP/1B, 2027), and Tanner Sawyer (SS, 2027). While Manteo lost much of its senior class, the pitching staff returns all but 25 innings from last year, giving the team valuable experience and continuity. Underclassmen Hayden Flowers (RHP, 2028) and Trevor Dobson (SO) add depth and upside.

With pitching experience and junior leadership as strengths, Manteo’s youth and limited senior presence will be tested. If the defense holds steady behind an experienced mound crew, the Redskins have the tools to remain competitive as they continue to build toward 2026.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Team Strengths:
A versatile group of players. Guys that can move around in the field and in the lineup. This will allow the team to put out a strong lineup each night no matter who is pitching and how they have to arrange our defense.

Top Seniors:
Bryce Manning, 2026, OF/RHP
RJ Williams, 2026, OF

Top Juniors: Montreal Ham, 2027, LHP

“We will be young but talented. This group works hard and is very versatile. We have strong team chemistry which will help us get better and better as the season progresses.” – Mark Snead, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Roanoke Rapids HS enters 2026 in a rebuilding phase after a 10–11 season that included a conference finals appearance and a first-round playoff exit. The Jackets return a promising young core led by Bryce Manning (OF/RHP, 2026), RJ Williams (OF, 2026), and Ryan White (C, 2026)—all of whom hit over .300 last season. Versatility and strong team chemistry highlight the group, but limited varsity experience and an unproven pitching staff remain key challenges after graduating standout Collin Elias. While wins may be inconsistent early, expect steady growth from a young but talented roster as the season progresses.

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Rocky Mount HS finished 7–13 in 2025 but showed signs of momentum with a late-season playoff push. The Gryphons return a mix of experience and upside, led by Jack McKellar (C, 2026; VMI commit), a key presence behind the plate. The future is bright with underclassmen Jason Battle (MIF, 2028) and Reed Stinson (CIF/COF, 2028) already making an impact as sophomores. Top Juniors:

“We have a lot of upside potential. We lost the majority of our starting pitching, but the replacements are very talented. Once we are able to figure out where the pieces should be, we have a chance to be very dangerous.” – Pat McRae, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
South Central HS (Falcons) is coming off a strong 16–8 season in the Big Carolina Conference, though postseason hopes were cut short by key injuries. Despite graduating significant production—including 108 of 160 innings pitched—the Falcons return a high-upside core led by Isaiah James (LHP/OF, 2026; Duke commit), a front-line Tuesday starter and consistent pro scout draw. James is a big-time, electric arm with the ability to overpower hitters, though improving strike efficiency and limiting walks will be a key factor in his next step. Tyce Thompson (C, 2027) returns healthy to anchor the defense and has a chance to be a true “grown-man” offensive presence in the middle of the lineup. Underclassmen Colby Jones (IF, 2027), Justin Blow (RHP/UTL, 2027), and Aiden Parker (SS, 2027) provide athleticism, defensive stability, and emerging power. With defensive soundness and pitching depth as strengths, the main challenge will be managing a deep, talented roster. If chemistry clicks, South Central has the upside to be a dangerous postseason threat in 2026.

“I am excited about this upcoming season. With the amount of returns we have coming back, if we jump back on track where we left off last season things could get interesting throughout the year.” – Ricky Battle, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Southern Nash HS (Firebirds) is coming off a 14–13 season highlighted by the program’s first second-round home playoff game since 1996, signaling continued upward momentum in the Big East 5A/6A. With only two seniors lost, the Firebirds return an experienced, athletic core led by Kwamaine Isaiah Battle (3B/MIF/RHP, 2007), who paced the offense with a .376 average, and Grayden Murray (RHP/OF), a mid-to-high 80s arm who served as the team’s top starter with a 2.29 ERA. Offensively, Maddox Deans (C) brings on-base consistency (OBP .476), while Luke Faulkner (RHP/OF, 2026) and Jeremiah Battle (OF/RHP) add speed and table-setting ability. Brayden Parker (SS, 2026) anchors the infield and provides senior leadership. Experience, speed, and pitching depth headline the strengths, while limited roster depth remains the primary concern. With a veteran group returning, Southern Nash enters 2026 positioned to build on last season’s historic postseason run.

“The 2026 Hunt Warriors looks to compete for a conference championship and make a run in the 5A playoffs. Keys to their success will be the starting pitching, health, and defense. The bats will need to produce more runs than the 2025 Warriors in order to reach their goals, but we expect to be one of the top teams in the East for 5A. ” – Jon Smith, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
James B. Hunt Jr. HS (Warriors) is coming off a strong 17–9 campaign that included a second-round playoff appearance and a share of the Big East 5A/6A conference title. Hunt returns one of the deepest and most talented cores in the region, headlined by Will Doll (CF, 2026), an All-State performer and Conference Player of the Year candidate, along with Trevor Moore (RHP/RF, 2026), an All-State arm and Conference Pitcher of the Year candidate. The underclass talent is equally impressive, led by Stone Massey (RHP/1B, 2027; NC State commit), who shows advanced pitchability with present velocity and projects as a high-impact arm, and Zach Taylor (SS, 2028), already an All-State and Conference Player of the Year candidate. With starting pitching, baserunning, and lineup depth as clear strengths, the primary focus will be finding more consistent run production. If pitching, defense, and health hold, the Warriors are not only a strong conference championship contender, but a team with the upside to challenge for a state championship in 2026.

