Prep Baseball Report

Quick Hits: Preseason Central Utah ID

Taylor Berg
Utah Scouting Director

The Preseason Central Utah ID took place on Saturday, January 31 @ The Hive in Nephi. This event featured a collection of promising prospects from Utah's 2026–2029 graduating classes, each aiming to display the progress they have made over the course of the busy Fall and Winter offseason schedule.

The ID allowed our staff to evaluate prospects before the Spring season and served as an identifier for future invite-only events such as the Preseason All-State, Top Prospect Games, Future Games, and more.

Each participant received a full Prep Baseball profile update, including headshot, video, showcase statistics, and advanced data analysis. With profile access by more than 1000 college programs across the country, the event provided valuable exposure for players while offering an in-depth evaluation heading into the offseason.

*PLAYERS LISTED IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER*

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

Ty Holmstead OF / RHP / American Fork, UT / 2028

The #3 player in our 2028 Class put on an impressive display yesterday at the 1st of 3 Preseason events of the year. After posting top metrics in the 60 and BP, he took the mound and showcased an elite FB with a quality pitch mix that filled up the zone. The improvement in the SL/CH combo are noticably better since the Spring and show signs of producing plenty of swing and miss. At 6’3 180 lbs, the physicality and skill set are in line with top level national recruits, expect a big year ahead for the standout Sophomore.

Jake Welch SS / 2B / Lehi, UT / 2028

Jake continues to display elite level tools and is making a strong case to push up the National rankings sooner rather than later. The Sophomore SS exploded onto the scene this Summer and has put in the work this offseason, which displayed itself again today. He checks all the boxes physically to be a Power 5 middle infielder: 5’11 165 lbs/6.8 runner/91 inf velo/104+ EV/excellent bat to ball and glove skills with feet to match. Jake is an absolute must follow this year and we expect to have a breakout season for the Pioneers.

Brooks Pratt C / SS / Maple Mountain, UT / 2028

There is a clear upside with Brooks that remains apparent each time we see him. The frame continues to mature and fill out with physicality that really stands out now when you see him in person. He put on 15 pounds since we saw him last November, which showcased itself in the BP rounds. From the left side he keeps the swing simple and flat into the zone with strong extension through contact. Keep Brooks on your must follow list as his best ball is ahead of him.

Reggie Ence OF / RHP / Snow Canyon, UT / 2028

We got our first look at Reggie since 2024 and his growth and production increases are substantial. The now Sophomore OF put together a strong workout throughout the day, including one of the top 60 times (6.84) and EV (96.4). At 6’ 175 lbs there is present physical upside with a frame that has more room for added growth down the road. The offensive production is the standout tool right now, and moving forward we will have Reggie on our must follow list for the 2028 Class.

Cash Ence OF / 1B / Snow Canyon, UT / 2027

Cash is a great example of what our ID events are designed to do; identify talent. The Central UT ID was his first PBR event and he had a strong performance overall. The 6’1 195 lb Junior flashed serious physical upside, especially in the BP portion of the workout. We could tell that he didn’t have his best round, but you can clearly see the power projection moving forward. Strong athlete that we anticipate having a productive year.

Gianni Giammalva 2B / SS / Hurricane, UT / 2027

The Junior OF out of Hurricane, UT, has clearly been working on his game throughout this offseason. He posted personal bests in multiple categories, most notably in the 60 where his performance landed him in the top 3 for the entire event at a 6.87, drastically lowering his time since his last showcase at our Summer Top Prospects Games. The bat to ball skills play well and the physicality continues to trend upward heading into Spring. A sound defender and overall productive player that we expect to be a leader for his HS in 2026.

Ethan Pepper C / SS / Spanish Fork, UT / 2029

Ethan continues to impress with his overall skillset each chance we get to see him. He posted personal bests in nearly every category, most notably dropping his 60 times over half a second since September, and increasing his EV 5+mph as well. The catch and throw tool is very ahead for the class, consistently posting sub 2.0 pop times and his best at 1.94 with 75 velo. Offensively you can see the intent to do damage, along with a repeatable aggressive load style with solid rhythm. Ethan will continue to be a an absolute must follow moving forward.

Boston Fenn 1B / RHP / American Leadership Academy, UT / 2029

The Freshman out of ALA continues to impress and show improvement each chance he gets. He posted Top 5 metrics in the 60 (7.0) and BP (97.2) for the entire event, regardless of Class. The athletic 6’ frame and broad shoulders have plenty of room for added growth in the years to come, which will only continue to add to the overall upside. On the mound the FB gets up to 78 and looks to be an arm that stands to increase velo in the near future. Very intriguing day for Boston and should get Varsity time this Spring.

Ty Wilson SS / OF / American Fork, UT / 2028

Ty made a strong first impression at this event which was also his first with PBR. Immediately you notice the physicality and frame, standing at 6’ 190 lbs and visibly strong. He started his day running a 7.11 in the 60, followed that with 82 across the infield and finished with a strong BP round getting up to 97.4, while averaging 87+ throughout. After a very intriguing day for the Sophomore MIF, Ty has earned a spot on our must follow list heading into Spring.

Ethan Christensen RHP / 1B / Mountain Crest, UT / 2027

Ethan had arguably the biggest breakout performance of the day, going from completely unknown to firmly placing himself on our must follow list. The right-hander out of Logan dominated his bullpen, flashing serious upside and a firm FB up to 88.5, with the effective velo at 90.8. He pounded the zone with 3 quality pitches, including a SL/CH combo that both show signs of being elite. At 6’3 215 lbs, Ethan is an exciting pitching prospect and should have a productive Spring for Mountain Crest.