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Ashley HS (Screaming Eagles) is coming off a dominant 22–5 season that included a third-round playoff run and national recognition, reaching No. 1 in North Carolina and No. 18 nationally at one point. The Eagles face a major transition after graduating 12 seniors and returning just 12 of 187 innings on the mound, making this one of the youngest versions of the program in recent years. The next wave is led by Jahmeer Damon (P/IF, 2028), a high-upside underclass arm, and Elijah Setzer (P/1B, 2026), a versatile two-way presence. Positional flexibility remains a strength, but limited varsity experience and unproven depth will be early-season question marks. Still, after a combined 48–11 record over the past two seasons, Ashley enters 2026 focused on reloading while navigating what may be the toughest conference in the state, with the long-term goal of remaining in the title hunt.

Speed, Leadership & Pitching

“We're excited to build off of last years success & continue to establish ourselves as one of the top programs in the East. Our goal remains the same for 2026...we want to host a regional in Beaufort and hang a state championship banner.” – Josh VanMeter, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
East Carteret HS (Mariners) is coming off a historic 26–1 season that included a 24–0 undefeated regular season—the first in county history—and a third-round playoff appearance in the Coastal Plains 1A/2A. With only one senior lost, the Mariners return an experienced, battle-tested roster led by Eli Jenkins (CF, 2026; Wingate commit) and Jonathan Piner (C, 2026; Warner University commit), providing leadership up the middle. Offensively, this group can light up the scoreboard, scoring nearly 250 runs with close to 70 extra-base hits a year ago. The pitching staff was equally dominant, surrendering just 35 runs all season, led by Bryan Hadder (RHP, 2026) and emerging underclass arm Tanner Wade (RHP, 2028), with Chase Roberson (SS, 2026) anchoring the infield. With speed, leadership, and elite run prevention, East Carteret enters 2026 expecting to continue its dominance in the East, with sights set on hosting a regional and making a legitimate run at a state championship.

“We were a young team that learned a lot by competing against one of the toughest schedules last season and that experience has accelerated our growth. Our players are extremely hardworking and committed to getting better every day. If we continue to gel and play for one common goal, we believe we have a chance to be very successful this season.” – Christopher Sotriffer, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
South Brunswick HS (Cougars) enters 2026 with a battle-tested, youthful roster after navigating a demanding 2025 season as the smallest school in the Mid-Eastern Conference. The Cougars finished 10–16 but pushed to the third round of the playoffs, losing a one-run game to Rose, a result that undersells how competitive this group became. The pitching staff was led by freshman Liam Edmonds, whose poise and maturity stood out early and could be a separator as his role expands. The returning core is anchored by versatile athletes Grady Sotriffer (MIF/RHP, 2026) and Jayden Daniels (1B/RHP, 2026), with upside depth from Harrison Mears (MIF/C/RHP, 2027), Sid Dale (OF/LHP, 2027), and Wyatt Clewis (OF/RHP, 2028).

Run prevention and competitiveness define the profile, though some arms remain unproven in larger roles. A move into the Southeastern Conference should immediately ease the weekly grind, allowing this experienced group to play faster and more freely. South Brunswick plays with tempo, defends, throws strikes, and competes pitch-to-pitch, making them a strong breakout candidate in 2026.

“We have a great group of guys this season. It will be battle to win a position because we have depth. If things click we could have another successful season. ” – Paul Novicki, head coach

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
South Lenoir HS (Blue Devils) is coming off a memorable 23–6 season that ended with an East Regional title and a State Runner-Up finish, but 2026 brings a reset after heavy graduation losses. The Blue Devils must replace a significant portion of their production, including 130 of 180 innings on the mound and much of their offensive firepower following the departures of Jake Howard and Matthew Rhodes. The returning group is anchored by Braden Barnett (P/U), whose versatility will be important in stabilizing multiple areas, along with Gage Howard (SS) and Noah Rouse (CF), both of whom provide defensive reliability and experience.

Pitching depth and overall experience give the staff a workable foundation, but roles—particularly on the mound—remain unsettled early. Offensively, this group is more reliant on execution, speed, and situational hitting than power. Internal competition should help clarify the lineup and rotation as the season develops, and while repeating last year’s postseason run will be difficult, South Lenoir has enough returning structure to remain competitive in the East Central with upside for another solid year.

Prep Baseball NC Scout Notes:
Wilmington Christian Academy (Patriots) continues to punch above its weight as a small-school program with a championship pedigree, coming off back-to-back state titles (2023, 2024). After a bold 2025 schedule that tested a young roster against high-level public and private competition, WCA re-enters NCCSA play with a group that is deeper, more athletic, and more versatile than recent versions. Speed and athleticism are present throughout the lineup, and the Patriots remain a fundamentally sound, well-coached group that competes with pace and purpose.

The primary limitation remains the absence of a true power arm on the mound, placing added emphasis on execution, pitchability, and defense. Continued adjustment to the physicality and depth of top-tier public school competition will be an ongoing evaluation point. Still, with improved depth, team speed, and a proven winning identity, WCA enters the season as a dangerous opponent capable of extending its postseason relevance while continuing to test itself beyond its enrollment size.
